FREE Leather strips

Tandy Leather donated some leather strips to us a few years ago. We have used some for wrist bands and bookmarks, but have a surplus supply that we'd like to offer to anyone who can use them. Two boxes contain strips about 8" X 1" (about 100 ct. each) and one box contains thin longer strips with holes punched for child-sized belts. All can be decorated with permanent markers or fabric paint. A leather hole-punch tool may be necessary. Please contact me if interested and specify which box/boxes you would like. Last chance to attend upcoming Michigan library community conversations

We have some last minute openings available in our round of Michigan library community conversations – register today! We need input from libraries of all types, sizes and geographic areas to make this effort an authentic representation of Michigan libraries. Please consider joining us and sharing your thoughts, challenges and hopes for the greater Michigan library community. You do not have to be an expert. We want you to speak openly and candidly from your experience and point of view. The dates, times and locations are listed below. All library staff are welcome. To have a meaningful conversation, we will limit the number of attendees at each session to 12. Because of this, we request that you consider limiting the number of attendees from your library system. Registration is free and on a “first come, first served” basis. A waiting list will be kept. As in our first round, the meetings will be kept to 2 hours and will be held across the state. Banned Books Week - Highlighting Michigan libraries' activities on LM homepage

Greetings, Banned Books Week is Sept 21-27, an annual celebration of the freedom to read. The Library of Michigan would like to showcase your library's activities during this week on our homepage. 2015 Carnegie Whitney Award Submissions

Carnegie-Whitney Awards up to $5,000 The American Library Association Publishing Committee provides a grant of up to $5,000 for the preparation of print or electronic reading lists, indexes or other guides to library resources that promote reading or the use of library resources at any type of library. Funded projects have ranged from popular, general-reader proposals such as "ReadMOre," a reading list for Missouri's state-wide reading program, to more specialized, scholarly proposals such as "Librarianship and Information Science in the Islamic World, 1966-1999: An Annotated Bibliography." Applications must be received by November 7, 2014. Recipients will be notified by the end of February 2015. Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Fall 2014 Grants

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. The Metro Detroit Book & Author Society is pleased to announce that the following two (2) grants are available: the Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award, and the Dick Johnston Award. Information about these grants is below. The grants will be presented at the Fall 2014 Book & Author Luncheon on Monday, October 20, 2014, at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive a free ticket to the Fall 2014 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are required to submit a 22'' x 28" project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Spring 2015 luncheon. Grant application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Completed applications should be sent by either email or U.S. mail to the address listed on the application forms. For more information, please see the grant application forms or the society's website: www.bookandauthor.info Grants to be awarded: 1. The Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a Friends of the Library group in the metro-Detroit area to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library's patrons and community. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that "good libraries need good Friends." 2. The Dick Johnston Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metro-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. The award was established to honor the late Dick Johnston, who was a member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board and served as its President in 1980 and 1981. Mr. Johnston was also President of the Michigan Library Association and Director of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Township Libraries.
