2013 State Librarian's Excellence Award nomination form now available

Dear Michigan libraries, The nomination form for the 2013 State Librarian's Excellence Award has been posted. The deadline for nominations this year is September 13, 2013. The Library of Michigan Foundation's State Librarian's Excellence Award is awarded annually to a library (any type) that exemplifies excellence in customer service. One (1) library in the state of Michigan receives this prestigious award each year. The recipient library receives a $2,000 cash prize and a distinctive trophy for display in its public area. Two (2) Library of Michigan Foundation Citations of Excellence are presented, and the recipient libraries will each receive $500 and an attractive small trophy for display. Library directors, trustees, library users or administrators may make nominations. ExpressSOS opportunity for Michigan libraries

Hi everyone, As with all public library service in Michigan, services provided are determined at the local level. As such, opportunities to highlight the essential nature of our public libraries and to serve our patrons in more expansive ways are just that - opportunities. It is up to each library to make the determination about participating in the ExpressSOS partnership (and/or in the Affordable Health Care Act insurance enrollment initiative). You know best about your capacity and resources, but I encourage you to participate in them if at all possible, as the light that shines positively on libraries will help "raise all the boats in the harbor" so to speak. In any case, whether we do or do not all take them up on it, we want to thank the Secretary of State's Office for engaging in this potential partnership with Michigan libraries. Nancy Nancy R. ExpressSOS and Michigan Libraries

On Wednesday, July 10th at 3 pm, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will kick off the ExpressSOS-Library partnership at a press event with Sterling Hgts. Public Library Director Tammy Turgeon and yours truly representing the Library of Michigan. Area library directors both public and academic are more than welcome to come and stand with Secretary Ruth and Director Tammy at the press event which will be videotaped. Attached is the letter that I sent out via Michlib-l a week ago or so, announcing the partnership. We're hoping that libraries will start displaying the table tents and window clings recently mailed to you in support of ExpressSOS and Libraries. Toni Benson, Van Buren District Library

Dear Colleagues, I am sorry to report that our dear and beloved Local History Librarian, Toni Benson, has passed away after a long and courageous fight with cancer. Toni had a sincere passion in collecting, preserving and making available local history and genealogy materials; and she genuinely loved helping researchers of all skill levels with their quests. Her talents directly created a local history department known for its outstanding resources and services in southwestern Michigan, and her enthusiasm for local history has been passed on to countless researchers, volunteers and librarians. We will truly miss her. Funeral arrangements: Visitation is Monday, July 8, 4-8pm at Betzler Funeral Home 60900 M-40, Paw Paw, MI. Funeral service is Tuesday, July 9, 10am at Betzler Funeral Home. "We applaud the CMS for recognizing the role that libraries play in connecting patrons with government agencies," said Maureen Sullivan, president of the American Library Association. "Our libraries look forward to guiding Americans navigate through the new health marketplace." The Marketplace website, HealthCare.gov<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=1&d=73&mid=363882&m=1568> will be the primary tool for delivering information to Americans about their health coverage options. As prominent providers of Internet access and digital literacy training for people who lack Internet connections at home, libraries can anticipate intensified demand for computer services. IMLS and CMS will work cooperatively to make sure that libraries are aware of and able to connect patrons with information resources and community partners who are trained enrollment assistors. IMLS has also awarded $286,104 to OCLC to support the effort through its flagship public library program WebJunction.org<http://www.idevmail.net/link.aspx?l=2&d=73&mid=363882&m=1568>. The goal is to assure that librarians have the information and connections with local experts needed to connect their patrons to information about the Health Insurance Marketplace when open enrollment begins October 1, 2013. OCLC will work closely with ZeroDivide, a social impact organization that helps underserved communities realize the transformative power of technology to improve health outcomes, to implement the program. “Libraries are a lifeline for Americans who wouldn’t otherwise have access to information and communication technologies,” said Cathy De Rosa, OCLC Vice President for the Americas and Global Marketing, “and now online access to health information is critical to leading a healthy, productive life. OCLC is proud to continue to support public libraries in ensuring that their communities stay connected to the information they need to thrive.” Libraries have a long history of meeting public demand for consumer health information. A recent IMLS study showed that an estimated 37 percent of library computer users (28 million people) use library computers and seek assistance from librarians for health and wellness issues, including learning about medical conditions, finding health care providers, and assessing health insurance options.
