Letters about Literature judges wanted
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 22 Sep '14

22 Sep '14

The Library of Michigan is looking for judges for the Letters about Literature program. Librarians and teachers familiar with English language arts education, young adult literature, and literary programming for grades 4-12 are welcome. Judging includes reading approximately 50 letters sometime in February or March and one meeting to discuss which letters should be the winner and finalists. Meeting attendance in person is encouraged, but conference call attendance is okay. If you are interested, please contact me and let me know if you are interested in Level I (grades 4-6), Level II (grades 7-8), or Level III (grades 9-12). For more information on the program, see the announcement email below. Thank you! >>>>>>>>>> The Library of Michigan is announcing the 2015 Letters about Literature<http://www.read.gov/letters/> program. We are the Michigan host for this national program from the Library of Congress. It is reading-writing contest that invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives. This program gives students the opportunity to reflect deeply on a book. As readers, they come to understand how literature is more than assignment, but also a life changing experience. Children and teens can participate on their own or as part of a library or class project. We have posted an explanatory letter and a sample entry form at www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices/<http://www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices/>. The 2015 letters will be due in two waves. Level III entries (grades (9-12) have a deadline of December 15, 2014 and Level I and II entries (grades 4-6 and 7-8) have a deadline of January 15, 2015. The state and national winners will be announced in May 2015. You can find more information about the national program at www.read.gov/letters/<http://www.read.gov/letters/> and the Michigan program at www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices<http://www.michigan.gov/youthlibraryservices>. by White, Shannon (MDE) 19 Sep '14

19 Sep '14

The Library of Michigan has a strong commitment to early literacy. Not only do we support that commitment with our book programs--Michigan Reads! and Michigan Notable Books--but we have also added a strong collection of early literacy subscription eResources to the Michigan eLibrary. Michigan children being able to read at grade level by 3rd grade is a goal we wholeheartedly support and work to achieve. AWE Digital Learning Solutions as recently approached LM about their 2014 Multi-State Special Group Purchase plan available now through December 15th. Many other state libraries are making this offer known to their libraries as well. Attached you will find an information sheet to assist you with any decision you may make. Software for wireless with login requirements - do you recommend one?
by aldenlib＠torchlake.com 19 Sep '14

19 Sep '14

Hi, My library has recently had two notices of copyright infringement from our internet provider. While I understand from our lawyer that the Library is not liable to the copyright owner under DCMA's Safe Harbor clause, the internet provider has mentioned in its notice that it can drop us as a customer if the illegal downloading continues. To that end, I would like to buy software that requires wireless users to have a library card so that we can identify and possibly suspend an infringer's use of the internet; I believe that the internet provider would be happy with that. If you can recommend this type of product, I'd appreciate your response on or off the listserv. Sue Riegler, Director Alden District Library 231/331-4318 aldenlib(a)torchlake.com

Call for proposals: Advances in Library Administration and Organization
by Elizabeth Martin 19 Sep '14

19 Sep '14

Dear Colleagues, I am passing along a call for proposals. If you have any questions, please contact ALAO Series Editor: Samantha Hines, Missoula College at the University of Montana, samantha.hines(a)umontana.edu<mailto:samantha.hines@umontana.edu> ________________________________________ Beth Martin Head Librarian of Professional Programs & Economics Department Liaison Librarian GVSU Libraries DEV 132A, Steelcase Library 401 W. Fulton Ave. Grand Rapids, MI. 49504 616-331-7344 martelia(a)gvsu.edu<mailto:martelia@gvsu.edu> ***Please excuse the cross-posting*** The Advances in Library Administration and Organization is seeking proposals for their 2015 volume on staffing for the future. The call can be found at http://emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/books/series.htm?id=0732-0671, and is pasted below and attached as well. The call: Libraries are dealing with unprecedented changes on several fronts: technological developments, funding difficulties, and an increasing need to prove themselves to a demanding population. These factors understandably impact library staffing. Looking toward the future, what changes can we expect to see in how libraries are staffed, how staff are trained and continue to learn, and how we will recruit and maintain staff. The 2015 volume of Advances in Library Administration and Organization will focus on the future of library staffing. ALAO offers long-form research, comprehensive discussions of theoretical developments, and in-depth accounts of evidence-based practice in library administration and organization. The series aims to answer the questions, ³How have libraries been managed, and how should they be managed?² It goes beyond a platform for the sharing of research to provide a venue for dialogue across issues, in a way that traditional peer reviewed journals cannot. Through this series, practitioners can glean new approaches in challenging times and collaborate on the exploration of scholarly solutions to professional quandaries. We are currently seeking proposals for the 2015 volume on staffing for the future. If you are interested in being part of this volume, please send a proposal including author details and estimated length of final submission to Samantha.hines(a)umontana.edu<mailto:Samantha.hines@umontana.edu><mailto:Samantha.hines@umontana.edu> by October 17, 2014.
