Please read below and contact your rep today. E-rate funding is important to many types of libraries in Michigan and this amendment could be harmful. From: Emily Sheketoff [mailto:esheketoff@alawash.org] Sent: Monday, July 14, 2014 6:01 PM To: alacro-l(a)ala.org Subject: [alacro-l] Libraries Need Your Help Please call your U.S. Representative today and encourage him or her not to support any amendment that would thwart the FCC's ability to increase funds to the Federal E-rate program. Rumors are circulating around Capitol Hill this week of a possible amendment to the House Financial Services Appropriations bill that would limit the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) ability to increase funds to the Federal E-rate program. We expect this amendment to be voted on the House floor sometime within the next 48 to 72 hours. If such an amendment were to pass and become law, it would be very damaging to the E-rate program. The E-rate program is part of the Universal Service Fund, which is overseen by the FCC. Through this program, libraries and schools receive discounts on telecommunications services including high capacity broadband. Many libraries count on these funds to provide internet services to their users.

She received her Ph.D. in 2008 from Yale University, where she won the Edwin Small Prize for an outstanding dissertation in American history. Her first book, Modern Food, Moral Food: Self-Control, Science, and the Rise of Modern American Eating in the Early Twentieth Century (University of North Carolina Press, Fall 2013) explores food and nutrition in the Progressive Era. Modern Food, Moral Food was a finalist for the James Beard prize in Reference and Scholarship. She is the editor of the American Food in History book series with Michigan State University Press. The first book in the series, Food in the Civil War Era: The North, was released in May 2014. Her next book, Small Appetites: A History of Children's Food, examines the history of children's eating during the last two hundred years. She is also director of the What America Ate project, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Launched in spring 2014, What America Ate is a three-year project to create a digital archive and interactive website on food in the Great Depression.

FAQs regarding MLA & Academic Libraries

Good morning, During the last month there have been many questions and assertions regarding Michigan Library Association, academic libraries, and the new Michigan Academic Library Association (MI-ALA). The MLA Board has spent a great deal of time since the surprise of the original MI-ALA announcement reviewing the statement of concerns and addressing how best to respond. We recognize that the MI-ALA statement of concerns highlights opportunities to improve the association and make it stronger for all of our members not just those from academic libraries. Although we don't agree with all of the statements or anticipated actions, we appreciate that everyone from MLA and MI-ALA is trying to do their best to support libraries. As we move forward, we will need your input and we will need to have an ongoing dialog with the MI-ALA leadership. At our next MLA Board meeting, scheduled for September 12, we anticipate a proposal to create a task force to examine ways to strengthen member engagement opportunities.
