The manuals now include four sections: Early Literacy, Children, Teen and Adult. We are looking for your best program ideas for all four. The theme for 2015 is Heroes. Please take a minute to go to the survey and let us know what you are looking for in the Heroes Summer Reading manual. 50th Anniversary of March on Washington

Hello, The 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom will take place this Wednesday, August 28. We wanted to remind everyone of the website DALNET created in 2008 which contains a timeline, a brief biography of Dr. King, and links to YouTube videos with speeches by and about Dr. King. The inspirational speech, "I Have a Dream" which he delivered at this demonstration attended by over 250,000 people in Washington, D.C. is included. On Thursday, October 24th, 2013, Connect Michigan and the Library of Michigan will host the 2013 Michigan Broadband Conference to bring together community and economic development professionals, local government officials and staff, libraries, educators, technology providers, and many others to collaborate and share best practices for expanding broadband and technology access, adoption, and use in communities across the state. The conference will be held at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan from 10AM to 5PM. Rural infrastructure, technology use by small businesses, digital job creation, and entrepreneurship are a sampling of some of the topics that will be discussed and about which best practices will be shared. The conference will feature state and nationally recognized economic development and technology speakers including Blair Levin of the Aspen Institute and chief architect of the National Broadband Plan, as well as Mike Finney, president and CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and many more. Fwd: Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Fall 2014 Grants

This announcement is being sent to several lists. Please excuse any duplication. The Metro Detroit Book & Author Society is pleased to announce that the following two (2) grants are available. These will be awarded at the October 21, 2013, Book & Author Luncheon at Burton Manor in Livonia. The winners will receive a free ticket to the Fall 2013 luncheon and must be present to receive the grant. Grant winners are also required to submit a 22’’ x 28” project report poster showing how the grant was used to be displayed at the Spring 2014 luncheon. Application forms with instructions and reporting requirements are attached. Applications are due on Monday, September 23, 2013. 1. The Elaine R. Irvin Friends Award: $1000. This grant is awarded to a Friends of the Library group in the metro-Detroit area to support a program or project that fills a significant need affecting the library's patrons and community. The award was established to honor the late Elaine R. Irvin, who was a devoted member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society Board for many years. Elaine worked for the Friends of the Detroit Public Library and was dedicated to the principle that "good libraries need good Friends." 2. The Dick Johnston Award: $2000. This grant is awarded to a public library in the metro-Detroit area for the purpose of establishing or improving a library collection. The award was established to honor the late Dick Johnston, who was a member of the Metro-Detroit Book & Author Society and served as its President in 1980 and 1981. Mr. Johnston was also President of the Michigan Library Association and Director of the Birmingham and Bloomfield Township Libraries. MCLS disaster planning & risk management special program update!

MCLS invites you to view "Preserving Family Treasures" on September 9, 2013 at 6 PM (Eastern Daylight Time). You can attend in-person at the Delta Township District Library in Lansing, Michigan or online via live stream here: http://www.mcls.org/treasures. No log-in is necessary. This event will be recorded and made available in the future. This event is free and open to the public. We encourage you to share this information with your patrons and to host viewing parties at your library. Do you have grandma’s wedding gown, a tintype of a great-great uncle during the Civil War or even the family bible from the old country? Family and personal historical collections are a diary of where we come from and what is important to us. Most of these collections are stored in attics, basements or under other conditions which constantly place them in harm’s way. Internationally recognized preservationist and the ALA 2012 Ken Haycock Award winner Jeanne Drewes' presentation will focus on appropriate storage environments, enclosure options for varying formats, steps to mitigate damage and handling instructions. If you are a family historian or the caretaker of a small library or historical society collection this is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the very best. You may bring materials for recommendations from Ms. Drewes after her public presentation. Ms Drewes currently serves as Chief of Binding and Collections Care in the Preservation Directorate at the Library of Congress and as Manager for the Mass Deacidification Program. Librarian for Conservation and Digitization at the Library of Michigan Kevin Driedger will also join the conversation during the Q and A period of this event. ***************************************************************** MCLS also invites staff from all library types to attend the Disaster Planning & Risk Management special program. Both natural and human generated disasters regularly plague our libraries. Mitigating damage is an ongoing process of preparation. Explore strategies for success and learn practical hands-on techniques in disaster management with Ms. Drewes for a two, non-consecutive, day program on September 10, and November 8, 2013. On September 10, participants will tour the host facility (Delta Township District Library, in Lansing, Michigan) with Drewes as tour guide identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities to better prepare against disaster. A workshop will follow with participants engaging in hands-on recovery techniques. The day will conclude with an informational session on developing a disaster plan. Between September 10 and next session participants will work on their plans. On November 8, the group will reconvene to discuss, ask questions and finalize their individual plans under the tutelage of Drewes. In addition property insurance will be addressed. Strengthening institutional buy-in two participants from each organization are strongly encouraged. The same two individuals are not necessary for both sessions. This program is part of a series brought to you by MCLS, the Cooperative Directors Association and the Library of Michigan. IT Support Assistant Under the management of the Information Technology (IT) Department Head, Information Technology Support staff assists the Systems Administrator in maintaining, diagnosing and fixing problems with computer systems that are noticeable to a significant part of the organization and large numbers of patrons. The IT Support Assistant responds to problems with hardware, software, network services and desktop applications. Description: This position is classified as provisional part-time and provides no benefits afforded to employees classified as regular, is non-exempt from overtime and requires evening and weekend hours. Seventeen (17) hours/week. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; other duties as assigned. Assists with installation, configuration, and routine maintenance and inventory of computers, printers and desktop software Assists with troubleshooting network connectivity and client access problems associated with servers, switches, desktops and cabling Assists staff and the public with use of software, hardware and peripherals by identifying basic computer problems and guiding users through corrective steps Improves IT support capability of library staff by documenting computing tasks Participates in other occasional assignments in support of the library's goals and objectives Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience with Desktop, network and printing systems, smart phones, tablets and mobile technologies One year of experience with Microsoft Windows computing environments, including Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems, and Office Suite 2010 One year of experience with Internet connectivity, including networking, wireless, web browsers, HTML, Flash Java, JavaScript, etc. Written and verbal communication skills at the level typically acquired with the third or fourth year of high school Punctuality and dependability Consistent display of public service attitude that reflects the library's values Ability to work creatively, collaboratively and effectively with patrons/staff of varied backgrounds, ages and abilities Strong analytical and problem solving skills Ability to organize, analyze, interpret and exchange technical information Remains informed of trends in information technology Preferred Qualifications: Written and verbal communication skills at the level typically acquired with enrollment in a post high school degree program Help Desk, Phone and Customer Service Experience. Working familiarity with PC imaging and deployment software Essential Functions: Ability to bend, stretch and lift equipment up to 50 lbs.
