On the request from Bad Axe on finding a home for book donations: The Library of Michigan recently sent out requests to obtain donations on Michigan history, etc., to replenish their research collection. Here's what they published in the summer newsletter: Material Donations to the Library of MichiganLM4X Summer 2014 http://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/bulletins/c61ad3[9/4/2014 12:41:47 PM] The Library of Michigan seeks donations of printed and published material relevant to the state of Michigan. Given the vast diversity of the state we need the help of residents to help build our collections to their greatest research potential. Please take a moment to view our presentation to get just a small sample of the material and genres we seek for the Library. The Library accepts gifts of material donations at the following address: Library of Michigan Attn: Gift Coordinator 702 W. Kalamazoo St. Lansing, MI 48909 Check out the links below or the library to make sure, but the books on the list seem to be materials that the LOM would be most welcome to receive. https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/lm_2014_lm4x_Summer_46… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsO4ivqh0u4&feature=youtu.be -- Dale Parus, Director Ionia Community Library Phone: (616) 527-3680, ext. 104 E-mail: parusdhpw(a)gmail.com *MLA Legislative Committee member* *--*

National Friends of Libraries Week
by Linda Pierce 01 Oct '14

01 Oct '14

“Winter, spring, summer, or fall, all you have to do is call and I’ll be there, yeah, yeah,/you’ve got a friend.” (James Taylor, “You’ve Got a Friend”) The Friends of Michigan Libraries (FOML) would like to remind Michigan libraries that October 19-25 is *National Friends of Libraries Week*. The national Friends-support organization, United for Libraries, released this announcement: Friends of Libraries groups have their very own national week of celebration! United for Libraries will coordinate the ninth annual National Friends of Libraries Week Oct. 19-25, 2014. The celebration offers a two-fold opportunity to celebrate Friends. Use the time to creatively promote your group in the community, to raise awareness, and to promote membership. This is also an excellent opportunity for your library and Board of Trustees to recognize the Friends for their help and support of the library. There are PR and Marketing Materials (including a sample press release that can be customized for your library/Friends group). Consultant needed
by Sylvia Merz 01 Oct '14

01 Oct '14

Hello everyone. My Board has asked me to try to locate a 'consultant' who can take a look at our operational staffing needs from a standpoint of use of volunteers vs paid staff at the circulation desk. We currently use only volunteers to staff our circulation desk, and that is becoming increasingly difficult because not only because of the technical aspects of the service, but with the detailed knowledge required. So I am proposing an additional paid staff person who would be called a Circulation Clerk. The Board wonders if there is such a consultant who could outline the merits/benefits of having a paid staff, not replacing the volunteers, but rather supervising them, while being the primary contact with our patrons at the front desk. Does anyone know of such an animal out there? Appreciate your insights. . Sylvia Merz, Director Leland Township Library 203 E. Cedar St., P.O. Harrison Township Public Library Now Live With MAP!
by Jim Flury 01 Oct '14

01 Oct '14

All, I am pleased to announce that Michigan's newest public library, Harrison Township Public Library, is now live with the Michigan Activity Pass (MAP) program at http://michiganactivitypass.info The addition of HTPL means we now have a total of 750 MAP participating venues, consisting of 638 library buildings and 112 cultural partners. While 750 is a nice, round number, if you've been reading our MAP-related messages you have probably come to the conclusion that MAP is not a program to rest on its laurels. Being as that is the case, we are always glad to preach the gospel of MAP to perspective new cultural partners. And of course if any of you are planning to build a new library, or if your district or municipality is adding a branch, we want to know all about that, too in order that we might welcome the new arrival into the family that is MAP. Thank you for your support and promotion of the Michigan Activity Pass program. Sincerely, Jim Flury Jim Flury Technical Services Manager The Library Network 41365 Vincenti Court Novi, MI 48375 248-536-3100 x133 Fax 248-536-3098 jflury(a)tln.lib.mi.us

Sandra Novacek and Border Crossings
by Ceci Marlow 30 Sep '14

30 Sep '14

Sandy Novacek (formerly Scherba and a Cromaine Library Director) was the feature of a two-part fundraiser for our Friends in May. She was absolutely wonderful! Not only is the book "Border Crossings" a compelling story of a child warrior (even in WWII we had them) the story of how the book came to be is an incredible inspirational journey itself. On top of speaking at a brunch and speaking at an evening Czech fest (complete with Bayanina performing eastern European music on accordion), Sandy also shared an exhibit of Charles Novacek's paintings--just a few of the 400 Sandy has, but an amazingly varied collection chosen for our exhibit space. In addition to all the time Sandy shared with us already, she is coming to our Adult Fiction Book Club which is reading the nonfiction "Border Crossings." (Thank you, Sandy!) As you look at planning your upcoming programs, I strongly recommend you consider Sandra Novacek. Sandy's on this list--and at Grosse Pointe Library as well as at 1021 Press and sn(a)charlesnovacekbooks.com. ceci -- Cecilia Ann Marlow Library Director Cromaine District Library 810-632-5200, ext. 105On

REMINDER--BookFlix Webinars in October: Same Dates But Please Note TIME CHANGE!
by BiggThomas, Deb (MDE) 30 Sep '14

30 Sep '14

Hi All--Skip Dyson, Scholastic trainer, will be doing 3 webinar trainings on BookFlix in MeL on October 6-8 all at 4:00 pm. I’ve had requests from elementary school librarians to change the time to 4:00 pm to afford a better timeframe to attend. Each has a separate link/login. I've listed each below, so if you can attend, please note on your calendar which one you'll attend so you will be easily able to login on the scheduled day in October. BookFlix is an eResource that you can use for early literacy development; it's great for storytime--project the book on your whiteboard, big screen so all can see! BookFlix pairs fiction and non-fiction and contains Common Core alignments. Academic Education liaison librarians, this is a great resource to share with your faculty and pre-service teachers! Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks very much! Deb Topic: BookFlix Training Date: MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2014 Time: 4:00 PM EST. Hello again, I have another wonderful program suggestion for you! Last week we had Jerry Hasspacher from the Southeast Michigan Sierra Club come and present for us.
