Happy Monday everyone! Here is all of the info from last week's informal gathering; Natalie and I want to thank everyone who attended and shared their own experiences. We hope it was helpful and we're looking forward to meeting again in May! We are thinking Monday, May 2 at 10am. We'll have an agenda this time: feel free to send me topics and questions. Summer Reading social media content/campaign will be on the list. Just a brief run-down of our meeting: TikTok is beneficial to use in libraries because it is primarily used by youth in the tween & teen age groups, although adults are starting to join. Having a personal account is better than the business account because of the music restrictions (business accounts provide analytics). Use TikTok to engage with the community by sharing the patron experience (relating/funny), using TikTok trends, and showcasing behind the scenes at the Library (unboxing, processing & other things we do). BookTok is also incredibly popular and successful. Most libraries that have TikTok record and edit using their phones and the TikTok app, but other libraries use Canva, Premiere Pro, and a small smattering of other software. Social Media Policies are starting to include TikTok. Editorial Calendars were shared. Content ideas were shared. It's time consuming but important to reach the younger audiences. To those who reached out regarding these titles—thank you. We appreciate you sharing your comments and opinions. We have removed these eBooks from hoopla These eBooks are inaccurate and sources of propaganda that have no place in the hoopla Instant collection. My team has removed the titles from our platform. I apologize for any difficulties their inclusion may have caused you, your staff, or cardholders. How these titles made it onto hoopla The titles from these five independent publishers came to us from our network of more than 18,000 unique publishers. This is a complex matter Due to the hateful nature of these specific titles, I have no regrets about having our team remove them from hoopla. Despite my personal objections to these eBooks, I must acknowledge that this situation highlights a complex issue that Libraries have always faced in curating their collections—avoiding a culture of censorship. Just as Libraries receive challenges on items in their physical collections, we receive challenges on individual titles. We review those concerns and make the best decisions we can for the overall hoopla community. Women Making History at the Library of Michigan, Read Michigan Madness Book Bracket Challenge, New Library of Michigan Website [Library of Michigan logo] Special Collections Update - March 11, 2022 Women Making History at the Library of Michigan, Read Michigan Madness Book Bracket Challenge, New Library of Michigan Website [State Librarian, Harriet Tenney]Women's History Month: Michigan's First Woman State Librarian Harriet Tenney, when she accepted an appointment as Michigan's state librarian in 1869, became the first woman to hold this position and started a tradition of female leadership of the State Library that went on for 100 consecutive. >From 1859 to 1869, while her husband Eugene Tenney served as state librarian, Harriet took advantage of the many opportunities to aid her husband in administering the State Library. When Eugene resigned and recommended his wife for the position, Governor H.P. Baldwin and the Legislature appointed Harriet Tenney as state librarian. Combining the knowledge she gained from her husband's decade as state librarian with her own vision, Harriet Tenney had an immediate effect on the State Library. During her first two year term, the collection grew by 5,000 volumes to 30,097, and popular authors were added to the collection. That Tenney realized the significance of her position is reflected in use of italics and capital letters in the opening paragraph of her first annual report: "By the advice of the Chief Executive of the State and with the unanimous consent and approbation of the Senate, on the 31st day of March 1869, this Library was placed in charge of a WOMAN." Harriet Tenney's first major tests involved moving the State Library and its collection to two new locations within the first nine years of her tenure. In 1871 the library was moved from the old State Capitol to the new State Office Building. During this time, Harriet worked tirelessly, even denying herself any vacation during the year of the move. In 1875 appropriations for the library dipped down to $500 as all budget and legislative focus was on the construction of the new State Capitol. Although appropriations were reduced, the Legislature's high esteem for Harriet Tenney was apparent, as her salary was increased to $1,000, making her pay equal to the governors'! During her tenure, Tenney worked to extend the state librarian's role beyond a mere keeper of books. The first state librarian to be a member of the American Library Association, she attended the ALA annual conference in Philadelphia, coming back to Michigan with many new concepts. As library visitation increased, she formulated plans to accommodate patrons' needs, increased correspondence and began cataloging books with cards, which necessitated significant clerical help. Again, Tenney was able to win over the Legislature - an assistant State Librarian was appointed and plans for a card catalog system implemented. Mrs. Tenney was appointed state librarian for 11 consecutive terms by seven governors, serving 22 years before leaving the position in 1891. Her last report lists a collection of over 56,000 books. Assistant State Librarian Mary Spencer wrote of her role model Mrs. Tenney that "the library was her life and her joy; she loved the books as the mother does her child, and watched them closely." FY2022 State Aid to Public Libraries

STATE AID FY2022 The new state aid rates have been computed for FY2022. Two million dollars has been added to the FY2022 distribution, bring the total amount of State Aid to public Libraries to $15,067.700. Per capita breakdown of $.487980 for direct and indirect state aid to public libraries. Cooperative per capita of $.487980 and a density payment of $9.76 per square mile. The FY2022 Public Library Annual Report/State Aid Application report will be available for submission from October 1, 2021 and close on February 1, 2022. Payments will be processed as follows: 1st 50% payment will be made after your state aid/annual report is reviewed ($.243990 per capita) The remaining 50% will be paid after July 1, 2022. Please note that state aid reports are reviewed in the order that they are received. The Clarke Historical Library Presents: Will Anderson and his "School Spirits" Audio Dramas

On Wednesday, March 16, at 7:00 pm EDT, the Clarke Historical Library at Central Michigan University will host the second presentation of our spring semester Speaker Series (you can find the entire line-up on the Clarke's website<https://www.cmich.edu/research/clarke-historical-library/events-exhibits-an…>). Will Anderson, professor of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts at Central Michigan University, will speak about, "School Spirits," the award-winning audio drama set at CMU. Anderson's radio plays use CMU campus landmarks at historical points in time as jumping off points for fictional audio stories. Listen to the audio, see the scripts, and learn more about how Anderson created these vignettes. This presentation is free and open to the public. The event will be broadcast via Central Michigan University's videoconferencing tool, Webex, and it will be recorded to enjoy at a later time.
