The survey should take about 25 minutes to complete. Purpose: By responding to this survey, you are contributing to the first known sampling of public library card access trends across the United States. The survey collects data about your library's cardholder signup process for adults and children/teenagers, as well as how these policies and procedures are revised. Brooklyn Public Library will share findings in a report issued to the field in spring 2024; and will convene a working group next summer to publish a framework for library leaders of best practices around cardholder access. Ensure YOUR library is represented! [Take the Survey] Survey Audience: The survey is intended for anyone who currently works or recently worked (within the past 12 months) at a public library in the United States and who is familiar with their library's cardholder signup process. Your personal information will be kept confidential. Multiple organizations are distributing this survey; therefore, you may also receive an invitation to participate elsewhere, or you may see a link for this survey in a library publication or forum. We ask that individuals take this Library Card Access Survey only once (however we can accept responses from multiple individuals on behalf of the same library). Participants may provide their name and email address to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $25 (USD) gift card from Giftogram, which allows recipients to select from a list of retailers. One hundred (100) gift cards will be issued. Questions? If you have questions about this project, please contact Amy Mikel, Director of Customer Experience at Brooklyn Public Library, at amikel(a)bklynlibrary.org<http://arsl.memberclicks.net/message2/link/2ef6f4c0-5a04-4a4d-b2f7-ed66ef2b…>. Chief Executive Officer – Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (MD) The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System<https://www.pgcmls.info/> (PGCMLS) Board of Library Trustees seeks a Chief Executive Officer<https://bradburymiller.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/PGCMLS-CEO-Position-D…>, a strong advocate who, through effective leadership, will sustain the library system’s progress toward becoming one of the nation’s best libraries. PGCMLS serves approximately 955,300 residents from 19 branch locations with a $38 million budget and 312 FTE, roughly 85% of whom are members of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO. Approximately 72% of its budget comes from the county and 23% from the Maryland State government. In FY 2022, PGCMLS had 578,405 active borrowers, 98,391 people attending 5,160 free programs, and circulated 3 million items, ranking it among the highest circulating libraries in Maryland. Since 2020, the PGCMLS Foundation has also raised over $2 million to strengthen the role the library plays in the communities it serves, including support for the creation of five resource labs focused on creative design, media production, entrepreneurship, workforce development, and social justice education. PGCMLS is committed to innovation, and it received the Urban Libraries Council’s 2021 Top Innovator Award for its workforce and community development initiatives. The library has fostered a collaborative culture, both internally and with other community stakeholders, and it enjoys strong support and goodwill from its patrons. The ideal CEO will bring extraordinary passion, innovation, and a demonstrated commitment to a diverse, multicultural, and engaged community of patrons and active partners. Prince George’s County, the second largest in Maryland, is vibrant and growing with 27 municipalities. It is home to seven colleges and universities, including the University of Maryland, Bowie State University, and Prince George’s Community College. Prince George’s County is also home to some of the region’s top attractions. Residents and visitors enjoy the National Harbor on the Potomac, FedEx Field—home of the NFL Washington Commanders, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, Show Place Arena, a vibrant Hyattsville Arts Corridor, and the Publick Playhouse. In addition to local historical, cultural, and recreational amenities, you will find yourself minutes from downtown Washington, D.C., historic Annapolis, and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Responsibilities: The CEO reports to the Board of Trustees and oversees a nationally recognized library system. This position provides overall strategic and operational leadership with full responsibility for, but not limited to, the following areas: personnel and fiscal management; marketing, advocacy, and communications; fundraising and development; emergent technologies; facilities; and external partnership development through engagement and collaboration with key stakeholder groups. Valuing transparency, trust, and collegiality, the CEO will lead a large, complex, and innovative organization that is ready for a leader to tap into the potential of its dedicated and talented people. Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program and five years of progressively responsible management experience in a complex, professional organization. Additional skills include political acumen, strong communication skills, the ability to think and plan strategically, the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders and demonstrated proficiency in fiscal management. Experience in a public library with multiple locations, reporting to a governing board, embracing a multicultural environment, and collective bargaining experience are desired qualifications. Compensation: The hiring salary range is $170,000 – $210,000 (with placement negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications) and an excellent fringe benefits package. Solar Eclipse: First of two coming Saturday, Oct 14, 2023
by Lancaster, Cathy (MDE) 02 Oct '23

02 Oct '23

SEAL: Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries<https://www.starnetlibraries.org/about/our-projects/solar-eclipse-activitie…> As we get closer to the Annular Eclipse on Oct. 14, more and more librarians are getting ready to distribute the send-home handouts about this eclipse, which are pages 28 and 29 of the booklet that goes with the glasses. (See: http://bit.ly/eclipsesforlibraries<https://www.starnetlibraries.org/2020/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/SEAL-bookl…> ) That same handout in Spanish is on pp. 32 & 33. Note that before you duplicate that page, you are supposed to fill in the times of the eclipse in your location. You can find that by going to this website and putting in the name of your town: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2023-october-14 Where it says "eclipse maximum" you may want to put in not just the time, but the % of the Sun's diameter that will be covered by the Moon, which the website gives you as the eclipse magnitude. So, if they say the magnitude is 0.479, that means just about 48% of the Sun's diameter will be covered up. Total Solar Eclipse coming on Monday, April 8, 2024. Michigan will see it at 90% totality! So, if you are giving out glasses in October, remind folks to store them safely and avoid scratching or bending, so they will be reusable in April. Encourage families to share a pair of glasses, as the eclipses last long enough to pass a pair around. NOTE ABOUT SELLING FREE GLASSES: By the rules established by the Moore Foundation, libraries may not sell the glasses they receive through this project. However, many libraries are likely to find that the local demand for glasses far outstrips their free supply, especially if they get word out via the local media. In that case, libraries can try to order more glasses at bulk rates and then sell them for a reasonable fee (such as $2 or 3 each.) Profits could go to your Friends of the Library or similar group. For your free glasses, we recommend only providing them during eclipse programs, like those described above, to make sure the supply lasts. This project is funded by generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation through Grant Agreement 10756 to the Space Science Institute. Additional funding has been provided by NASA Science Mission Directorate through a supplement to the NASA@ My Library program. Reminder, LM has NASA @ My Library and SEAL kits<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/libraries/kitkeeper> available to support library programming around Space Science! Canva share for Banned Books Week
by Katie Rothley 29 Sep '23

29 Sep '23

Hi all, I know it's pretty late in the day now but... I created 11 features of individual challenged or banned book titles for Banned Books Week in the Instagram story format that we are going to use next week, and wanted to share with you (you can simultaneously use this for Facebook stories and schedule them at the same time in Business Suite's Content Planning area if you like). I used a free header from ALA's website - the "Let Freedom Read" graphic. Our posts were admin approved ahead of time, so make sure to check-in with yours before you post, just in case. Please make a copy first before you make any edits so that other libraries can also take the templates to use and edit as they see fit: Banned Books Week Canva file for stories <https://www.canva.com/design/DAFv3AKy8Ws/dkJvXyc9DNiu9piwTMMMYQ/edit?utm_co…> They do not have our branding on them, just ALA's. I cross-posted to our consortium, so if there are other libraries on Michlib that are a part of other consortium's and want to share, feel welcome to. Have a great weekend! -- Katie Rothley, MLIS Marketing & Public Relations Librarian Northville District Library 212 West Cady Street Northville, MI 48167 (248) 349-3020 <callto:(248)+349-3020> ext. 221 https://northvillelibrary.org My working day may not be your working day. Please do not feel obligated to reply to this email outside of your normal working hours.
