Stranger Danger Speaker
by Jocelyn Baldwin Levin 26 Oct '15

26 Oct '15

Hello Information Mavens, Has anyone had anyone other than their local police or fire department do a presentation about Stranger Danger? I have a patron who is in charge of safety week at the elementary school and she is already having the police and fire departments present on other topics, so she would like some other ideas about who might be able to do a Stranger Danger program. Thanks! Forgive my cross-posting! ~Jocelyn Levin Jocelyn (Baldwin) Levin, MLIS Youth Services Librarian Baldwin Public Library 300 West Merrill Street Birmingham, MI 48009 jmb.mlis(a)gmail.com

Program recommendation: Teresa Irish and "A Thousand Letters Home"
by Alison Purgiel 26 Oct '15

26 Oct '15

Just add my kudos to the growing record for the "A Thousand Letters Home" program-the Norton Shores Branch Library just hosted Ms. Irish last Wednesday, October 21st. What an amazing evening! Teresa is a mesmerizing personality and the program flows smoothly from World War II to current day. Many of our patrons mentioned the word inspiring when the evening was over, and I couldn't agree more. If you haven't had the opportunity to have Teresa Irish come to your library yet, I recommend her "A Thousand letters Home" presentation. More information is available at www.AThousandLettersHome.com Thanks, Alison Alison D. Teresa Irish and "A Thousand Letters Home" coming to Parchment Community Library!
by Kristy Zeluff 26 Oct '15

26 Oct '15

Please share this with your patrons, southwest Michigan libraries. We would love to have a nice full house. Parchment Community Library Invites You to a Special Program November 4, 2015, 6:30 pm, at the Parchment Community Library “A Thousand Letters Home” Author Teresa Irish Presents “The Journey of the Letters” Teresa Irish presents the entertaining, inspirational and life-affirming story of The Journey of the Letters. After the 2006 death of her father, Bud, recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart, and two Bronze Stars, Teresa found the 1,000 letters he wrote home from WWII and 250 corresponding photographs. Visited only by him over the course of six decades, the letters were postmarked from Nov 1942 to Dec 1945. The fragile, yellowed pages were written to Bud’s parents, and to the sweetheart who would later become his wife. These treasures are the basis for the book A Thousand Letters Home. From lonesome, moonlit nights listening to the Hit Parade, to the foxholes and front lines in Germany, to correspondence with the heartbroken mothers whose sons died by his side, this is a historic story of life & loss, hope & perseverance, unwavering faith & true love. The program is a heartfelt journey back in time, a tribute to our country’s history, freedoms and family values, and a call to citizenship in today’s world. Irish’s storytelling, accompanied by 1940’s photographs and music, has audiences laughing, crying, and reminiscing. This program reaches across generations with a little something for everyone. This is for all Americans…Lest we forget. Hardcover and softcover books will be available for sale & signing. This event is free and open to the public at the Parchment Community Library, 401 S. Riverview Drive, Parchment, MI. Limited to 50 participants, call 269-343-7747 or visit parchmentlibrary.org to register. www.AThousandLettersHome.com. -- Kristy Zeluff, Adult Services Coordinator Parchment Community Library Ph. 269.343.7747 Kristy(a)parchmentlibrary.org www.parchmentlibrary.org

Hello all, At the 2015 Michigan Broadband Conference<http://www.connectmi.org/broadband-summit> held in Lansing, October 20, the topic of connectivity and access was widely explored in breakout sessions and conversations among attendees. One common thread throughout was the role libraries can and do play in these efforts. To that end, included in MeL is the Books & Literacy Gateway<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=841> with a specific classification for Digital Literacy<http://mel.org/index.php?P=MeLGateways&ParentId=1055> resources. Here you can find links for self-directed tutorials, tools for teaching, and how to stay safe online. Not an exhaustive list but some solid starters. Among them is DigitalLearn.org<http://digitallearn.org/> a site from the Public Library Association funded by an IMLS grant which aims "...to create an online hub for digital literacy support and training." Despite what you hear, not everyone is tech savvy and connected online - yet! MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for next week's MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, email us at contact(a)mel.org<mailto:contact@mel.org> or visit mel.org<http://mel.org/>. Wilsonstak Hinged Periodical Display fronts free to a good home
by Diane Greiner 23 Oct '15

23 Oct '15

We have Wilsonstak shelving that came with hinged Periodical Display fronts (brown in color). We have use for only a handful of the Periodical Display fronts that came with the shelving. If you have this type of shelving and have a use for hinged Periodical Display fronts (along with the brackets to attach them to your shelving), contact me off list and tell me how many you would like. We probably have about 200 of them that need to find a new home. You can take all or part of what we have. You would just need to arrange for pick-up of these fronts. I have attached a couple pictures. It is just the front periodical display that needs a new home. The width is about 35". Diane Greiner Library Director Croton Township Library 8260 S.
