Steve Dix Retirement Open House

Please join the staff and board of Muskegon Area District Library in honoring Steve Dix on his retirement. The open house will be on Friday, May 30, 2014 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the MADL administration building located at 4845 Airline Road, Muskegon MI 49441. We will have pizza, cake and beverages. Steve began his library career in 1966 as a part time bookmobile driver at the Genesee District Library and held many professional positions during his tenure there. He served as Director at the Cadillac District Library and the Mid-Michigan Library Cooperative. Since 2007, he has been Director of the Muskegon Area District Library. Steve is looking forward to travel, visiting family throughout the country, golfing, boating and spending time with his wife, Judi. Please RSVP to 231-737-6248 or to this e-mail. Florida Murder with Michigan connection

We have a patron looking for a book that was written about a Michigan man who was murdered in Florida. She believes it occurred in the 1970s, specifically 1973, along the road/highway. We are truly stumped on this one. The other clue is that she believes the title is "something" & "something", but obviously doesn't know what the "somethings" are. Hello all, Surely you don't want to miss out on this every other year opportunity just because Michigan has had a bit of weather this winter. Shannon and her team have worked diligently on this conference so it will be one of or THE best ever. The transportation is being worked out by Shannon and the transportation folks, and she expects that everyone should be able to get over to the island. The weather is expected to improve even more by the time you will be ready to return to the mainland. Please do not let all of the work that went into getting this conference ready go to waste. This is a video of the Sacre Bleu, the only boat Shepler's has running, leaving St. Ignace yesterday. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10154104350790217&set=vb.199146720216&… I called Shepler's this morning to ask how 150 people would fit on this boat. They hope to be able to put buses and vans on the deck and fill them with people, but they aren't sure they will be able to because yesterday ice was coming over the bow. Getting there is only our first concern. With a shift in the wind it could jam up again and we could be stranded on the island. Ferry service is still subject to cancellation. Grand Valley State University Libraries welcome applicants for the position of Publishing Services Manager (University Libraries) This new, entry-level position is responsible for the development, management and maintenance of the University Libraries’ publishing services program in our institutional repository, ScholarWorks@GVSU. Duties and responsibilities include facilitating set-up, design process, and ongoing maintenance for journals, conference/event communities, and open education materials in ScholarWorks, developing and maintaining relationships with authors, editors, or sponsoring entities. Qualifications include bachelor’s degree, exceptional written and oral communication skills, experience with or knowledge of institutional repository software, demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, knowledge of emerging and best practices in open access scholarly publishing; flexibility, creativity, ability to work in a changing environment; ability to work independently and collaboratively, ability to work with diverse groups. Have any of you (or more likely, your Friends organizations) worked with Stuffraiser (https://stuffraiser.com/hello) to sell books and media from your used book sales online? It's probably not a good fit for our library due the size of our used book sale and staffing/volunteer limitations, but I am curious if any libraries have seen decent payouts for books that would otherwise be sold for a quarter/end up in the Goodwill box.
