Southfield Public Library The Southfield Public Library’s internship program offers paid, practical library experience for students currently enrolled in a School of Information/Library Science Master’s program. Students are responsible for providing evidence of enrollment and satisfactory progress toward completion of their degree. These internships are available in four departments: Youth Services, Adult Services, Outreach Services and Technology. The required qualifications and duties for each internship are listed below. In your cover letter, please specify the internship/s for which you are applying. Library Intern – YOUTH SERVICES Qualifications: · Bachelor’s Degree · Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Information and Library Science · Coursework in youth services is desired Duties: · Assistance with and promotion of Library programs and services · Providing reference and reader’s advisory service · Collection development · Special projects as assigned Library Intern – ADULT SERVICES Qualifications: · Bachelor’s Degree · Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Information and Library Science at the time of hire Duties: · Direct service to patrons at the reference and fiction desk · Collection development and book displays · Income tax forms – distribution and programs · Sort and route divisional mail, reports and etc. · Update manuals · Order supplies · Compile statistics · Assist librarians with programming · Serve on library and divisional committees · Other duties as required Library Intern – COMMUNITY OUTREACH Qualifications: · Bachelor’s Degree · Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Information and Library Science at the time of hire · Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop) is desired Duties: · Developing and implementing Library programs · Assisting with Library promotion and marketing · Designing flyers and promotions for the library · Working with social media · Providing reference and reader's advisory service at the Adult and Youth public service desks Library Intern – TECHNOLOGY Qualifications: · Bachelor’s Degree · Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Information and Library Science · Knowledge of HTML and CSS · In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office software · Experience in technical support is desired Duties: · Updating, Editing and Creating content for the Library’s web site and the Library’s informational screen displays · Assisting in the operation of the Library’s public computer time-management system · Providing direct service to patrons on the phone and in person · Support of library events requiring audio visual equipment · Teaching Technology classes and developing new classes · Maintaining public copiers and managing vending / change machine cash · Special projects as assigned For all positions: Salary and Benefits · $11.00/hour/first year · $12.00/hour/second year · Tuition reimbursement allowance · Vacation leave, sick leave, personal business leave and paid holidays · Incentive bonus upon completion of the two year program · Health insurance Hours: · 30 hours/week including evenings and weekend hours for the Adult Services, Community Outreach and Youth Services positions · 40 hours/week including evenings and weekend hours for the Technology position · This is a two year position Deadline: Friday, May 9th Application: Please send a cover letter and resume to: Mary Beall, Assistant City Librarian Southfield Public Library 26300 Evergreen Road Southfield, MI 48076 mbeall(a)sfldlib.org

***Please forgive the cross-posting*** This is your invitation to participate in an online survey regarding Impostor Phenomenon among mid-level managers and administrators in academic libraries. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1F_Z9vAbeeFPz5XIgBdHZONjizYW4GQ5Z2utTk_knAK… Imposter Phenomenon (IP), also known as Imposter Syndrome, has been a popular topic in higher education for over 30 years. The idea comes from two psychologists, Dr. Pauline Rose Clance and Dr. Suzanne Ament Imes, both of whom noticed reoccurring anxieties among successful women/men in managerial roles. The idea behind IP is that no matter how hard one works, or how successful one becomes, the individual feels like a fraud. At any moment they will be “found out” by supervisors that they are not as “good”, “intelligent”, or “successful” as they appear to be. They feel as if their success was by chance or by luck and not from their own abilities. There is no known or expected risk, threat, or harm to either potential project participants or project participants or others. The short survey should take approximately 15-25 minutes to complete. A portion of this survey contains the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale (CIPS) with permission of the author (see permission statement below). No data is saved until the participant submits the full survey. You are asked to voluntarily provide specific information to this web site. You may skip any question, or stop participating at any time. The information collected will be used for the stated purposes of this research project only and will not be provided to any other party for any other reason at any time except and only if required by law. You should be aware that although the information you provide is anonymous, it is transmitted in a non-secure manner. There is a remote chance that skilled, knowledgeable persons unaffiliated with this research project could track the information you provide to the IP address of the computer from which you send it. One of the workshop sessions "Tools for Virtual Management" will cover various tools that can be used to improve communication and efficiency amongst a distributed team. Great speaker on the environment

We had a wonderful speaker at the Northville District Library last night, in case any other libraries would like to contact him. Our audience loved his presentation (adult audience, altho he also presents to students) and are clamoring for more of the same. His name is Jerry Hasspacher, and is a retired teacher. He is with the Southeast Michigan Group of the Sierra Club. His program was titled "Let's Go Green" and he covered all sort of topics: climate change, fracking, greenhouse effect, rain gardens, hybrid cars, invasive species in Michigan, bicycling, and tips for individual action.
