TLN Adult Services Fall Workshop

This message is being sent to multiple lists; please excuse duplication. The annual TLN Adult Services Fall Workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 2, from 9am-1pm at the Novi Public Library. The theme for the workshop is "Hello? Do You Know We're Here? Making Your Library's Presence Felt in Your Community." We know that our libraries have so much to offer, but how do we get the word out? This workshop will give strategies for promotion and partnerships that will help community members to view the library as relevant and valuable. The workshop speakers are: - Laurie Golden (Canton Public Library) will share tips for developing strong partnerships in the community. Canton Public Library received the 2013 LibraryAware Community Award for its work in connecting with the community. Discover ways to create a library that is truly valued by the community. - Bill Harmer and Anna Cangialosi (Chelsea District Library) will discuss ways to engage the community to build relationships. The library's highly visible "Geek the Library" campaign was the talk of the town, in a good way! Learn how community engagement can reap benefits for the library. - Kelly Rembert Ireland (Southfield Public Library) will provide tips and tricks to market the library and its programs to your community on a low to zero budget. Find out which types of marketing will work best for you and your library. The workshop registration fee is $15 for TLN library members, $20 for non-TLN library members and $10 for library science students. A registration form is attached. Questions? ALA Midwinter 2014: Become a consultant, design an online course, transform your leadership

While summer has just ended and nobody *really* wants to be thinking about ==WINTER== just yet, I have some news that's going to get you psyched up for winter-specifically, the 2014 ALA Midwinter Meeting in Philadelphia. ASCLA-the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agenci <http://www.ala.org/ascla> es-is offering four outstanding learning events in Philadelphia. We've got day-long workshops focused on online course design, successful leadership and a crash course in becoming a library consultant! We've also scheduled a networking lunch-and-learn for library consultants. Archival Consultant or Archival Student for Historical Consortium Project

The Oakland County Historical Resources Consortium is seeking an archival consultant or archival student to conduct Phase 2 of a comprehensive assessment and to implement the digitization priority action plan of the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society's Research Library Collection. The consultant will be expected to work collaboratively with both Consortium and Society Staff. The final written status report regarding work completed will be submitted to the Consortium's Board of Directors and to the Pioneer Society in both paper and electronic formats. The goals of this project are to: . Preserve the collection's most valuable items . Make the collection more accessible to the public through the Oakland County Historical Resources Consortium's website and database Duties: . Implement three of the prioritized "Top Preservation Action Items Recommended to OCHR" items 1-8, as time allows, of the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society's Research Library . Upload photos that have already been digitized . Upload obituaries that have already been scanned . Upload maps (as project time allows) Qualifications: . Masters degree or enrollment in an ALA accredited library science program with an archival administration component . Demonstrated knowledge of archival procedures in records appraisal and preservation . Familiarity with digitization process . Familiarity with uploading to website process . Please forward to anyone that you feel could benefit from attending this program either in person or online via streaming video! *************************************************************************************************** MCLS is pleased to announce that one month from today, October 4, 2013, Lisa Carlucci Thomas, 2010 Library Journal Mover and Shaker, 2009 ALA Emerging Leader and Director of the library and creative services firm Design Think Do, will present the keynote address at our annual meeting which will be held at the Marten House Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. Viewing by streaming video will also be available for those who cannot travel to Indianapolis. Our theme for the day is Open Spaces, Open Data, Open Access: Transforming Today’s Libraries. Our morning kick-off session begins at 10 AM with a keynote address from Carlucci Thomas titled “Open Spaces, Open Data, Open Access: Transforming Today’s Libraries”. Transformation requires trailblazing and tenacity. Transformative culture fosters engagement and strategic development, and changes libraries from the inside out. Creative partnerships promote reciprocal learning, enhance services, and spark opportunities; and entrepreneurial methods offer advantages for libraries evaluating and adapting current practices. From library places and programs, to online collections and communities, today’s libraries are breaking barriers and setting new standards. Next will be a panel discussion featuring three mid-western public libraries which have developed innovative uses of their space. Orvella Fields from The Indianapolis Public Library will talk about their “Learning Curve”; a high-tech, high energy, hands-on information environment designed for children. Joining Ms. Fields will be Steve Teeri, Conductor at the Detroit Public Library’s “HYPE” Makerspace. The goal of HYPE is to build teens who are creative, innovative citizens who make, not just consume. Completing the panel will be CJ Lynce, Manager at the Cleveland Public Library’s “TechCentral”; an innovative technology and learning center which beyond computer in Linux, Mac and Windows PCs offers 3D printing, Mycloud, a Tech Toybox and collaborative work areas where patrons can check-out-a-trainer to assist. Following lunch, we will hear from Ted Fons, Executive Director, Data Services and WorldCat Quality Management at OCLC as he presents on the WorldShare Management Service. Following, David Lewis, Dean of the IUPUI University Library and Indiana University Assistant Vice President of Digital Scholarly Communications will speak on the Inevitability of Open Access. Mr. Lewis has written over 40 articles and book chapters on topics ranging from reference services and library management to scholarly communication. Free micro-form reader

Hello All, Van Buren District Library has a micro-form reader to share. "Free to a good home." It is an Indus Class 4601, model 11 and I believe it can be used to view standard fiche, 16/35mm roll films, aperture cards, and micro-jackets. It is 23 inches high; the platen/film holder is 19 1/2 inches; and the screen is 11 1/4 inches wide. It's a fairly compact unit, compared to some. This position requires a Bachelor's degree, customer service experience (preferably library experience), basic computer skills, and a flexible, friendly, approachable and enthusiastic manner with public and staff. Job duties include staffing the Circulation Desk, processing interlibrary loans, and processing and cataloging library materials. Advanced E-rate Training - October 29

The 2013 Advanced E-rate Training has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 29, 2013. The all-day workshop will be held at the Library of Michigan. Registration is now open. Linda Schatz will lead the workshop which will cover any updates provided by the SLD during their Fall Training Workshops. She will also focus on procurement and the Form 471 along with other information needed to submit an application during the application window. Provided that the online Form 470 and 471 Training site is available, we will also review how to complete and file the Form 470 and the Form 471 online. This workshop will be a follow up to the Beginners E-rate Workshop held in June and will focus on higher-level issues that are encountered during the application and review processes. Beginners are also welcome but should review the SLD web site<http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/www.usac.org/sl/> before attending to familiarize themselves with the terminology and the application processes.
