[cid:image001.jpg@01D05A64.A4A3C4D0] Michigan Library Cooperative Directors Association Statement on School Libraries and Librarians The Michigan Cooperative Directors Association fully endorses the Michigan Department of Education and the Library of Michigan’s support for school library media centers. School media centers are an integral part of the K-12 education for the students in Michigan and provide a thirteen year foundation in teaching and learning. In addition, the MCDA supports the employment of fully certified school librarians/media specialists in every public and private school in the state. Studies show that schools who have librarians working with teachers on curriculum needs and students who receive instruction in library research are not only higher achievers, but are also prepared for higher education and career pursuits. Information and digital literacy skill development are the foundation of excellent school library programs and are vitally important to successfully meeting Michigan’s Common Core Standards. Each student should be able to experience a school media center environment where research and exploration are enhanced by a dedicated school media specialist. Furthermore, the MCDA supports the belief that the ‘birth to elder’ continuum includes all types of libraries – school, public, academic, and special - in order to develop and maintain a fully informed community of individuals in our state. Cooperatives recognize that each type of library contributes to educational excellence in Michigan. School libraries and librarians are equal partners in that equation. Enhancements to select Gale databases effective April 2

Hello all, This is a follow-up to a previous message about changes coming to some Gale databases - InfoTrac products, In Context products, and Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL). Prior to April 2, please take a few minutes to follow the link in the upper left corner of each affected database to "Try New Experience" and see the changes firsthand. For further details see: http://solutions.cengage.com/enhancements2015/features/iba=15E-GL0276/ Here is a brief summary of some changes: * All 3 now employ responsive design and should scale to even smart phone size * Menus previously on the left are now on the right * New Interface colors are black/dark grey, white, and an orange (which is considered one of the most "pop able" colors for online design) * The listen feature has been moved on GVRL to make it more visible and used * The list of "Tools" has been reordered to reflect usage from most frequently "Citation Tools" to least "Share" * Design changes are an attempt to establish commonality among the 3 products * The interlinking feature between GVRL and Academic OneFile has been preserved * No functionality has been removed, just relocated in some cases Eunice Eunice C. Thanks to funding from the U-M Third Century Initiative and the UMSI Founders Fund, Michigan Makers is hosting two *free *Making Maker Learners conferences for those who work with K-8 students in formal or informal settings. Join us for a conversation about how we can harness learners' curiosity and help them program, tinker, construct, engineer, sew, and make their own creations. There will be time for discussion, hands-on experimentation, and even giveaways. Those who work with K-8 students in *informal learning settings* (e.g., libraries, community centers, and after school programs) should register for the Saturday,March 28 session. Those who work with K-8 students in f*ormal classroom settings* should register for the Saturday sessions on April 18 and 25, because they include a focus on assessment of maker learning.
