If you've ever wanted to be part of an exciting endeavor, here's your chance to review entries for the Write Michigan Short Story Contest. * Who: Staff from Kent District Library, Capital Area District Library, Pooh's Corner and Schuler Books & Music, along with many other library friends and book discussion groups! * What: Write Michigan Short Story contest is taking entries for all ages from people who live in Michigan and awarding cash prizes to the winners. Volunteer reviewers are needed to narrow the stories to 10 semi-finalists per category. * Where: Submissions will be available for review online. Volunteers will be given a login. * When: Reading/Reviewing will take place on staff's own time from December 1, 2013 - January 3, 2014 * How: Volunteers are asked to read entries in one of three categories (adult-over 18, teen-12 - 17, youth-under 11). Each volunteers will read 10-13 stories total. Each story will be read by two volunteers. We have asked authors not to include their name on their PDF entry so they should be anonymous to you. We do ask that if volunteers have entered the contest or have family members who did, they please volunteer to review the other contest categories. Under the grant, the DPLA will collaborate with its service “hubs”—regional digital library partners located in states and regions in the United States—to build curricular resources and implement hands-on training programs that develop digital skills and capacity within the staffs of public libraries. “From its inception, the Digital Public Library of America has partnered with libraries across America to help bring their riches to the country and the world,” said Dan Cohen, DPLA’s Executive Director. “With this generous grant from the Gates Foundation, we can extend this partnership to help local libraries and librarians take full advantage of what digital technology has to offer.” As part of the new program, current librarians and library volunteers around the country will work with the DPLA to acquire, use, and sustain new digital skills using DPLA’s open materials and services, such as metadata creation, digitization, and virtual exhibition curation. Public librarians will receive the training required to produce digitized materials and curate these into virtual exhibitions<http://us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e1490d1305c4b651f3ad0ace4&id=58c25…>. The DPLA will in turn create a professional development webspace on its site to distribute and maintain the curricular and the curatorial materials designed as part of the pilot, making its teaching modules and workshop templates open and free to all. The public libraries that participate in this pilot program will foster a greater understanding of local historical and cultural content, directing their communities to curated materials as well as a mass of relevant items in the DPLA and its associated collections. These libraries will have the opportunity to associate professional metadata with their collections, providing the ability to share their local heritage globally via the DPLA's portal and platform. The Digital Public Library of America sees this initiative as an important step in its nascent DPLA Local program, which aims to tailor DPLA’s infrastructure for customized use in communities across the United States. Nov 7 is the next MI PR Group meeting

Hi, The MI PR Group's next meeting will be on Thursday, November 7th from 10am - 12pm at the Novi Public Library ( http://www.novilibrary.org/) . Our main discussion will be on methods of communication. Should we put all of our effort into social media, should we scale back on printed flyers, are e-newsletter effective, etc. Plus a chance to go around the table with local updates to gain great ideas from each other. The MI PR Group is designed as an informal PR group to work together and share our successes, learn from our non-successes and put our brains together to try and tackle issues and help all of our libraries. "InfoTrac" has been re-added to the Junior Edition, Newsstand and Student Edition databases on the MeL databases page ( http://mel.org/index.php?P=SPT--BrowseResourcesDatabases&ParentId=617) The term "Collection" has been re-added to the Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine & Psychology databases on MeL's Heath & Wellness Gateway. The primary responsibility is to provide reference and readers’ advisory services to patrons at the public service desks at the Southfield Public Library. REQUIREMENT: An A.L.A. accredited MLS degree is required. Experience providing readers’ advisory and reference services for both adults and children in a public library setting is preferred. SCHEDULE: Substitute librarians work a varied schedule with an emphasis on weekend hours. The schedule is flexible and posted several months in advance. SALARY: The starting salary is $15.00 per hour with no benefits.
