Re Subscription services: In an rfp/competitive bid environment a Popular quote will most always come in lower than an EBSCO quote. This partially on account EBSCO handles more titles than Popular does. A smaller library that buys relatively few and only the most common titles probably would realize a savings by utilizing Popular. A library the size of GDL might end up seeing said savings being eaten up, and then some, in staff time by having to direct order titles that Popular doesn't handle. EBSCO is EBSCO; they are the biggest and, in my 26+ years of experience, usually the most expensive. Wolper does offer outstanding customer service. They helped us make a very smooth transition following the Faxon implosion debacle of a number of years ago. Another vendor to consider is WT Cox. TLN just negotiated a statewide discount with WT Cox. This WT Cox statewide discount offer is good through December 31, 2014. This position provides administration, support and enhancement of a variety of library technology systems, including the libraries integrated management system and the discovery platform. The selected candidate will collaborate with vendors and staff to perform detailed planning, installation, and implementation for new software releases. This includes design planning, security, data structures, backup, and application program integration. The position will also be responsible for development of relevant training and documentation of processes for library staff. In addition to staying current in emerging professional trends relating to library automation, systems, and discovery, this position will have the opportunity to play a key role in planning and coordinating future technology implementation projects Required qualifications: M.L.I.S. degree or equivalent from ALA-accredited library school. Minimum of two years' recent experience working in a library position requiring an educational minimum of a bachelor's degree. Registration is now open. This training event is intended for public library staff with 3 years or less experience with E-rate. The training will be presented by Linda Schatz, President, EdTech Strategies, LLC and the ALA, Office for Information Technology Policy’s expert e-rate consultant. Participation is limited to staff from Michigan libraries. The class will cover the basics of E-rate for those with little familiarity with the program and for those who need a refresher on the process. For the past four years, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplant, and to give them an opportunity to join the MichiganOrgan Donor Registry. People die waiting because not enough organs are available. In September 2012, the Michigan State Parks and Outdoor Recreation Blue Ribbon Panel submitted a report to Governor Rick Snyder that included heritage resources in its vision for a vibrant system of parks, trails and recreation throughout our state. The first paragraph reads: "Michigan's natural resources are the foundation of a world-class parks and outdoor recreation system. The state's abundant, high-quality, and-in many instances-globally unique natural, cultural, historic and prehistoric resources include the Great Lakes and beaches, inland lakes and streams, grass lands, forests, and historic and cultural sites (such as battlefields, lighthouses, ancient burial grounds and birthplaces of notable Michigan residents). These must be protected and enhanced to grow Michigan's economy and improve the well-being of our residents and visitors." Last year, an ad hoc group of regional and statewide heritage organization leaders was convened by the Michigan Historical Commission, the Historical Society of Michigan and the Michigan Historical Center, calling itself the Michigan Heritage Leadership Council. It began meeting to discuss ways our sector can contribute to the vision set out by this report. One avenue is to increase the incorporation of cultural heritage resources into trails and parks. A first step toward achieving this goal is to get a better handle on what is already going on across the state. This is where you come in. privacy and notifications

So....we have our Michigan Library Privacy Act which prevents us from sharing patron record information with those other than the actual patron. Then, we offer notifications via phone, email, or text. What do you do when you know the patron isn't the one with the email address or text number? For example, a child who is two years old cannot read email or a text. (We don't require parental signature with kids cards...just that the parent is with the child when signing them up, so we don't have that element of implied or extended authorization).
