Happy Valentine's Day Everyone! My question is for those libraries who are PA 164 libraries, not district libraries, or other single municipality libraries. Are library employees covered as employees of your municipality (e.g. Township), or is the Library the employer of record? Thanks again. Hello again—my apologies, it occurred to me after I forwarded the EBSCO email that it was not as straightforward as it should be!? You need to access the MeL eBook (EBSCO) collection from the databases A-Z list: http://mel.org/databases. Don’t click on the link in the EBSCO email. I think I may have misunderstood the email from EBSCO, so my apologies! The MeL eBooks from EBSCO, however, are available at no cost to all MI residents as is all the other subscription content. Google RISE Awards - Grant Opportunity

Google RISE Awards Libraries are eligible to participate in this grant opportunity. The Google RISE Awards is an annual grant program for organizations that promote extracurricular computer science (CS) for pre-university/secondary school/K-12 students, with a specific emphasis on girls and underrepresented minorities. The program is one of the ways Google is working to increase diversity in the tech industry and access to CS education around the world. MeL Minute - Chilton's Library Content

Hello all, A patron's question this week prompted a discussion with the Gale Chilton's<http://galesupport.com/chilton_branding/splashPage.php?loc=lom_accessmich> Product Manager as to whether the content in Chilton's<http://galesupport.com/chilton_branding/splashPage.php?loc=lom_accessmich> changed at the time the interface was redesigned. This patron reported that repair information he had accessed for his vehicle last November didn't appear to be available anymore. The only information he was seeing now for his vehicle was the Bulletins/Recalls. It turns out that the only changes to the content that users may be experiencing is where they find it; no content has been deleted. Some manufacturers (GMC for one) now show the full coverage when available (Repair, Labor Estimating, Bulletins/Recalls, and Maintenance) for sub-models under the broad model name. For example, GMC Envoy XUV and XL sub-models information can be found under GMC Envoy. Any differences for the sub-models is broken out in the broad model coverage. The sub-models may still be listed but contain only Bulletins/Recalls information, as the patron discovered. RFID Conversion Project

Hello Everyone, My library is currently doing a comprehensive weed in preparation for a conversion to RFID tags. As we get closer to the actual conversion process we are starting to plan, but really have no info from others yet about what process other libraries have used. If you can offer assistance, it will be greatly appreciated. Fyi, we will use 2 3M/Bibliotheca conversion stations. We are envisioning 1. We have 80,000 physical items. We plan to have 2 carts for 1 month each (at $500/mo/cart we want to move quickly/efficiently, yet accurately. a. 1 cart in Adults; 1 cart in Children's. 2. Teams of 2, using the cart as they go through the aisles. Pull, tag, scan, reshelve. Repeat. 3. Start at 000 and go straight through to 999. Then A-Z. Then A/V and magazines. 4. Keep a list that is updated with each shift as to what is done. a. To try to capture the out items that are in the ranges as we are doing them. b. So once the 010s are completed, as checked out items in that range come in they are set aside for tagging. c. This is the step that causes the most angst about doing it "right." Questions 5. Trying to figure out an average per hour rate, to calculate how many hours/people are needed and then develop a schedule. 6. In your experience, how many items per hour, on average, was your team able to convert? 7. How many items total did your library convert and how many hours/days did it take? 8. Did you utilize trained staff, volunteers or both? How many total? 9. Did you do the tagging in pairs and how many hours did they work at a time. I figure no one wants to tag for more than 4 hours at once. Is 1 or 2 hours a better max, or are people able to handle 3-4 hours? I figure it's like shelf-reading, a brain can handle repetitive tasks for only so long... 10. What unknown do I not know to ask about? Thank you and have a wonderful day, Nyama Nyama Y.
