Build Libraries and not Shelters
by Michael McGuire 23 Oct '13

23 Oct '13

Heard recently on NPR (paraphrased): For disaster response, build libraries and not shelters. People would rather go to libraries. I couldn’t find the recent story, but this story popped up in my search. For Disaster Preparedness: Pack A Library Card? http://www.npr.org/2013/08/12/210541233/for-disasters-pack-a-first-aid-kit-… Also: Ports in a Storm: The Library as Community Disaster Recovery Center http://www.slideshare.net/mpstricker/ports-in-a-storm-the-library-as The problem: It's never happened here. True enough, but also true in most every other place there's a major disaster. Michael D. McGuire Grand Rapids, MI mdmcguire(a)yahoo.com

My family and I had a trip visiting (Manila,Philippines), everything was going on fine until last night when we got attacked by some unknown gunmen. All our money, phones and credit cards was stolen away including some valuable items, It was a terrible experience but the good thing is they didn't hurt anyone or made away with our passports. We have reported the incident to the local authorities and the consulate but their response was too casual, we were ask to come back in 2weeks time for investigations to be made proper,But the truth is we can't wait till then as we have just got our return flight booked and is leaving in few hours from now but presently having problems sorting out our bills here and also getting a cab down to the airport, Right now we're financially strapped due to the unexpected robbery attack, Wondering if you can help us with a quick loan to sort our bills and get back home. All we need is ($2,650.00 USD) or anything you can afford, I promise to refund you in full as soon as I return hopefully tomorrow or next. write back now to let me know what you can do. Letters about Literature program announcement
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 23 Oct '13

23 Oct '13

A reminder about the Letters about Literature program and the deadlines. Letters from teens in grades 9-12 are due Dec. 10th and letters from children in grades 4-6 and 7-8 are due January 10th. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2014 Letters about Literature program. We are again hosting this national program for Michigan. The Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program is a national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have sent a letter and a sample entry form to libraries and schools. The 2014 letters will be due in two waves, which is new this year. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 10, 2013 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 10, 2014. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2014. You can find more information about the national program at www.read.gov/letters/<http://www.read.gov/letters/> and the Michigan program at www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices<http://www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices>.
