Hello Friends, In May, 2018, Woodlands Library Cooperative’s Continuing Education Committee offered a workshop titled, “The care and feeding of our library buildings.” Discussion continued that fall at luncheon during the MLA annual conference, about how public libraries could better share facilities-related information. As it often happens, the discussion grew into the larger issue of how libraries can share a wide variety of vendor information with each other without redundancy, and the concept on which we settled was to offer a moderated website where directors can provide contact information for companies with whom they’ve had a positive experience. Thus “*No Reservation Recommendations*” (NRR) was born! Cairns & Beacons: If you are interested in an easy, high-quality, low-cost programming series – this is it. This can be a turnkey programming series with topical presentations and discussions that you can provide for your patrons with minimal work and minimal cost. None of us have enough time or money to do all the awesome ideas we have for programming; however, technology allows us to collaborate in ways that will provide better programming with a smaller strain on our finite resources. All you will need is a room that can host a virtual meeting and a staff member to run it. We will have grant money to help with marketing and equipment, if necessary. Cairns & Beacons is an eight-part lecture/discussion series that examines several complex topics that surfaced during covid and its aftermath and that are now being explored in the public arena, including reimagining the economy, what’s ahead for both political parties, and whether today’s Supreme Court is different from or like past Courts. The series takes no political position. Our goal is to provide information fairly --identifying differing points of view without bias. Presenters will appear via Zoom to a live audience gathered at a library. Multiple libraries can have their own groups experiencing and *interacting* with the presenter. This actually works. Our Shifting Landscapes series tested this, and we had groups from 7 to 40+ people show up live for virtual presentations. A week later, discussion sessions will bring the groups together again to discuss the topic of the presentation in a novel way. The discussions will begin with artwork (a poem, a painting, a short play…) related to the presentation topic. The goal is to give participants a fresh perspective and a common starting point to root the discussion. Carins & Beacons runs from September 25th through March 18th. I’m happy to provide more details if you are interested. We have one grant application into Michigan Humanitites and will be sending another one into Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC). Raised in Detroit and a graduate of Communications and Media Arts High School in Detroit, Comer received bachelor's degrees in English and in Spanish with an emphasis on Latin American Culture from the University of Michigan. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Callaloo, and a translation fellowship by U.S. Poets in Mexico. Comer's writing received the Vera Myer Strube Award in poetry. Comer is the winner of Crab Orchard Review's 2014 Richard Peterson Poetry Prize. In 2016, she completed a master's degree in African American Literature from the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies and a Master's of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from the English Department at Indiana University. She is a 2019 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow. Over the years, Comer has been dedicated to youth development by serving as a writer-in-residence in Detroit Public Schools Community District and community centers. She has also worked in collaboration with organizations, including YArts and InsideOut Literary Arts Projects. Ms. Comer served as a curriculum developer and youth curriculum consultant for various arts organizations and in 2018 received the William Wiggins Award for Outstanding Teaching at Indiana University. Comer's poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, The Journal of Pan African Studies, Sycamore Review, and Third Coast. She is the author of American Family: Syndrome (Finishing Line Press) and Tapping Out (Northwestern University Press), which was awarded the 2020 Society of Midland Authors Award and the 2020 Julie Suk Award. Comer is currently the director of Allied Media Projects Seeds Program and the co-director of Detroit Lit, a program dedicated to providing reading and professional development opportunities to narrative makers of color in Detroit. Guest held the title of Poet Laureate of the state of Michigan from 1952 until his death in 1959. Will Carleton (1847-1912) is sometimes referred to as the first Poet Laureate of Michigan. Public Act 51 of 1919 designated October 21 of each year as "Carleton Day" in memory of "Michigan's pioneer poet." Passing along some exciting and happy news from MLA! We are so proud to share that MLA has won the 2023 Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award! Shout out and thank you to the MLA Intellectual Freedom Taskforce<https://www.milibraries.org/committees-work-groups> for all the work they put in to make this possible and thank you to all our engaged members and advocates who are standing up for the right to read! The ALA Intellectual Freedom Roundtable’s Coalition Building Committee selected the Michigan Library Association (MLA), as this year’s recipient of the Gerald Hodges Intellectual Freedom Chapter Relations Award. This $1,000 award recognizes work on intellectual freedom, patron confidentiality, and anti-censorship efforts. The selection committee commends the association’s impressive work on the MI Right to Read coalition, Intellectual Freedom Toolkit, intellectual freedom messaging center, advocacy resource fund, and education programs. It’s clear that the MLA is a strong defender of the right to read, and the resources it makes available benefit Michigan libraries and can serve as a model for other state associations. We are fortunate to have such organizations leading the fight against censorship.
