Larry Martin’s WWII: In Their Own Words
by Smith, Donna 22 Sep '15

22 Sep '15

Larry Martin’s WWII: In Their Own Words Saturday, Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. Larry Martin returns to bring our nation’s history to the present and foster an appreciation for the hardships endured by our veterans. This installment of the series, hosted at the First United Methodist Church (275 W. Michigan Avenue), features Bill Rappley. He was an Infantryman in the 9th Infantry Division and started fighting in the Harz Mountains in 1945. He was also at the meeting with the Russians at the Elbe River. He witnessed the transfer of two German soldiers to the Russians who immediately shot the Germans and felt that the American officer who turned the Germans over to the Russians should have been court-martialed. Rappley will be present at the program to answer any questions about his experience. Martin will also have a collection of World War II memorabilia on display. This presentation is free and open to the public. Martin can be reached at batt.chief(a)yahoo.com<mailto:batt.chief@yahoo.com> and more information can be found on his website: LMWW2.com This presentation is sponsored by Jackson District Library. The way it happened is this: We paid or got an instructor to come in one time and do a demo class for us – free for the patrons. If there was a lot of interest, I asked the instructor if they wanted to hold regular classes at the library. They take care of all registration details and payments and flyers, etc. We just have the room ready for them. In return, I ask that they donate back to the library the cost of one participant’s class fee each class. So, if the yoga class meets for ten weeks and it is $5 each time – they pay me $50. This is supposed to help pay for electricity, water, cleaning, etc. They must also, once a year, offer one free class session for the public – it helps us and helps them by giving folks a chance to try it out for free. They take care of health waivers, etc. In this way we can say it is a “library sponsored” program and that is why they are entitled to use our room. Otherwise, we don’t rent it out to anyone – we use it too much ourselves. We offer three classes of yoga/pilates per week (1 morning, 2 evening) (1 beginning, 1 continuing, and 1 mixed.) register in advance $5 each time if you register for whole 12-16 week session, otherwise $7 drop in. We offer two Zumba gold classes on Monday and Thursday evenings. $3/session drop in. We’re just starting Tai Chi with a local hospital community outreach program. $5/session for 10 weeks. All instructors are certified. Any other questions, let me know. We love it! Perri, My name is Ryan Deery and I am emailing from the Suttons Bay Bingham District Library up on the Leelanau Peninsula. We are a small Class II library with very little budget for programming but we have a large senior population that lives in the area and uses the library so I spent some time asking around the community to see if anyone would be interested in offering Yoga or Pilates or a very basic exercise class aimed at beginners/retirees at the library. I was specifically looking for another retired individual that did not need income from the classes as I feel very strongly about not charging patrons for any programs held at the library and also because I knew we could not afford to pay the instructor much. As it turns out, I came upon a fairly well to do retiree that had participated in a Yoga instructor workshop, was a regular practitioner and focused specifically on gentle Yoga. She offered to do twice a week Yoga classes at the library free of charge for 10 weeks each fall (last year and again this year). These have been well attended with anywhere from 18-24 people at each class which is the max our meeting room can hold. It has also worked out for the instructor in that a few attendees then requested private, paid for Yoga instruction in their own homes leading to a little revenue. The down side of offering a free class, at least free for the library I mean, is that there is a little less accountability on the case of the instructor. For instance, just today, the instructor informed me that she will miss next week’s class and while such things happen with paid help as well, I do feel that payment does lead to someone putting a little more thought into showing up or not. We also do not have waivers, we thought about this but an informal legal adviser didn’t think it was worth it. The instructor is also very clear about only doing what you can do and not pushing it. Hope that helps, Ryan Deery Suttons Bay Bingham District Library librarian(a)suttonsbaylibrary.org<mailto:librarian@suttonsbaylibrary.org> www.suttonsbaylibrary.org (231)271-3512

Library Director Search Firms/Headhunters
by John Rucker 22 Sep '15

22 Sep '15

Our library board is looking into hiring a search firm to fill our director vacancy. They have asked for quotes from 6 search firms. 1 responded with a quote, 2 declined taking new clients at this time, and 3 simply haven’t responded. 1 quote is not enough to base a decision on, so we were wondering if any libraries out there who have employed search firms for a director position in the pat would be willing to share how much that cost so we can have a better idea as to where this quote lies on the price spectrum. Thanks very much, John John Rucker Asst. Director/Systems Administrator Branch District Library 10 E. Public Libraries: Celebrate World Site Day by becoming a Demonstration Site for BTBL!
by Wambaugh, Stephanie (LARA) 21 Sep '15

21 Sep '15

World Site Day is October 8, 2015! This annual day of awareness is held to generate global attention on blindness and vision impairment. To celebrate, the Braille and Talking Book Library is encouraging even more public libraries to get signed up as Demo Sites for our program. For those of you unfamiliar with our free service, BTBL offers audio books, magazines, and braille titles to Michigan residents with visual or physical disabilities that are unable to utilize standard print materials. Demo sites are issued a digital talking book machine, a book on cartridge, and promotional materials to display at the discretion of each location. We already have close to 60 public library demo sites throughout Michigan. If you are interested in signing up your public library as a demo site, please contact BTBL at 1-800-992-9012 for more information. And, as always, a BIG thank you to all the public libraries out there that are already Demo Sites. We appreciate you! Happy (almost) World Site Day! Tiny Tot's Social Hour
by Miriam Andrus 21 Sep '15

21 Sep '15

Hello All, The Big Rapids Community Library is expanding our programs offered to preschool aged children. We currently offer story time but want to do more. We are thinking of creating a program where parents can bring their children to the library to play together while at the same time providing a social time for the parents. What I am wondering is... We are planning on purchasing some wooden blocks, toys, or something to engage children that need little to no supervision. Do any of you offer a program like this? What do you provide for the kids? Blocks, toys? We aren't sure and what to know what would work best and what will hold up. Any advice would be appreciated! Please reply off list. Thanks!
