*Please excuse cross postings:* *POSITION*: *Library Director * *Swanton Public Library *is a school district library serving residents in both Fulton and Lucas Counties, with an annual budget of about $700,000, with revenue from both state funding and a local property tax levy. The Director reports to a 7-member Board of Trustees. *DUTIES*: The Director is responsible for all aspects of library services and works with the Board of Trustees to determine the strategic direction and policies for the library. The Director serves as a highly visible leader within the library, its service area and the library community, leading a dedicated, hard-working and independent staff of 5 full-time and 4 part-time employees. The Director is to ensure courteous, prompt, and comprehensive service to all library patrons in a cost-effective manner consistent with library policies. *QUALIFICATIONS*: The candidate should possess excellent management, public relations, budget, facility and communication skills and believe that the patrons and the staff are the most important assets to the Library. ● ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science with 3 or more years of postgraduate experience in a public library including administrative and supervisory experience preferred ● Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral form. ● Ability to effectively use automated library systems, computers, and other library technologies. ● Effective interpersonal skills consisting of creative and diplomatic management abilities. ● Community engagement and development experience. *COMPENSATION*: Salary range of $50,000-$62,000. Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Looking for a book

Hello Library World! I would like to ask for your help for one of our patrons. She is looking to find the name of a book about a baby owl named Oliver. When he was learning to fly, he got lost in the woods. A line from the book that she remembers is "The moon came up and Oliver shivered". She thinks it is circa 1943 or 1944. I haven't been able to find anything about a book that old with the character she is looking for. Any suggestions would be appreciated. MeL Minute: MiSTEM Network Utilizes AtoZdatabases Data

She shared with me that the MiSTEM Network<https://www.michigan.gov/leo/boards-comms-councils/mistem> had been using data from AtoZdatabases<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=at…>, an eResource in the Michigan eLibrary<https://mel.org/welcome> (MeL), to build a story map where students with interests in a specific industry could go to learn about internships, apprenticeships, and jobs in their region of the state. Diane and I reconnected a few weeks ago, and I asked about the project. A lot has happened in two years! The MiSTEM Network’s Greater West Michigan Region has successfully completed the pilot<https://www.gvsu.edu/mistem/gismap/> and is now scaling the project up to the entire state. Through a partnership with Grand Valley State University, faculty serve as data coaches and undergrad students participate in internships learning valuable skills like team building, communication, problem solving, and critical thinking that help to prepare them as they enter the workforce. The goal of the Career Exploration StoryMap is to help educators and students make more real-world career connections in their communities as well as provide a visual resource for students to locate businesses in STEM fields that offer high-wage and high-demand jobs. In addition to items such as apprenticeships and internships, the map can be viewed by individual industry clusters like agriculture, construction, energy, finance, healthcare, IT, manufacturing, and transportation. Although the map is very user friendly, the website does include directions<https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/0f0aef7f647f462da7a70c0fdb6bbffe>. The MiSTEM StoryMap aggregates data available from AtoZdatabases in MeL and uses it to build a tool that will help students and adult community members quickly filter, sort, and analyze data in STEM industries by county. Essentially, the interactive map answers the following questions: * Where are the businesses in my community? * What industry has the most growth? * What are the hot jobs in my area? * What growth do businesses project? The information presented not only communicates the physical locations of business partners and industry clusters in Michigan, but it also helps students identify trends, patterns and opportunities to make better career decisions, which aligns with the guidelines in the Michigan Career Development Model<https://www.michigan.gov/mde/-/media/Project/Websites/mde/CTE/Tool-kits/MI_…>. The MiSTEM StoryMap can also assist adults in preparing for higher education, credentialing, and the workforce. Whether it’s genealogy research, test preparation, accessing eBooks, finding the perfect article, or the ability to aggregate data, the eResources in MeL provide much support to all Michiganders. JOB TITLE: Youth Services Librarian REPORTS TO: Community Relations Manager CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt; Union position HOURS: Full-Time (40 hours per week) Deadline: Until Filled Salary: $25.39/hr. The Genesee District Library is seeking a full-time, energetic, team-oriented, tech savvy Youth Services Librarian with a strong commitment to public service. Ideal candidate is passionate about serving children, teens, families, and educators. Responsible for programming and community outreach from birth to teens, fostering partnerships and leading literacy efforts in Genesee County. The Genesee District Library is a Class VI system of 19 libraries in Genesee County, and the third largest library system in Michigan. Help us inspire our youth to become lifelong learners. Responsibilities include: Evaluates program needs and assists in carrying out services district-wide for children and young adults. Participates in the scheduling and training of outside story time providers. Provides youth services information via various digital platforms. Partners with area schools and other agencies to promote collections and services offered to children and young adults. Builds strong community bonds by working with community leaders. Contributes to social media with well written, grammatically correct posts. Stays current in new library services and trends in youth services through reading, seminars, workshops, webinars, and conferences. Routinely seeks out and identifies sources for grant funding opportunities. Prepares well written and documented grant proposals specific to children and youth services. Attends outreach events in schools and community. Requirements for the position include: Master's degree in library or information science from an American Library Association accredited library school. A minimum of a Level 2 certification by the Library of Michigan within ninety (90) days of hire. One year of professional experience in a library. Must enjoy working with children while creating a high-quality experience for the children, parents, or guardians. Strong proficiency with electronic databases, Microsoft Office applications, social networking sites and mobile technology. Ability to get along with diverse personalities and populations. Ability to work as a team or independently within a fast-paced environment. Will be required to: Work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, around programs, events and community outreach. Work Environment: The location of the work site is primarily the GDL Headquarters location. Significant travel throughout the district to attend or conduct library programs and other literacy events. The location will vary between branches of the Genesee District Library System, and the schedule will vary according to the needs of the public and the GDL System. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and vehicle for use on company business. Successful completion of a background check. We have a lot of people that come through SIS that write poetry, short stories, books, songs, etc. We thought that it would be fun to host a SIS Creatives event where we could share our work together.
