This free program is open to all public librarians (particularly children's librarians) and administrators. It will be held the morning of March 12, 2012 at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The attached brochure went out to all ALSC members in mid fall. EatPlayGrow: Museum/Library/Community Partnership for Healthy Families, will highlight an exciting new project developed as part of a national health initiative to combat early childhood obesity. Developed and tested by the Children's Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) with the cooperation of the National Institutes of Health, it combines innovative and hands-on arts and literacy-based activities with the latest medical and scientific information to activate and support healthy behaviors. This participatory Symposium presentation will include engaging activities from the EatPlayGrow(tm) curriculum, as well as evaluation results from CMOM's four pilot studies. The presentation will also provide strategies for creating, implementing and sustaining a community network by building capacity to leverage existing resources in museum and library settings. Participants will receive an EatPlayGrow(tm) Curriculum Resource CD with Evaluation Report. Hello all, Here is more information about this program: *Call for Entries: Animal Tales* Are you an animal lover? Got a great story to share about your pet or any animal, the outdoors or wildlife? As part of The Big Read celebration of Jack London's The Call of the Wild, Dearborn Public Library is sending out a call for short stories, poems or essays about animals, people's pets, the outdoors or wildlife. Email your original story, poem or essay of 1-4 pages to hfischer(a)ci.dearborn.mi.us. The stories can be real or fictional. This program is open to anyone (all ages). The entry deadline is February 1, 2014. We hope to compile selected stories and publish them in book format as "Call of the Wild Dearborn: Animal Tales." Please spread the word. 2014 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour Application

The 2014 Michigan Notable Books have been announced. See the Michigan Notable Books web site at www.michigan.gov/notablebooks<http://www.michigan.gov/notablebooks> for a complete list and more detailed information about the program. Authors will visit 50 libraries across the state in April, May and June of 2014. If your library is interested in hosting an author this year, please complete the attached "Application to Participate In the Author Tour" form and fax or mail it back to the Library of Michigan by Friday, January 31. The Author Tour is open to all types of Michigan libraries. To help with assigning authors, please list your top 5 author "picks". Remember that by agreeing to take part in the MNB Author Tour your library may be assigned any of the 2013 authors on this year's list. A complete list of the participating authors is not available at this time. Several of the authors will not be able to take part in the MNB Author Tour. Every effort is made to match libraries with requested authors, but author availability and scheduling can be extremely challenging. Your flexibility and understanding is greatly appreciated. Once author assignments have been made, libraries will need to work directly with authors to schedule an agreeable date. The success of the Michigan Notable Books program is due in large part to the great programs individual libraries have organized in past years. This program would not succeed without Michigan libraries' commitment to informing patrons, readers and your communities about the MNB list. Your hard work and partnership does not go unnoticed. Last Call - Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference Call for Proposals

On behalf of the Conference Program Committee, we would like to invite you to submit a proposal for the Great Lakes Resource Sharing Conference. The event will be held in Toledo, OH at the Hilton Garden Inn at Perrysburg on Friday, June 6, 2014. This conference is an opportunity for individuals working in resource sharing to gather information and communicate with other colleagues. We invite program proposals from September 16, 2013 to January 17, 2014. If you want to submit a proposal but need a bit more time to flesh out the abstract or to fill up a panel with speakers, just enter a placeholder record in the form with your name and contact info, a brief title, and in the place where we ask for the abstract, just leave us a note telling us what you can about your proposal and that you need a bit more time to pull the final details together. We will contact you by the end of January 2014 for a final submission. Accepted program proposal submissions should be 45 minutes in length including time for questions. Supervised practice is extremely important to develop the skills and judgment to drive safely and is required for the Level 1 Graduated Driver License. “But if a teen doesn’t have access to a vehicle or if a parent or guardian isn’t readily available, what is the answer? That’s when the partnership between the Secretary of State and Big Brothers Big Sisters can help.” Johnson made her announcement during a news conference at the Marshall Street Armory, home of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region office in Lansing, with Philip Knight, executive director, BBBSMCR, and Big Brothers Graham Filler from St. Johns and Aaron Fox from Portland. Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for young people in America, claiming about 3,000 lives annually, or eight lives per day. In 2012, 10 percent of drivers in Michigan involved in fatal crashes were under the age of 21. Coaching a teen driver is an important part of driver education. With a Level 1 license or learner’s permit, young drivers must log a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving with a parent, guardian or designated adult age 21 or older. Under the pilot program, BBBS volunteers or “Bigs” are encouraged to serve as the driving coach and role model for their Little Brother or Sister. The Secretary of State provides materials, including access to a free smartphone app that helps track hours behind the wheel and offers coaching tips. No additional auto insurance is required when driving with a teen with a Level 1 license. Helping teens obtain the training and practice they need to learn how to drive safely and responsibly reduces the crash risk and will save lives. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is about building relationships between adults and young people that change lives,” Knight said. “We are pleased to work with Secretary of State Ruth Johnson in developing a program with our mentors to help young drivers become better drivers. Driving is an important step towards greater self-reliance in today’s society. Lack of transportation can hamper young people’s efforts to find employment, housing and educational opportunities.” Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing program introduces driving concepts gradually, allowing young drivers to master certain skills before increasing their driving privileges with the GDL 2 and 3 licenses. Teens are not required to advance to the next license level. A teen who feels hesitant may continue driving with a GDL Level 1 license until age 18. Approximately 100,000 Level 1 licenses were issued in 2013. “You never forget who taught you to drive,” said Fox, who is a BBBS board member and was joined by his Little Brother, Michael Olivas, at the news conference. “As a Big Brother and a driving coach, I can make a difference for a teen driver that will affect their whole life. Good driving habits can save lives.” Added Johnson, “By ensuring that young teens get the practice they need, the partnership will help reduce the chances of their involvement in a crash.” Big Brothers Big Sisters has been impacting the lives of children for more than 100 years. Two charities, the Big Brothers Association and the Catholic Big Sisters (later Big Sisters International) founded in the early 1900s merged in 1977 to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
