Hi All - Libraries are a great place for patrons to find fantastic documentaries. I wanted to recommend a few documentary DVD titles, and ask others for their recommendations. If I can find links, I'll add them after the title. Everyone rushes in to us for the latest theatrical titles, but there are some wonderful gems in the documentaries that get over-looked and it is only through libraries that many of them will be found. Sad News: Frances H. (Fran) Pletz

All, It is with sadness that we share news of the death of long-time Michigan public library advocate Frances H. (Fran) Pletz, who passed away Monday, December 2 in Charlevoix. We will share details regarding arrangements as they become available. In addition to her 13 years of service as Executive Director of the Michigan Library Association, service on the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees as well as the Library of Michigan Foundation's Board of Directors, Mrs. Pletz's legacy is carried on in Michigan public libraries in three very significant ways: 1. Her work with Senator Faust on legislation that ultimately became Public Act 89 of 1978, which serves as the basis for state aid to public libraries as well as the creation of the system of library cooperatives that remains in place today. 2. The Frances H. Pletz Award for Excellence in Service to Youth. The award, named for Mrs. Pletz because of her exemplary library service to teens in our state, was established in 1978 by the Young Adult Division of the Michigan Library Association. It is given annually to a Michigan library staff person who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of library service to youth, ages 0-18, throughout their career. 3. Jazz program “A Great Day in Harlem” with jazz expert Stu Johnson on January 14 at the Warren Civic Center Library

Hello, One summer day in 1958 a photographer took a picture of dozens of America’s jazz legends all gathered in one place. This famous photograph became known as “A Great Day in Harlem.” Stu Johnson, jazz expert and a member of the Michigan Jazz Record Collectors, will be with us on Tuesday, January 14 at 6:00 to discuss this famous Esquire magazine photograph. He will tell us the back story and play some of the great music of these artists. I am attaching our flyer for this event in case you would like to print some for your patrons. All are welcome! Responses to my questions regarding new video game consoles

Thanks to everyone to responded to my original post about ordering games for the PS4 and Xbox One. If you're interested in seeing what people had to say, here are the responses: One librarian said, "I have already placed a large order because I want the titles on the shelves before the holidays." She isn't going to stop ordering PS3 and Xbox 360 quite yet, but eventually she might. These are the titles she ordered in both of the new formats: FIFA 14 Need for speed rivals Madden NFL 25 Battlefield 4 Just Dance 2014 Call of duty: ghosts Assassin's creed black flag NBA 2K LEGO Marvel A hospital librarian asked her 16-year-old gamer son what he thought, and he said, “Libraries shouldn't start stocking PS4 or Xbox One games yet! It's too early in their lifespan! There aren't enough games yet." Another librarian says, "I've already started orderinig PS4 and Xbox One. I will still order PS3 and Xbox 360 but probably cut back. People are going to expect this, and if you don't stay relevant, you'll become obsolete." And finally, someone said "I am going to start purchasing PS4 and Xbox One games in our new budget year which starts in July. I may purchase requests (depending on how popular the game is). I will probably stop purchasing for PS3 and Xbox 360 since our budget can't support all of these platforms." Hope this helps! The Camp provides a diverse and enriching arts-centered learning experience for more than 2,200 talented youth from around the world. Involvement in Interlochen Arts Camp not only makes a difference in the life of young artists, it also enriches the lives of those who work among the arts community each summer. *Academic Library Intern* *2 positions available* This is a great 7-week internship opportunity for someone interested in librarianship as a career. This position serves the needs of the Interlochen Arts Camp, helping to provide campers, faculty, and staff with resources to support their arts specialty and personal interests while on campus. Duties include circulation, shelving, book processing, and implementing summer programs. Assist library patrons with finding information utilizing a variety of databases and the catalog. Other responsibilities include summer projects ranging from collections management to work on the library website. Candidates currently in an MLS program are preferred. This position serves on the front lines of Interlochen’s young institutional archives initiative. This person will be providing much needed assistance in the organization of the archives, conducting inventories across campus, and assisting in the digitization and cataloging of print and photographic archival materials. Assist the archivist in a variety of capacities. Main job functions include handling, processing, and cataloging archival materials by providing standard metadata. Responsible for digitizing photographic collections and handling negatives, slides, and print photographic materials. This position will be sharing their time (40 hrs/week) between the Institutional Archives and Photo Archives. Other assignments depending upon the interests and skills of the intern. Candidates currently in an MLS or archival studies program are preferred. Proficient with technology, extremely detailed oriented, work well within a framework. Remembering Fran Pletz

Dear all, We have some sad news to share: * Remembering Fran Pletz Frances H. Pletz (Fran) was born in 1920 in Chicago, Illinois. She just recently passed away at the age of 93. Fran was truly the first lady of libraries and librarianship in the state of Michigan. Among her many other accomplishments, she served as the executive director of the Michigan Library Association from 1969 to 1982 and she served on the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees from the 1992 through 2005. She also served on the Library of Michigan Foundation Board of Trustees as well. [Fran Pletz seated with State Librarian Nancy Robertson] Fran visited the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees meeting on September 12, 2012, with her son Jim who is the director of The Library Network in Novi. am looking for a photograph of Harold G. "Dick" Johnson. (He was the director here from 1955-1957. He resigned to become the assistant director of the Flint Public Library Library as well as president of the Michigan Library Association in 1964-65.Eventually he became the joint director of the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham and the Bloomfield Township Public.In 1980 he received the Michigan Library Association's Librarian of the Year Award.He died in 1985.) Digital images are fine. We want something which can be used as part of a display for our centennial celebration.
