author visit- John Smolens.
by Jill Hansen-Aune 12 Jul '17

Are there any libraries in the lower peninsula interested in hosting John Smolens?. We'd like to host in him in September, but he'd like to have some other speaking opportunities below the bridge if it works out. I heard him speak in Ludington a few weeks back and he was very engaging. His book Wolf's Mouth was a Michigan notable this year thanks. -- Jill Hansen-Aune Reference Librarian Fremont Area District Library 104 E Main Fremont MI 49412

So excited.....

I'm sitting at the circulation desk just now. The school bus pulls up and drops 43 kids off for our summer reading program!!! Today is the first day of the bus service, in cooperation with the local school, bringing children from the 5 day cares in town to the library for our program. We read to them and go to the day cares all school year long, but the summer presented some problems doing that....so the bus gets them on Wednesdays and Thursdays and brings them to us!!! I'm sooooo excited to see that many join us!!!! Just had to share!!!! Joann CraterDirectorHudson Carnegie District Library (zv170)205 S. Market St.Hudson MI 49247517-448-3801director(a)hudsoncdl.org

Highlighted content These resources can help you strengthen your library and services to the community, explore them today! * ‘Virtual Story Time’ Offers a New Way to Experience Books<http://www.webjunction.org/news/webjunction/tennessee-virtual-story-time.ht…>. Story time is a popular tradition at public libraries throughout the country, but story time events at the Tennessee State Library and Archives have a special twist: instead of performing with groups of eager children crowded at her feet, the librarian administering the program is reading books aloud in mostly empty rooms. The audience – children with vision impairments or other disabilities that make reading standard print books difficult – listen to the stories each month via telephone conference call. Free WebJunction webinars for you! These upcoming webinars are open for registration. If you can’t attend a live session, all WebJunction webinars are recorded and available for free in the Course Catalog<http://learn.webjunction.org/>. Wikipedia for Libraries: Preview the Possibilities, Discover the Opportunities Wednesday, July 19, 2017 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 1 hour Registration: http://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/wikipedia-for-libraries.html Wikipedia is more than its collection of user-contributed articles; it is a dynamic community with powerful tools that ensure reliability. For public libraries, Wikipedia can be a useful tool to connect patrons with quality information and help them build information literacy skills. In this webinar, learn how you can use Wikipedia to expand access to your collections and creatively engage your communities. Gain an understanding of the editorial process from OCLC's Wikipedian-in-Residence and discover how guest presenter Tiffany Bailey has successfully used Wikipedia for community outreach and partnership-building at Dallas Public Library. You'll leave with new insights about Wikipedia and practical tips on how to apply what you've learned. You’ll also hear more about the Wikipedia + Libraries<http://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/wikipedia-libraries.html> online training program being held in the fall of 2017. This free ten-week course offers the opportunity to gain skills in Wikipedia editing and engagement in a collaborative learning environment with public library peers. Presented by: Monika Sengul-Jones, Wikipedian-in-Residence, OCLC; and Tiffany Bailey, Fine Arts Division Manager, Dallas Public Library Measures that Matter Part Three: Moving Toward More Meaningful Measures Wednesday, July 26, 2017 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 1 hour Registration: http://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/measures-that-matter-3.html Circulation, visits, program attendance, patron satisfaction…these are some of the many measures commonly collected by public librarians. But how well do we understand what measures tell the most meaningful stories of today’s libraries? During the first two webinars in this series, we discussed the current state of the public library data landscape – what data collection efforts exist at the national level and how they impact what we know about libraries and their patrons. In this third webinar, we will look toward the future, considering what data public librarians should collect to demonstrate their impact. To do this, we will hear from speakers both within and outside of the library field who will provide multiple perspectives on meaningful measures. This webinar is the third in a three-part series about the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ and the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies’ Measures that Matter initiative, a field-wide discussion of the current state of public library data. Presented by: Chantal Stevens, Executive Director, Community Indicators Consortium; Rebecca Jones, Director, Branch & Neighborhood Services, Brampton Public Library; and Linda Hofschire, Director, Library Research Service, Colorado State Library More Than #MotivationMonday: Motivating Your Team Any Day of the Week Thursday, August 17, 2017 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 1 hour Registration: http://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/motivating-your-team.html Employees motivated to deliver top notch service are key to a library’s success. But many in library organizations don’t know how to effectively instigate employee motivation. As a critical management and leadership skill, it’s important to know what motivation is and isn't, what works and what doesn’t. In this session, we’ll explore factors that influence motivation at work and review strategies for supervisors to keep their teams motivated and productive. No matter the size of your library or your role, you will be inspired to find your own motivation and be able to catalyze others! Presented by: Rachel G. Rubin, MLIS, PhD, Director, Bexley (OH) Public Library, soon to be Director of Library and Information Services, Capital University (OH)

Is your library ready to code?
by Lancaster, Catherine (MDE) 12 Jul '17

12 Jul '17

Source: http://www.ala.org/tools/readytocode On Thursday, June 22, 2017, the American Library Association announced a competitive grant program sponsored by Google<https://blog.google/topics/education/libraries-across-us-are-ready-code/> that will fund a cohort of school and public libraries to develop resources to help get U.S. libraries "Ready to Code." The $500,000 pilot program is part of Phase III of Libraries Ready to Code, an ongoing collaboration between ALA and Google to ensure expert library professionals are prepared to develop and deliver programming that promotes computer science and computational thinking among youth, two skills that will be required for challenges and jobs of the future. 25 to 50 participating libraries will receive funding from ALA, along with consulting expertise and operational support from Google. Individual libraries may use funding for devices, staffing, marketing and other costs associated with piloting an educational toolkit developed in partnership, by libraries, for libraries. The toolkit, set to release in conjunction with National Library Week in April 2018, will consist of computer science resources that libraries find most useful for designing and implementing youth computer science programming. This cohort of libraries will also initiate a community of practice to sustain momentum and build expertise across thousands of school and public U.S. libraries. Applications Open Soon YALSA, in partnership with ALA's Office for Information Technology Policy as well as AASL and ALSC, is administering the $500,000 sponsorship from Google. The program will run from July 2017 through June 2018. Sign up for updates here<http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/fsGfOFVeaMfJxdXc033H2>. We will email you when the application is open in mid-to-late July. In preparation for applying, check out our list of resources<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-bh8ZE1swWzD-pSSyFmDXl0ipqAePwgXdGgCQGK…> to learn more about Ready to Code concepts, computational thinking, and successful programs that highlight computational thinking and coding through libraries. Libraries Ready to Code is a project of the American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy. Through research, continuing education and resource development the Libraries Ready to Code project aims to empower library staff working with youth and families to design computational thinking activities for informal learning settings.
