BTBL seeking public libraries as demo sites
by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LARA) 04 Aug '14

04 Aug '14

Good Morning, As a part of the Braille and Talking Book Library's outreach efforts, I am attempting to gain more involvement from public libraries across Michigan. We would like to have any (and every!) interested public library become a demo site. Demo sites will be issued a digital talking book machine, a book on cartridge, and will be granted partial access to BARD (our online downloading website) in order to demo to your current patrons who may qualify for our services. Also, we are able to provide training to library staff in person on a case by case basis or via webinar. Currently we have a webinar scheduled on August 21st through the Library of Michigan- to sign up go to: http://www.solutionwhere.com/lom/cw/showcourse.asp?55 As public librarians, you see our potential patrons, their family members, and community center leaders in person on a regular basis-they trust you for their informational needs. We hope by signing up public libraries as demo sites, your staff can work with these patrons to bring awareness to our free service. The Braille and Talking Book Library (BTBL) offers audio books, magazines, and braille titles to patrons with the following disabilities: * Blindness * Visual Disability (Unable to read standard printed materials without special aids other than regular glasses). * Physical Disability (Unable to hold a book or turn the pages as a result of weakened muscle or nerve control due to strokes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, polio, or other physical conditions that impair the use of arms or hands). * DeafBlind * Reading Disability (Organic dysfunction, such as dyslexia, of sufficient severity to prevent reading. IF THIS BOX IS CHECKED, doctors of medicine or osteopathy who may consult with colleagues in associated disciplines must certify). Please email me off-list if your public library is interested in becoming a demo site, and I will provide more details. You can also visit our website at: www.michigan.gov/btbl<http://www.michigan.gov/btbl> to learn more. Donor Recognition
by Linda K. Neely 02 Aug '14

02 Aug '14

Hello, We are up and running with the Bath Township Library Center ( http://www.bathtownship.us/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=506… ) which is not legally established yet, but as a Township Department is operating like a public library thanks largely to many donations. We have received shelving and furnishing donations (from other libraries), materials donations (from both other libraries and from individuals), and financial donations from individuals. We would like to recognize people and institutions who have made significant contributions on a donor tree or wall. We have considered financial brackets ($500-$1,000, etc. ) but it is a bit difficult to fit used books into financial categories. If your library--esp. Class III or IV libraries-- has a donor recognition system, please share with us how you determine whose name gets recognized. If you have a response you think would help others, respond to the list. Otherwise, please email me at lkneely10(a)frontier.com Thanks, Linda K. Neely Bath Township Library Committee Bath Township Library Center Volunteer (and loving it!!)

Teresa Irish Recommendation
by Katie Bir 01 Aug '14

01 Aug '14

Yet another plug for Teresa K. Irish, "A Thousand Letter's Home". She presented at the Sturgis District Library last night and was WONDERFUL. She had a positive, uplifting message along with war stories and memories from possibly one of the greatest men on earth, her father. Highly recommend that every library treat their community to this gem! :) http://www.athousandlettershome.com/ Katie -- Katie Bir Children's Librarian Sturgis District Library 269-659-7224 Ext 2513 kbir(a)sturgis-library.org
