No Reservation Recommendations - NRR.ninja
by Kate Pohjola Andrade 08 May '23

08 May '23

Hello Friends, In May, 2018, Woodlands Library Cooperative’s Continuing Education Committee offered a workshop titled, “The care and feeding of our library buildings.” Discussion continued that fall at luncheon during the MLA annual conference, about how public libraries could better share facilities-related information. As it often happens, the discussion grew into the larger issue of how libraries can share a wide variety of vendor information with each other without redundancy, and the concept on which we settled was to offer a moderated website where directors can provide contact information for companies with whom they’ve had a positive experience. Thus “*No Reservation Recommendations*” (NRR) was born! Over the years, the website has evolved to include programming recommendations <https://nrr.ninja/search-programs/>, and the vendor category options are growing regularly with community-based suggestions - *thank you *for making this site the useful tool that it is today! Best of all, we’re still here and we want your contributions! NRR.ninja continues to provide librarians with more vendor options in an ever expanding area of categories and arranged by cooperative boundaries. However, in order to ensure that we continue to have a robust database, we need all of you to submit those positive recommendations. Visit https://nrr.ninja/ today to submit your vendor OR programming recommendations! Thanks so much! kate -- Kate Pohjola Andrade <https://namedrop.io/katepohjolaandrade> (she/her/hers) Woodlands Library Cooperative <https://woodlands.lib.mi.us> 517-629-9460 / 586-801-0725 - cell/text *No Reservation Recommendations* <https://nrr.ninja>: your source for colleague-approved vendors! Schoenherr was also very well known as a wildlife artist and children's book illustrator, with over forty books to his credit. Most of his black-and-white illustration work used the scratchboard technique, and he was long known as the only commercial artist who specialized in it. His paintings were often egg tempera, another unusual medium. Schoenherr also completed paintings for NASA. Schoenherr's knowledge of zoology was very useful in creating alien creatures. Isle Royale is considered one of the most remote National Parks and is located off the coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in the waters of Lake Superior. The book tells the story of Isle Royale’s most popular four-legged creatures, the moose and the wolves. /The Big Island /is a classic read for any budding young nature enthusiast and explores the concept of a balanced ecosystem. With an effective blend of local history and a love of nature, Julian May writes about how the moose and wolves came to live on the island. She also tells about how people first came to the island and about the time period that Isle Royale became a National Park. The book delves into the park rangers’ various methods of intervention on behalf of the overcrowded and starving moose population. It also tells how the best solution was found when wolves arrived on the island naturally to establish a balanced environment. The Big Island provides readers of all ages some valuable insight into the predator-prey relationship of the moose and wolves of the island and their roles in the great circle of life. Stunningly realistic illustrations of moose, wolves, and other island wildlife cover the pages of this exceptional book". -- read the full review by Hannah Brinza <https://UPPAA.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b1016c5c910959a236f2ff48f&i…>, /U.P. Cairns & Beacons: If you are interested in an easy, high-quality, low-cost programming series – this is it. This can be a turnkey programming series with topical presentations and discussions that you can provide for your patrons with minimal work and minimal cost. None of us have enough time or money to do all the awesome ideas we have for programming; however, technology allows us to collaborate in ways that will provide better programming with a smaller strain on our finite resources. All you will need is a room that can host a virtual meeting and a staff member to run it. We will have grant money to help with marketing and equipment, if necessary. Cairns & Beacons is an eight-part lecture/discussion series that examines several complex topics that surfaced during covid and its aftermath and that are now being explored in the public arena, including reimagining the economy, what’s ahead for both political parties, and whether today’s Supreme Court is different from or like past Courts. The series takes no political position. Our goal is to provide information fairly --identifying differing points of view without bias. Presenters will appear via Zoom to a live audience gathered at a library. Multiple libraries can have their own groups experiencing and *interacting* with the presenter. This actually works. Our Shifting Landscapes series tested this, and we had groups from 7 to 40+ people show up live for virtual presentations. A week later, discussion sessions will bring the groups together again to discuss the topic of the presentation in a novel way. The discussions will begin with artwork (a poem, a painting, a short play…) related to the presentation topic. The goal is to give participants a fresh perspective and a common starting point to root the discussion. Carins & Beacons runs from September 25th through March 18th. I’m happy to provide more details if you are interested. We have one grant application into Michigan Humanitites and will be sending another one into Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC). We are looking to have commitments from a few participating libraries before we submit the MACC grant. If you’re interested, let me know soon. Thomas Trahey
