Baldwin's building bond proposal fails

On May 6, the Baldwin Public Library's building bond proposal went down by a decisive margin--76% to 24% (3,775 to 1,167). 29% of the voters went to the polls, which is high for a special election. This does not affect Baldwin's operating millage, so the Library will continue to operate without any changes in hours or services. This was a curious election. There was a strong organized local opposition, but then the measure leaped onto the regional and national stage. The Detroit News urged Birmingham to turn down the measure, and there were "vote no" mailings from a group called The Free Congress Action, located in Virginia, as well as robocalls out of Idaho. Even NPR did a segment on the vote. I believe we had a strong building plan developed by Quinn Evans Associates, but the voters ultimately decided that the investment was not worth the cost. Project Increasing Diversity of Libraries (IDOL) Now Accepting Applications!

The School of Library and Information Science is accepting applications for its Project Increasing Diversity of Librarians (IDOL) Fall 2014 cohort. Applications will be accepted from February 1 – June 1. Project IDOL Fellows will receive full tuition for their MLIS degree, to be completed within 2 years, as well as the advisory support of individual mentors, and additional funds for books, conference travel and a personal computer. Project IDOL is a collaboration between the Wayne State University School of Library and Information Science and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance . WSU SLIS and the HBCU Library Alliance have received funding from the IMLS Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program to increase the diversity of the library profession. In this 3-year project, the two partner organizations will recruit, mentor, and offer an online Master of Library and Information Science degree to 10 students from historically underrepresented groups in order to achieve greater diversity among practicing library professionals. SLIS will provide the education and the HBCU library alliance will assist with recruitment and retention through mentorship of the selected students by library professionals with senior level experience and prior mentorship training. Take Part in Virtual Library Legislative Day

Greetings from our nation's capital! Your Michigan Library Delegation has been busy today visiting with all of the Michigan Congressional Delegation educating them on national library issues and asks as well as letting them know how federal funding benefits what libraries do in Michigan. Joining us in D.C. this year are public, school, academic librarians, trustees and private citizens who support their libraries join us from Michigan to talk to our legislators and their staff about LSTA and E-Rate funding, Early Learning, Net Neutrality, Open Access, School Libraries via ESEA--Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Workforce Investment , Privacy & Surveillance and more. My colleague Joe Hamlin, State Data Coordinator at the Library of Michigan created 2 informative pieces on how we use LSTA funding in Michigan one of which is an amazing Info-graphic on the amazing work public libraries are going in all of Michigan's 14 Congressional districts and state-wide.
