amazon/Overdrive
by Benzie Shores District Library 13 Aug '13

13 Aug '13

According to the amazon techies, there is a nationwide problem with Overdrive downloads for all public libraries through amazon. There is no solution at this time but they hope to have it figured out, possibly, today. It has been going on all weekend, so I imagine today will be interesting with LOTS of Overdrive questions. It is download mess. Good Luck. -- Cathy Carter Benzie Shores District Library P.O. Box 631 630 Main St. Frankfort, Mi 49635 231-352-4671 bsdl(a)benzieshoreslibrary.org

Hello Michigan library staff interested in E-rate and proposed changes: Attached is a summary of the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) from the FCC regarding E-rate. The American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) is working to make sure libraries are well represented in this re-consideration of E-rate. If you have comments, you can send them to ALA-OITP or to us here at the Library of Michigan to submit on your behalf. [cid:image001.jpg@01CE9813.C5983410] Sheryl L. thanks!
by Melissa Malcolm 12 Aug '13

12 Aug '13

Hello all-- I received many responses to my request for information about the composition of library board committees. Though I do attend all of the committee meetings as the staff rep, agenda creator and minute taker, other staff members have attended as well and that is creating some problems. As staff membership is not included in the board by-laws, I'll request that we follow those by-laws and see what happens. I believe I'll get some push back but for the health of the institution, the change is needed. I appreciate all your advice, support and wisdom. melissa -- Melissa A. Hello, how do you handle persons wanting to put up a table to gather names on a very controversial subject either inside or outside of the library??? We are having a backyard where we sell table space for all kinds of vendors and they want to purchase space. We have nothing in our policies. Thanks, for your help. Shirley Roos Holly Township

Coupon Exchange Etiquette
by Erin Schmndt 12 Aug '13

12 Aug '13

(Please excuse cross postings) Hoping for suggestions on a particular situation. We have hosted a coupon exchange at the library for years, possibly decades. We have a table with several boxes where people can donate their unused coupons, go through the ones that have been donated and also donated out of date coupons for the military. We also add all the coupons that come in the papers the library subscribes to, and often, residents drop envelopes of unused coupons in the drop box. Recently, we have had several people waiting in line when we open on Monday morning to get to the coupons first. One woman, if she is the first through the door, will grab the entire stack of fresh weekend coupons, stuff them in her bag and take off. The other patrons who were waiting are quite angry about this. We've offered this casual service for years and this is the first problem we've had. Does anyone else offer this service? Do you have a suggestion on how to offer the Monday morning coupons equitably? Erin Schmändt, MLIS Library Director River Rapids District Library 227 E. composition of library board committees
by Melissa Malcolm 12 Aug '13

12 Aug '13

Hi all-- Happy Friday! I have a question about board committees. Those here at Lapeer have traditionally had a staff member on them and currently, that process is causing some headaches. For me. Is staff involvement in a board committee--personnel, facilities--usual, or is the staff usually represented by the library director only? Thank you for your input. melissa -- Melissa A.
