Driver Education eResources in MeL
by Biggs, Deb Renee (MDE) 07 Aug '15

You may have noticed this week's MeL Minute which details the great driver's ed. resources recently added to MeL: http://mel.org/index.php?P=P_MeLMinute_Display, but teens and their parents will also want to note the new resource from Driving-tests.org which can be found in MeL Teens in the Life Happens section, http://teens.mel.org/index.php?P=MeLLifeHappens&ParentId=1000 which includes free driver practice tests just for Michiganders. Included are permits, road signs (also in Spanish), motorcycle, commercial drivers license (for adults :) ), fines and limits. I found Driving-Tests.org in the exhibit at ALA :) Kind regards, Deb Deb Biggs Thomas, MA AMLS Michigan eLibrary & Outreach Coordinator Library of Michigan/Michigan Dept. of Education 702 W. Please see the information below and the attached spreadsheets to take advantage of this opportunity. Feel free to forward this message to other library groups or listservs within Michigan. Content and condition These materials contain new and used works of fiction and non-fiction as well as some legal texts and state government documents. Most have Michigan content, but there is a variety. Some materials are duplicate copies received from state government agencies and other libraries, or withdrawn from our own collections, but the bulk are extra copies of books submitted to the Michigan Notable Books program over the last several years. These materials are both hard and softcover, generally in good or like-new condition, but older materials will show wear. Items from the 19th century may need rebinding or repair, but contents are complete. How to request The material is available by request (email) as well as available for browsing here at LM. You are welcome (strongly encouraged!) to schedule a time to select and claim materials on-site from 8am-5pm, Mon.-Fri. Email bartlettb(a)michigan.gov if you want to schedule a visit. Email requests for delivery of specific titles are handled on a first-come basis by date and time and some or all of the materials you request may no longer be available at the point we receive your email. Only requests for which we can supply NO materials will receive an email response. Shipping The Library of Michigan has limited funding for shipping. We will ship free for materials costing up to $20.00 per institution until/unless the funding is exhausted. If your request will cost more than $20.00 to ship, we will contact you to arrange reimbursement or pick-up. We cannot send materials via MeLDelivery, nor do we accept postage reimbursement. Materials will only be shipped via UPS or Interdepartmental mail (for state government only). *Again, we strongly encourage on-site browsing and pick-up if at all possible.* Email requests must include the title as noted on the spreadsheet(s), a delivery address (street address only, no p.o. box), contact name, phone number and email address. MeL Minute - Driver Education Resources
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 06 Aug '15

06 Aug '15

Hello all, Maybe you would agree that Michigan roads are bad enough without adding unsafe drivers to the mix. To help in efforts to develop driving skills for beginners to aging drivers, we recently added two new resources to MeL.org<http://mel.org/>. For beginners, we now link to Driving-tests.org's Michigan specific site<http://mel.driving-tests.org/michigan/> for drivers needing to study for car, motorcycle, and Commercial Driver License (CDL) tests. 11 car tests, 8 motorcycle tests, and 3 CDL tests include permit practice tests, Signs & Situations, Fines and Limits, HazMat, Air Brakes, and for car and motorcycle, test simulators - just like the real DMV tests. This resource is in the Teens Gateway, Life Happens<http://teens.mel.org/index.php?P=MeLLifeHappens&ParentId=1000> section and Jobs Gateway, Tutorials<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1006> section. Thanks to our partners in the Michigan Secretary of State's office<http://www.michigan.gov/sos/>, we've added a link to their Guide for Aging Drivers and their Families<http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1627_69439---,00.html> in the MeL Health Gateway under Individuals/Families<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=991> and Michigan<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=990> sections. Download the PDF booklet, email SOS to obtain a single or few copies, or contact the SOS office to obtain 50 or more copies. We hope you and your patrons will find these tools helpful. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>.
