MeL Minute - Literary Criticism
by Borrelli, Eunice (MDE) 12 May '16

12 May '16

Hi all, Whether it's asked for as literary criticism or literary analysis, students need to find authoritative resources to support their research on assigned reading authors and specific works. Various MeL databases<http://mel.org/databases> provide just such content. Research in Context<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=MSIC> may contain what they're looking for. Within the Literature Category find information on book titles and authors as well as plot structure, characterization, setting, etc. Search results can include references for plot summary, critical reception and themes and construction, and critical essays. Gale Virtual Reference Library<http://www.galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-gale.php?database=GVRL> contains Literary Themes for Students volumes, Concise Major 21st Century Writers, and Shakespeare for Students, which can be searched individually or as a collection. The eBook<http://galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-ebsco.php?database=EBOOK> and eBook K-8 Collection<http://galesupport.com/migeoipcheck/migeoipcheck-ebsco.php?database=EBK8>s contain Cliffs Notes and other literary criticism resources too. Michigan residents or Michigan library access only. MeL Minutes are brought to you by the Library of Michigan. Want more information on MeL? Digitizing services
by Laura Orlowski 12 May '16

12 May '16

Hi all; Through generous memorials in honor of our long-time librarian, Robin Haynes, we are starting a digitizing project. We hope to digitize our small collection of photos, documents, letters, etc., and to borrow items from our community to include, too. We will also be purchasing microfilm copies of our newspapers to be digitized and added to the project. It is our hope to be able to offer an online searchable database once our collection is digitized. If your library has a project (either completed or in-process), we would love to hear from you! We are looking for names and contact info for companies who can do both the digitizing and the online database. We would also love to hear any advice you have concerning this process. Thank you, -Laura Orlowski, director Camden Twp. Library 119 S. Main St. PO Box 189 Camden, MI 49232 517-368-5554 camden(a)monroe.lib.mi.us

Hi-lo collection for adults
by Shannon Powers 12 May '16

12 May '16

Hello, We are considering starting a hi-lo collection for adults in our library. Does anyone have an existing collection of high interest, low level books for adults? If so, how do you shelve the books (interspersed or separate) and what kind of names have you considered for the collection? We'd like something obvious to the patron, but nothing that might carry a stigma. I'd love to hear from anyone with experience in this area, or anyone with suggestions. Thanks, Shannon

GDL Receives NEA Big Read Grant
by Eileen Button 12 May '16

12 May '16

The Genesee District Library is celebrating receiving the NEA Big Read grant of $14,000 for 2016-2017, selecting Jack London's The Call of the Wild. Our kick-off event will feature Creek Stewart, survivalist expert from the Weather Channel's Fat Guy in the Woods, speaking at two branches on Saturday, September 24th. Keynote addresses include Michael Oakes, Jack London expert and impersonator from California, along with national wolf and dog experts. We are grateful for our partnership with two local school districts (Davison Middle School and Grand Blanc West Middle School) that have committed to having their 6th and 7th grade classes read The Call of the Wild in the fall. Another partnership with the Flint Youth Theater means that over 800 students will engage with the text through reading, hearing and experiencing a theatrical interpretation of the classic. So, yes ... we're celebrating on this lovely Thursday in May. And learning how to howl like a "dog gone wild." ARH-WOOOO! Eileen Button Genesee District Library Community Relations Manager (810) 230-9613 "But especially he loved to run in the dim twilight of the summer midnights, listening to the subdued and sleepy murmurs of the forest, reading signs and sounds as a man may read a book, and seeking for the mysterious something that called -- called, waking or sleeping, at all times, for him to come." ~ Jack London, The Call of the Wild
