Program September 3, 2015 LANSING - A children's book about good-mannered forest creatures by Michigan author Laurie Keller has been named as the featured title in the 2015 "Michigan Reads! One State, One Children's Book" program, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced today. Keller, who grew up in Muskegon and now lives on the state's southwest side, wrote and illustrated Do Unto Otters (Henry Holt, 2007). The book tells a story of how Mr. Rabbit learns, with sage advice from Mr. Owl, to get along swimmingly with his new neighbors, the Otters, by simply treating them the same way he would want to be treated - the Golden Rule. "Reading can be fun and entertaining while teaching us something at the same time," State Superintendent Brian Whiston said. "Having all children reading at grade level by the end of third grade remains a top priority of the MDE." Keller has written and illustrated a number of children's picture books and also illustrates books for other authors. She presents on her work for children and adults at schools, libraries and other events. The Library of Michigan (LM) coordinates "Michigan Reads!" The program is devoted to increasing early childhood literacy and pre-reading readiness. Programming, events and author visits are scheduled throughout the state in September and October. The program's official launch is Tuesday, September 15 at the Beagle Elementary School in Grand Ledge. Michigan Reads! is modeled after the "One Book, One Community" concept and is designed to emphasize the importance of shared reading practices with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and young school-age children. These practices set the stage for fluent reading achievement in children as they enter school. "This year's Michigan Reads! program should help prompt Michigan residents of all ages reading aloud to children, inspiring a love of reading in both readers and listeners," said State Librarian Randy Riley. "Do Unto Otters is a really fun way to bring children and parents together, reading and learning." The program is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and partners with the Library of Michigan Foundation. Additional contributions come from Jackson National Life Insurance and Macmillan Publishers. As a result of the Institute of Museum and Library Services support, the LM will provide a hardcover copy of Do Unto Otters and programming materials to all public libraries, elementary schools, Head Start and Great Start Readiness programs across the state. In addition, Keller will tour a number of Michigan libraries and schools. MeL Minute - Gale databases special features

Hello all, Many of the MeL database<http://mel.org/Databases> resources provided by Gale Cengage Learning* include tools and special features to make the information they contain accessible in a variety of circumstances. I'd like to point out 2 in particular that you and your patrons should find useful - Listen and Translate Article. Once an article has been opened from a list of search results, the "Listen" feature icon is displayed and enables a user to hear the article/information read aloud. Click on the word "listen" to find "help" which explains how to change settings including reading speed, word color, and enhanced text visibility; download the documents as an audio file; and listen to a specific part of the document. "Translate Article" is on the right side in the tools section and offers over 20 languages. Note Gale's disclaimer that ..."This is a machine translation and not intended to replace human translation." The translated text appears on the screen and a bonus is that the "Listen" feature is available at this point as well and the reading is rendered in the translated language. We're the third department of the OLS alongside St. Mary's Prep and Ss. Cyril and Methodius Seminary. We claim the honor of being the oldest Polish-American cultural and educational institution in the United States (founded 1885). Now, exactly 130 years later, 2015 has really been a landmark year for our community of students, faculty, and staff-let me tell you why. For the last few years, we've been the exclusive North American partner with the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum of Poland. To honor the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945, it was our privilege to host the prestigious and massive Forbidden Art exhibition at the United Nations, in support of an international session on global prevention of genocide. In addition, this February we embarked upon a special partnership with the Stanislawa Moniuszki National Music Academy in Poland-through this, we guided the entire St. Mary's Prep Jazz Ensemble through Poland, where they performed at the LOTOS Jazz Festival to standing-room only audiences! The Polish Mission worked with the Wikiera Foundation to keep the students' cost of this trip very low, and made all the necessary connections to ensure that our St. Mary's group had the experience of their lives. Beyond the trip to Poland, over the past two years, the Polish Mission has assisted the Prep in bringing Polish language back as an on-campus offering. We've orchestrated various displays in the library, the existing Galeria, and other venues that have been visited by Prep classes. We pride ourselves on our unending program of cultural activities that enrich not only our local community, but audiences across the globe. For this and for our multitude of continued cultural work (which you can read about in The Mission, the Orchard Lake Good News, and www.polishmission.com<http://www.polishmission.com>) it is our highest honor to be awarded the Gloria Artis (gold), which is the highest form of recognition awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Poland. We are the only institution in North America that bears this honor, and in July, the Minister herself, Professor Małgorzata Omilanowska, visited us to bestow it in person! For comparison, the short list of recipients of this award includes renowned historian Norman Davies, legend of the Polish stage Adam Hanuszkiewicz, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. I'm sending you this monumental news today, in hopes that you'll consider supporting the truly "Polish Mission" of the OLS. On October 29th, 2015, the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, his Excellency Ryszard Schnepf will formally present the Gloria Artis to us, at a gala dinner at Pine Lake Country Club. By placing an ad in our program book, attending, or by any financial support you'd consider pledging, you'd be supporting the construction of a new Polish art gallery on our historic campus; the first construction project of its type in America in decades. Our plan is to restore the existing Galeria to its original beauty, while also constructing a subtle addition for the collections, built to modern museum standards. Trustee Training October 2 in Petoskey

Each year the Friends of Michigan Libraries Trustee Alliance provides training and this fall the session is set in beautiful Petoskey. Upcoming MeL/MeLCat Server Migration

Hello everyone! In December, the six MeL/MeLCat servers will be moving to a new hosting center. Because of the complexity of the move, we will be suspending MeLCat for the transition period. This move will affect both MeLCat and the MeL Databases. Don’t fret, we will be supplying you with all the information you need throughout the fall. We do have several MeLCat Server Migration webinars scheduled that will going through the entire server migration in detail. The MeLCat Server Migration webinars will be offered on: September 9 - Wednesday 2PM September 14 - Monday 11AM September 15 - Tuesday 3 PM September 18 - Friday 9 AM September 22 - Tuesday 1:30 PM September 23 - Wednesday 10 AM Visit: http://mcls.org/mel/mel-training-events/melcat-training-events/ to register. If you cannot make a live webinar, we will be recording a session and posting it online later this month. We are working on an FAQ as well. We will send an email to the MeLCat list once these are available. Server move highlights: Starting Wednesday, November 18th: For MeLCat: No new MeLCat requests can be placed. Incoming and outgoing materials can continue to be processed. Currently checked out materials can still be renewed and managed using the MyMeLCat links. Staff should print their paging slips and process outgoing materials as QUICKLY as possible so that materials arrive at their pickup location prior to the shutdown. From Wednesday, December 2nd through December 11th For MeLCat: Stop all MeLCat processing. All. MeLCat staff are working to reduce the number of items that will be due during this time. RIDES will continue during this time. If the IP isn't recognized as being in Michigan, patrons will NOT be able to use the optional remote login screen via driver’s license or an account at a MeLCat library. Libraries with direct links to the MeL databases should be able to access the databases if their library IP is registered with the database vendor.
