Landmark victory for school libraries and students today! Does your voice matter? Yes, it does!! It’s official and, incredibly, it’s virtually UNANIMOUS. Thanks in large part to the enthusiastic response to our call to action yesterday , and a boost from mega-author James Patterson, the US Senate today voted 98 – 0 in favor of the bi-partisan Reed-Cochran Amendment to S. 1177, the Every Child Achieves Act of 2015 ! This amendment will explicitly make effective school library programs part of the Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Prior to the vote, both Sens. Jack Reed (D-RI) and Thad Cochran (R-MS) spoke eloquently in support of this amendment and the importance of school libraries. Their work has been invaluable in garnering attention for the important role that an effective school library program plays in a student’s education. BUT . . . while this is an important “win”, our work is not quite finished. Stay tuned as the bill moves forward! Next steps for this bill will be: continued discussion on the Senate floor, a Senate vote, and then -- once the House has finished work on its own H.R. 5 -- the House and Senate will appoint a conference committee to resolve any disagreements and arrive at a bill that both can agree on. GO school libraries!!!

Renewal Question

Dear Colleagues, Our non-new books have a 3 week lending period with the circulation rule to renew two times (total of 9 weeks). There is an occasional patron who would like further time to finish the book. My questions to you: 1.Do you allow the patron the return the item in the library after the final renewal and then let them have it again, assuming there are no holds? 2.Do you make the patron return the item to the dropbox so he/she must wait 24 hours to check it out again? 3. Do you use any combination of these actions? We are a small library that would like to make sure that all of our patrons get a chance to check out our collection, but at the same time, we don't want to discourage patrons from finishing books they have started, especially if the item isn't in high demand. ALA Accepting applications for the 2016 class of Emerging Leaders

The American Library Association (ALA) is now accepting applications for the 2016 class of Emerging Leaders. Details on the program criteria as well as a link to the application can be found on the Emerging Leaders Web page . The deadline to apply is Aug. 1, 2015. The program is designed to enable library workers to get on the fast track to ALA and professional leadership. Participants are given the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, network with peers and gain an understanding of the ALA structure and wide range of activities. Individuals who are considering applying to the program should be a new library professional with fewer than five years of experience working at a professional or paraprofessional level in a library. They should also be able to attend both the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Boston (Jan. 8 – 12, 2016) and the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando (June 23 – 28, 2016). Additional criteria can be found on the Emerging Leaders’ Web page . An ALA division, round table, ethnic affiliate, state chapter or school library media affiliate will sponsor nearly all of the selected applicants. Each sponsor will contribute $1,000 toward expenses of attending the ALA Midwinter Meeting and Annual Conference ($500 for each conference). Sponsorship is not required for participation in the program. A list of sponsoring units is included as part of the online application. Applicants can indicate on the application which groups they want to consider them for sponsorship. Applicants may also check with various state associations and/or state chapters to find out if they are participating and how to apply for their sponsorship. No more than one person from any institution will be selected for participation in the program in any given year. Position Youth Services Librarian (Youth Services) Education & Experience Education: Masters Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited college or university. Desirable: Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education / Early Childhood Development or any related subject field, with prior public library experience in children's / youth services is desired, but is not a required requisite to qualify for this position. Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of professional public library experience. Certification: Librarian's Permanent Professional Certificate [level II] or higher issued by Library of Michigan, or ability to obtain one within six (6) months of hire. Nature of the Work As a member of the Library's Youth Services Team, this individual reports to the Head of Youth Services and is charged with the responsibility of selecting, acquiring, classifying, and maintaining library materials; and furnishing reference, bibliographical, and readers' advisory services. May assist the Head of Youth Services in performing in-depth, strategic research, and synthesize, analyze, and edit information. This position requires examining, analyzing, and evaluating facts and circumstances surrounding individual problems, situations or transactions, and determining actions to be taken within the within the limits of standard, library policies, or accepted practices. This individual plans and prioritizes work and is expected to solve problems by adapting methods or interpreting instructions. Hours Part-time; Average 26 hours weekly, including evenings and weekends. Salary $16.50; Paid hourly. Prorated benefits package includes: retirement, paid vacation, sick, and holidays. Eligible libraries are located within or working in partnership with organizations that serve at-risk youth, such as alternative high schools, juvenile justice organizations, homeless shelters, foster care agencies, teen parenting programs, residential treatment facilities and other nonprofit and community agencies. Up to 50 grants will be awarded. Working with small groups of six to 10 teens, grantees will host reading and discussion events for each of three selected book titles. The titles - selected in consultation with librarian advisors and humanities scholars - are chosen to resonate with reluctant readers struggling with complex issues like incarceration, violence and poverty.
