Steampunk @ the Library! The Addison Twp Public Library’s 2013 Teen Summer Programming features a three hour Steampunk Minicon on Monday, July 22 at 6 to 9pm. Presenters will include Michael Orlando of Orlando Art International who’s screen credits and projects include: Hunger Games and Transformers Dark Side of the Moon and Ben Despard, artist and Steampunk Airship Captain. More guests to be announced! Steampunk is a hot trend in books, movies, art, clothing and jewelry that captures the culture and technology of Victorian times-“steam”, coupled with the fantasy and rebellious attitudes of today-“punk”, as it were. Movies or TV with a Steampunk vibe include Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Who and Hugo, for example. Examples of teen steampunk fiction include Airborn by Kenneth Oppel, The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade, Incarceron by Catherine Fisher and Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. Our very own Steampunk Minicon will include a costume contest with prizes, workshops, vendors, airships, steampunk movie as well as diy craft stations. Incorporating MeLCat into discovery services

Hi Everyone: Ferris State is in the process of implementing the Primo discovery service, and we're interested in knowing how other libraries with discovery services are incorporating MeLCat. Solutions from other Primo libraries might be most relevant for us, but we are interested in knowing what libraries with other discovery systems are doing as well. Employee Cell Phone use

As someone who's worked in different organizations that have had policies at both ends of the spectrum, I have to say, the one thing that irritated me the most about the stricter policy, including the clause about phones/devices remaining in lockers when "on duty", was that it felt as if I were being treated like a child. It wasn't even the fact that they wanted the phone to stay in the locker, it was the way it was worded, which made me (and others) feel as though administration was saying that I was not an adult capable of controlling my own behavior, so they were going to do it for me. I *am* an adult and I *am* capable of keeping my phone in my pocket/hip pouch without needing to check it every 2 minutes. On the other hand, the more lenient policy did not seem to encourage overuse of anyone's cell phone. I don't recall seeing any of my colleagues at that organization abusing the policy, but rather using it the way Nancy and Julie both stated, to receive quick messages from children/caregivers, etc. I'm not an administrator so I can't speak from that side of the issue, but as an employee, I'd say that if you do choose to go the stricter route, at least attempt to make the wording such that it won't sound like you're treating your employees as if they're children instead of adults. Employee Cell phone use

If you have anyone with a smart phone (or maybe that is what you mean by a cell phone) or other "mobile device," especially if the person is under a certain age - which I won't specify - it will almost certainly be necessary for you to have a "mobile device" policy. The smart phones/tablets/pads are used for old-school voice telephone calls, text messages, social media messages, web use and more with a huge number of "apps" that do a lot of "stuff." They are virtually addictive and amongst avid users almost ubiquitous in their use - unless controlled. Younger people in my current office - which is not a public contact office - take them out and look at/use them, I would estimate, every ten minutes or less. Our organization has an (old) policy that business phones are not to be used for personal calls so the organization is playing into the use of mobile devices which can, of course, be used for personal communication on a number of levels. The organization's internet is also filtered to bar access to email and social media sites - which also encourages the use of mobile devices for personal communication. Since personal communication is no part of public service, I would suggest that use of personal mobile devices be prohibited unless the employee is "off duty" (break, meal, etc) AND away from their work location. The library should be providing all the necessary tools for work-related communication and public service (computers with appropriate access to needed resources) so there should be no need for personal mobile devices in the work space. A policy providing for that should be fairly easy to draft. I expect that this approach will be fairly unpopular with those who are tied to their mobile devices, but I strongly believe that public service employees (paid for providing public service) or volunteers (who have offered to do public service) should be ready, willing and able at all times on duty to do just that. They should not be distracted or seem unavailable to patrons due to personal device usage. The same would be true for conducting other personal activities (e.g. balancing a checkbook, doing crosswords, etc - which can also be done on mobile devices - or sewing, filing nails, arranging a stamp collection, sorting laundry, etc - which cannot). Former State Librarian Francis X. Scannell

On behalf of State Librarian Nancy Robertson The Library of Michigan would like to acknowledge the death of former State Librarian Francis X. Scannell, who passed away in Mercer Island, Washington on June 17, 2013. The State Board of Libraries appointed Francis X. Scannell to the position of State Librarian in January 1968. At the time of his appointment Mr. Scannell was the head of Michigan State University's reference department, but he was a familiar face around the Michigan State Library (Library of Michigan) having worked there from 1953 to 1965 as head of Reader Services. Mr. Scannell led the state library through major changes at library itself and for libraries statewide. These changes included significant austerity measures due to cuts in federal and state funding and a controversial new reorganization of library services around the state into a system of regional cooperatives. During his tenure, the state library expanded services to encompass the interests of community college and university libraries, enhanced services to state correctional and mental health library facilities and took the first step into computerized technology by joining the fledgling Ohio College Library Center (OCLC). Mr. Scannell resigned as Michigan's State Librarian on Feb. 22, 1983, having worked at the state library for a total of 27 years. The Library of Michigan would like to recognize his dedication to library service in the state of Michigan and extend our condolences to his family and friends.
