INALJ meeting, November 25, 6-8 p.m., in Plymouth
by Jennifer Dye 20 Nov '14

20 Nov '14

INALJ (I Need a Library Job) is a networking organization for librarians and information-minded folks. You do not need to be looking for a job to benefit from the group or one of the in-person meetups. INALJ is holding a November meetup in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area for drinks, nibbles and great conversation. All are welcome to attend. RSVP to karly(a)ix.netcom.com. See the below FAQ for more info. Who should attend? Library and information science students, librarians, information professionals, research analysts, prospect researchers, usability auditors, library directors, professors, deans – basically anyone looking for a library job or who can give advice to someone looking for a library job. What is this event? This is a networking event similar to a no host dinner or open house at a professional conference. You will meet other librarians and information professionals in the area for informal conversations (bring business cards!). There is no charge to attend; you just pay for your own food and drink. Students are more than welcome to join us. Where is it being held? Sean O’Callaghan’s in Plymouth: http://seanocallaghanspub.com When are we meeting? Tuesday, November 25, 6-8 pm How do I RSVP? E-mail Karly Szczepkowski at karly(a)ix.netcom.com if you plan to attend. Why do I have to RSVP? We want to make sure there are enough seats for everyone and be able to contact you if there are any last minute changes so you’re not left standing outside of a closed pub (don’t worry – the pub has never been closed before!). We promise not to use your e-mail address for any other purposes and all e-mail addresses will be deleted after the event. Co-hosted by: Karly Szczepkowski, Eva Gogola, Barry Puckett and Joel Scheuher Jennifer Dye Librarian Parkman Branch Detroit Public Library 1766 Oakman Blvd. Detroit, MI 48238 jdye(a)detroitpubliclibrary.org 313-481-1811 (reference desk) 313-481-1819 (workroom)

Reference help
by Sheila Bissonnette 20 Nov '14

20 Nov '14

Good morning, I’m hoping that one of my helpful librarian colleagues can assist me in finding information for one of my library patrons. I have a patron who is looking for engine repair information for a 1970 Trail 70 Honda motorcycle. We do not have access to Chiltons small engine repair database and the books that we have in our collection do not cover the trail 70. I have searched on Melcat but find it difficult to identify another resource that might help him Any suggestions, guidance, input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sheila — Sheila M. Lexile level and reading counts
by Amelia Nolan 20 Nov '14

20 Nov '14

Help! Has anyone else discovered an easy way to help parents with this conundrum of lexile level books that also have reading count quizzes? Today I had a mom come in who had a sixth grade son who was at a high reading level (lexile 1130-1300) and she was looking for books. I had a really hard time finding titles for her that were still housed in the children's section. I pulled a bunch of novels that I consider higher reading level and then looked them up on the lexile website and many weren't even listed. The ones I did find (they were all nf), the mom would have to turn around and see if these particular titles had quizzes available. Has anyone figured out a more streamlined way of doing this or do you depend on the school librarian/teacher to pass out lists of titles and levels that have quizzes? Thanks for any advice!
