Responsibilities: The City Librarian works with the Library Commission and staff to develop long-term plans and directions for the Library program and services for an increasingly multicultural and multilingual population; plans and directs the overall operations and management of the Library; provides effective team development and leadership to the staff; works collaboratively with City elected and appointed leaders; and works in partnership with civic organizations, agencies, and elected officials at the state and national level. Experience at the senior executive level in an urban public library, an advanced degree in business, public administration or a similar field, and success reporting to a policy-making board or commission are highly desirable. Oh dear, as if things couldn't get any worse . . . I heard back from fellow govdoc librarians through GovDoc-L that they too had not heard back from the IRS on forms and now we know why. Here's the post to GovDoc-L this afternoon with news that will greatly impact what or whether we get any tax forms this year: If you are at ALA Midwinter and able to...Now that the CROmnibus (2015 federal budget) has passed, the IRS got a $300 million cut for forms and distribution..so they will be changing their services in libraries. Before this happened they wanted to talk with us before making any decisions, so, they have agreed to come to MW to listen to what public librarians want the IRS priorities to be.Trish Evans will be in Chicago as a representative of the IRS. She is the Director of Distribution and the person who agreed to send out more forms and instructional booklets this season. We are confirmed for a room on Sunday, February 1 from 11:30 TO 12:30 PM in MCP W 187. Metta T. Lansdale, Jr. Retires from TADL After Five Years of Dedicated Service to the District

*LIBRARY BOARD ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT OF DIRECTOR, METTA LANSDALE* Traverse City, Mich.; (December 29, 2014) The Traverse Area District Library (TADL) Board of Trustees has announced the retirement of Metta T. Lansdale, Jr. after five years of dedicated service as the director of the library system and more than 20 years of combined library service. The library will host a retirement open house in honor of Lansdale on *Sunday, January 4 from 1-3 p.m.* in the McGuire Community Room at the Main Library located at 610 Woodmere Ave. in Traverse City. The community is invited and encouraged to stop by to visit and extend their well wishes. Lansdale, who has served TADL since November 2009, will retire effective December 31, 2014. During her service as Director she oversaw TADL as it increased its lending transactions by 27 percent. In addition she oversaw a successful 2012 transition to RFID technology offering improved materials handling and collection control district wide as well as a redesigned website featuring an integrated TADL catalog search. These service enhancements were creative and sustainable solutions to address revenue challenges, while continuing to improve the high quality of services offered to TADL patrons and the community at large. “Metta's vision, ideas, and leadership were essential to the significant progress TADL has made during her tenure," said Tom Kachadurian, president of the TADL Board of Trustees. Kachadurian remarked on Lansdale’s specific attention to integrating technology with TADL circulation systems and the addition of MeLCat, a statewide sharing resource for patrons. In addition to her service to the library system, Lansdale was also a member of the Traverse City Rotary Club, Leadership Lunch Club, NW Michigan Regional Selection Panel for the Michigan Humanities Council Great Michigan Read as well as serving on the board of the MCLS, the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, MMLL, the Mid-Michigan Library League and an active member of the Michigan Library Association (MLA) and the Michigan Center for the Book. Lansdale said it has been an honor to serve the Grand Traverse community and she appreciates the support the community has offered TADL through usage and contributions. Prior to joining TADL in 2009, Lansdale served multiple years as director of the Royal Oak Public Library and the Chelsea District Library. She is a graduate of the School of Library Science from the University of Michigan. MAP Update: 95% And Much More

All, I am very glad to share with you the news that as of today, MAP checkouts for this year are now at 95% of last year's total. Great work, and I hope to be able to report when we all return to our places (with bright smiling faces, of course) on January 5 that we have reached or exceeded 100% of last year's total MAP checkouts, a bit more than seven months into the program. Let's make it happen! We are still working on the proposed MAP expansion that we've noted, that would take MAP to the next level for 2015. As proposed this would increase the number of participating MAP venues from the current 100+, to over 300. Big, big stuff. Also, we are working closely with the director of one venue, and the marketing manager of another venue, both of which will be opening in 2015, to get them into MAP. We've had multiple, positive conversations with the two, and I can tell you that both will be extremely popular destinations with families. We will continue to do our best to get both of these venues into the MAP program in 2015. Finally, we are pleased to be able to announce the addition of an enhancement to the MAP software, beginning with MAP Year 3 in May, 2015 that has not been available previously. This will not be a publicly visible enhancement, but librarians have been asking for this upgrade since the beginning of statewide MAP. Up until now we have been able to report the total number of checkouts, the percentages compared to the previous year (as per the subject line of this message), etc. But we've either not been able to report individual library checkouts for MAP or, as we've done for some TLN libraries, we've only been able to obtain and report checkouts by going through a very arduous process in order to obtain said stats. We are thus very happy to be able to report that beginning with MAP Year 3, we will be able to report individual library checkout stats for MAP! I don't yet know what format these reports will take, ie we may report same through cooperative directors, quarterly, or via some other method. Tbd, as they say.
