Michigan Reads! 2015 Author Tour and Book Announcement

The 2015 Michigan Reads! One State, One Children's Book program is getting started! We are proud to announce that the 2015 Michigan Reads! book will be Do Unto Otters written and illustrated by Laurie Keller. We are looking for libraries to host the author and illustrator in September and October. Please find the link to the author tour survey below. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MIReads2015tour - responses due by May 1st In the book, Mr. Rabbit's new neighbors are otters. OTTERS! But he doesn't know anything about otters. Will they be friends? Will they even get along? Follow Mr. Rabbit as he learns how to be a good friend and neighbor by simply following the Golden Rule. You can find Do Unto Otters in BookFlix in the MeL Kids section - http://kids.mel.org/. The publisher is Macmillan, and we are pleased to have them partnering with us on program materials. As in previous years, we will be sending a programming guide and kit to all public library locations, K-2 school buildings, Great Start Readiness and Head Start classrooms in late August and early September. Our official launch day will be announced this summer. In the next few months, look for a completely revamped Michigan Reads! site with the new programming guide and other materials at www.michigan.gov/michiganreads<http://www.michigan.gov/michiganreads>. For now, you can find the tour request survey link at the site and brief information on the new book. If you would like to be considered for an author visit, please let us hear back from you by May 1st so we can plan the program for the fall. Researching Underground Railroads at the Library of Michigan Saturday, April 11th, 10 - 1:30 10 - 10:50, Lansing based researcher, Jesse Lasorda, "Underground Railroad Leads" Local area researcher, Jesse Lasorda will discuss lesser known Lansing area locations of potential interest to those studying the Underground Railroad in Michigan 11 - 11:50, Underground Railroad researcher and author, Carol Mull, "UGRR in MI from Slavery to Freedom" Carol Mull is the author of the book, The Underground Railroad in Michigan and has spent her career researching, documenting and teaching the topic in the state of Michigan. In this session, Carol will explain the key variables that made Michigan a hotbed for abolitionist and those escaping captivity. 12 - 12:50, "Researching the Underground Railroad", Carol Mull Underground means difficult and in this session Carol will go over the key resources, why they are important and where they may be obtained. 1 - 1:30, "Beginning Your Research in the Library of Michigan", Edwina Murphy Edwina Murphy is the Michigan Collection Curator at the Library of Michigan. All new research begins with a lead and in this session participants will learn about the resources available in the Library of Michigan. Library staff will be available after the session to guide attendees to the local history sources. The Oakland County Research Library is seeking a library and information science student or recent graduate to assist with the digitization and indexing of its historic county government documents collection. The collection will be made available to the public through the Oakland County Historical Resources Consortium's website. The goals of this project are to: . Make Oakland County's government documents collection more accessible to the public for research purposes . Promote greater governmental transparency . Preserve the historic government documents collection Duties: . Prepare materials for scanning . Scan materials into digital formats . Upload scanned files into the digital repository used by the consortium . Record descriptive, technical, and structural metadata in the Archival Ware database accurately and with a high attention to detail . Submit files for quality control review and makes changes as directed Qualifications: . Bachelor's degree . High level of computer literacy . Willingness to learn new software and technologies . Working knowledge of digitization projects and scanning equipment preferred . Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat desired . Ability to consistently meet deadlines as assigned . High attention to detail and accuracy . Ability to work independently with minimal direction and as part of a supervised team . Extending Due Dates

Dear Colleagues, I wondered if everyone used the Special Due Date function in WorkFlows, that allows staff to create a custom due date, liberally.....except for new items or items that are not yours. We have many patrons that travel and ask for extended due dates to avoid fines. I'm inclined to approve it for books and audiobooks, but not for DVDs. MAP: Can You Say Ferry To Mackinac Island???!!! Or Ferry to Lighthouses!!!??? MAP Will Really Float Your Patron's Boat, Beginning May 24

All, TLN was closed for the Good Friday holiday, so when going through this morning's three day accumulation of email I was VERY pleased to see such a huge number of "yes, of course we are renewing MAP for 2015-2016" messages in my inbox from our current MAP cultural partners. This includes destinations such as Michigan Science Center, Detroit Institute of Arts, Holocaust Memorial Center, Southern Michigan Railroad, Sloan Museum, Meadow Brook Hall, Upper Peninsula Children's Museum, and so many others. As we have built close relationships with our renewing cultural partners, so too have we continued to reach out to potential new venues, pointing out to them the benefits that will come their way courtesy of a new relationship with Michigan's 5,043,700 registered public library patrons via the MAP program. To that end I am extremely pleased to present to you and your patrons our newest MAP partner, which is the subject of this message. Yes, Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry has joined the Michigan Activity Pass program! Is that cool or what?!
