Help with definition and description of typical Library Board Committees
by Sylvia Merz 03 Apr '17

03 Apr '17

Asking for help . . . once again. My Board’s first organizational meeting is coming up later this month, and I’m looking for samples of committees and description of activities of those committees that we can use as a template as they set up their committees for the first time. Looking for Personnel, Building & Grounds, Finance, and any other usual committees that Library Boards would have. I have checked the LoM website, as well as QSAC and ALA/United for Libraries to no avail. If you have time to share, that would be great. My email is lelandlibrary(a)lelandtownshiplibrary.org <mailto:lelandlibrary@lelandtownshiplibrary.org> . Thanks as always! Thanks! Sylvia Merz, Director Leland Township Library 203 E. Cedar St., P.O. Re: [Michlib-l] Reminder Take Action Today!
by Lester, Kathy 03 Apr '17

03 Apr '17

I wanted to remind everyone to take Action *today* (if you have not already) to request our Michigan representatives to sign the Dear Appropriation Letters for LSTA/IAL. The services that the Library of Michigan provides through LSTA funds (*including MeL*) are critical to my students, all students in the state, and all residents in the state. I know that both Randy Riley and Shannon White shared information on the depth of services that are provided to Michigan libraries and residents through LSTA funds. It looks like the only Michigan Representatives who have signed the current letter for LSTA, thus far, are Deborah Dingell and Sander Levin. Please consider taking action today. Share: Radio Interview- Re: School Library Media Specialists
by Lester, Kathy 03 Apr '17

03 Apr '17

As MAME continues to advocate for equitable student access to effective school library programs in our state, one of the challenges is to educate others about the important role of the 21st century school library media specialist in our schools as well as the current 'state' of school libraries in our state. As part of the effort to raise awareness, I had the opportunity to be interviewed about school library media specialists in Michigan by Michael Patrick Shiels on the Michigan Big Show Radio Show. The interview aired last week Thursday morning. Here is the direct link: https://www.spreaker.com/user/5707063/kathy-lester-school- library-media-specia I did not know the exact questions that he would be asking me ahead of time; so, I missed a few things that I would have like to have said for instance - along with being 46th in 4th Grade NAEP Reading Proficiency Scores, Michigan is 47th is the ratio of students per media specialist. In addition, only approximately 8% of our schools employ a full-time media specialist. In any case, I hope that I was able to highlight the important work of school library media specialists and wanted to share this interview with all of you. Thank you to so many of you who have supported and continue to support all libraries in our state! --Kathy Lester Kathy Lester, MLIS, MA *Advocacy Chair, Past-President 2014* Michigan Association for Media in Education (MAME) *School Library Media Specialist / Technology Coach* East Middle School, Plymouth-Canton Schools *2012 **State Librarian's Excellence Award Winner* kathyL(a)mimame.org 810.333.5873
