Seed Saving Program at the Alpena Library

The Alpena County George N. Fletcher Public Library will be hosting a Seed-Saving Panel on Monday, October 17th at 6:30 PM. This event will be held via Zoom and in-person at the library. Michigan State University Educator, Abbey Palmer, and Queen City Seed Library's Mike Riesterer are back to share more seed-saving tips and tricks. This time, they will demonstrate how to process seeds from beans and squash, showcase some of their seed-saving tools, and answer questions! This informal panel's discussion topic, how to save and store seeds for the next planting season, will interest beginners and experts alike. Abbey Palmer serves as a Community Food Systems Educator based in Alger County and works with schools and farms throughout the Upper Peninsula. She coordinates educational activities for people of all ages at MSU Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center (UPREC). Her areas of focus include land-based learning for K-14 students and their teachers, season extension, food policy councils, and small-scale seed system resilience. Abbey holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers Workshop in fiction and a BA in Literature from Northern Michigan University. She has worked in food systems since 2011 and spent several years engaged in diversified vegetable production using off-grid farming methods. Mike Riesterer is a volunteer who helped establish the Queen City Seed Library at Peter White Public Library. He helps to maintain the Queen City Seed Library and its Facebook page; @queencityseedlibrary. Mike works with Peterwhite Public Library and volunteers to host annual seed swaps in the spring. Online MLIS programs?

Student Advisor to a Library Board

Hi everyone! At long last I am sharing the responses I received in regards to including a non-voting high school student advisor on the board of trustees, pasted below. As always, thanks so much for your time and your generosity! -Sharon I think the Negaunee Public Library had two non-voting student members in the 1970s or 1980s on the library board. I'll see if I can dig anything up for you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Baldwin and Birmingham have had student representatives for about 25 years. We took one school year off during Covid, but have had 1-2 student reps each year. When I first started at Baldwin 7 years ago, it seemed like a dull volunteer opportunity. The student just sat at the board meeting looking really bored and didn't really contribute. We've revamped the program a bit and now the student speaks at each board meeting (either stating the mission statement or providing feedback from a teen perspective on a discussion topic - most times this is off the cuff). We also have the student pick out a project and work with the teen librarian to implement the project. One year, the student had a program where a local cat shelter came in with available cats and then teens crafted cat toys and cardboard cat homes for the shelter cats. I'm not sure what our teen is working on this year. I will say that when we've had 2 reps for the year, the attendance record is not the greatest (Oh, I thought the other rep was coming to this meeting and so on). I'm attaching the press release, parent letter, and application form we use. We work closely with the school district's community service organizer to recruit students. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think the Charlevoix Library has one. Ryan Deery is the director. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here's from back in 1986: CHAPTER 59 - LIBRARY AND CABLE TELEVISION EDITORIAL BOARD 59.03 Membership. In making appointments to the Board, the Mayor shall endeavor to maintain at least two young people as members of the Board. In making appointments of young people, the Mayor shall seek and consider consultation from the Negaunee High School students or faculty, but shall not be bound by their recommendations. The Board may select ex officio representatives, which representatives may attend the Board meetings and speak to the Board on all issues and work on committees, but shall not have voting power. The number of ex officio members shall not exceed five. No member of the City Council may serve on the Library and Cable Television Editorial Board in any capacity. There is no other explicit mention of the young people, and I wonder if they were part of the five members of the directorial board, or ex officio. Library General Email Box Policy

At times, we have patrons who are unable to access their email from a desktop computer (forgotten password, usually; recovery process likely too complicated or time consuming) and they need to send a scanned document to someone. We have, in the past, assisted them in scanning docs to pdf files and then library staff emailed them from the library’s general email account. Recently, we were asked to email medical forms/records and staff were uncomfortable interacting with patron medical documents. An alternative would be to fax such documents but that can become expensive for multi-page items. So, we’re looking at alternative methods for handling such situations that serve our patrons, but also don’t leave us open to any liabilities or other concerns. We’ve discovered that an Office Max about 10 miles away will scan and email documents so we can refer patrons there, but we’re wondering the following: 1. How do you handle situations in which a patron cannot access their email in order to send (or receive) documents from a third party? 2. What (if any) issues have you encountered in either sending/receiving documents in this way? 3. If you don’t offer this service, what alternatives do you offer? 4. Do you have any policy statements that describe how you handle such situations (e.g. emailing or NOT emailing specific types of documents (legal, medical, employment, etc.)?
