Library staff from all types of libraries are encouraged to participate by voting on which book should be selected, then participate in the discussion, whether online or in-person. We will join together, across state lines and library types, to read and discuss the same book. Submit titles for 2017 Libraries Read: 1 Book! The books the past two years have evoked spirited discussion and a wonderful networking opportunity. This year, we'd like to invite YOU, our community, to submit titles for consideration. We have had several questions lately about strategic planning. As libraries move towards putting a plan together or just want to investigate how they may do this in the future we wanted to make sure the community was aware of the online resources or upcoming events that are available to help. These are not going to create a plan for your library but directors and staff can review and discuss ideas to help prepare for how you want to approach planning in your library. Infopeople is offering a four week online course, Maintaining a Safe and Respectful Library: A Customized Plan from June 20 - July 17. However, feeling - and being - safe at work takes much more than just customer service training. A truly safe workplace is a welcoming workplace that reflects "kindness, mercy, tact, compassion, a desire to understand-and a generosity of spirit" for both customers and staff.1 In this four-week course, participants will complete a Workplace Audit and Action Plan that will help them explore how their library can develop a safe and respectful service environment for visitors and staff. Answer reference questions with accuracy Be able to access information effectively. Excellent customer service skills. Be able to assist patrons in one-on-one computer lessons. Catalog materials using MARC standards, DDC, LCSH, and RDA. Assist in collection development. Maintain the local history room. Archival work with newspapers pertaining to the Kalamazoo area, in particular Comstock. Indexing local historical information. M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. degree from an A.L.A. accredited institution. This job requires: Sitting for long periods of time. Pushing book carts and lifting up to 25 lbs. of library materials Retrieving materials from high or low shelves.
