KALAMAZOO COLLEGE REFERENCE AND INSTRUCTION LIBRARIAN Kalamazoo College Library seeks a dynamic and innovative Reference and Instruction Librarian to provide instructional and research assistance to the faculty, students, and staff of Kalamazoo College. The Reference and Instruction Librarian participates in appropriate faculty and professional activities including serving on college and departmental committees. This is a full-time, twelve-month administrative staff/non-teaching faculty appointment. Early career librarians are encouraged to apply. Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS; demonstrated commitment to public services; familiarity with current reference resources; knowledge of information literacy practices and principles; excellent interpersonal communication, presentation, and organization skills; ability to develop research guides and appropriate pedagogical materials in order to effectively deliver instruction; demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and apply skills quickly; adept at handling multiple responsibilities; strong project management, analytical, and problem-solving skills; strong customer service orientation and ability; willingness to work effectively in a collaborative team environment; sense of humor and collegial approach to innovation and problem solving. Physical requirements of the position include ability to work in a library/office environment with extensive use of computer and telephone; ability to lift and carry up to ten pounds; ability to read and write, and able to handle and process both paper and electronic documents; ability to move between and within campus buildings. Preferred: Experience in library instruction; familiarity with web CMS, Photoshop, HTML, and CSS; academic library experience; familiarity with current practices for copyright compliance; knowledge of cataloging principles and practices; familiarity with Innovative Interfaces systems (III) or Ex Libris. [librarysystemlogofin] Wayne State University Library System Assistant Library Director II for Resource Acquisitions Resource & Collections Strategy Services This position will lead and coordinate the identification, negotiation, acquisition, renewal, and payment of all library information resources. The Assistant Library Director II manages the acquisition lifecycle for all formats of materials, oversees Interlibrary Loan, and holds ultimate responsibility to manage e-resources, including maintaining access and communicating changes with the broader university. Working collaboratively with the Subject Liaisons, the Collection Development Team, and the Libraries Business Affairs Office, the Assistant Library Director II will create and manage a collections budget of approximately $10 million dollars. The successful candidate will supervise 4 FTE support staff members. The Assistant Library Director II demonstrates a strong commitment to customer service and a forward-thinking approach to resource acquisition and management. This position plays a key role in relationships with vendors, the University Office of General Counsel, consortia, subject liaisons, and the University Libraries' Business Office. This position reports to the Director for Resource & Collections Strategy Services. The full breadth of the position's responsibilities remains flexible and adaptable to new and emerging staffing models, schedules, and technologies. This position supports the Wayne State University mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. Essential Functions: Oversee and manage materials budget of approximately $10 million dollars; Supervise four (4) support staff members in both Acquisitions and Interlibrary Loan; Negotiate pricing, licensing, and access terms for electronic resources with vendors; serve as primary contact for collection-related products, services, and user requests for materials; Provide leadership and direct oversight for trialing, licensing, acquisition, registration, activation, and troubleshooting of all commercial content in digital form; Chair the Collection Development Team; Collaborate with the AD for Discovery Services and Resource & Collections Strategy team members to ensure timely access to electronic resources via the local catalog, A-Z lists, link resolver, Summon, etc; Collaborate with Coordinator for Assessment to identify value in subscription packages; Oversee ordering, receiving, and processing of invoices for tangible materials in the collections; Collaborate with the Office of Business Affairs in the annual audit of library material expenditures and year-end roll-over; Coordinate annual renewal processes for print and electronic journals; and Implement the University Libraries' goals and objectives as they pertain to the acquisition of library materials. In particular, support the University Libraries' commitment to providing collections that support the curriculum, research, and scholarship. Qualifications: MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution; Minimum 3 years of experience acquiring, licensing, and managing the lifecycle of scholarly e-resources; Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate the acquisition and licensing of scholarly resources; Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of scholarly e-resources in a complex publishing environment; Knowledge of current issues in acquiring, licensing, and managing scholarly resources. Proven record of collaborative problem solving and facilitating cross-organizational cooperation in service of user needs; Demonstrated ability to set priorities, exercise flexibility in meeting objectives, and effectively manage multiple projects and assignments; Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues; and Exceptional attention to detail and high degree of accuracy. Preferred Qualifications: 5+ years of progressively responsible acquisitions and licensing experience in an academic library; Experience with Proquest Intota ERM; Supervising in a unionized environment; Experience with the Innovative Millennium acquisition module and Experience with the Atlas Illiad Interlibrary Loan system. All, For those who are heading to the OverDrive Digipalooza conference in Cleveland, the "stay in the middle lane and then veer to the right" advice below from last week is still applicable. We have relatives and friends who live in and around Toledo, so we drive around and in that area on a regular basis. Usually I am the one doing the driving. However, this past weekend my significant other was behind the wheel. This was the first time she had run that gamut, and when we came to the area in question, I advised her to bend the wheel to the right. However, she failed to do so, and we ended up on I-75 instead of I-280. No big deal for us, as we are pretty familiar with that area. No big deal for you, either as you will eventually bump into the Ohio Turnpike, albeit further west than you need to be. Besides, there are a number of corn and soybean fields that are guaranteed to keep you enthralled and entertained between the I-75 and I-280 entrances to the Ohio Turnpike. If your route is US-23 south to I-475 east to I-75 south to the Ohio Turnpike, there is construction in Toledo on both I-475 and I-75. That isn't an issue, just follow the signs. However, if your route is I-75 south to I-280 south to the Ohio Turnpike, HEADS UP. When you cross the state line into Ohio on I-75, get in and STAY IN the middle lane. There are three lanes, but not for long. The far right lane is closed about one mile into Ohio. Don't get caught there, as the huge number of trucks can make it difficult to get back to the middle lane. If you've run this route before, you will recall that the exit for southbound I-280 from southbound I-75 in Toledo has always been the LEFT lane. That is not currently the case. The left lane now continues to I-75. The right lane is closed. This means the MIDDLE lane is the place to be, to exit to I-280. And to add to the confusion, even if you are in correct, middle lane to exit to I-280, you still have to veer right to exit I-75 to I-280. The signage that explains all of this is poor, and in my mind anyway, only serves to make a confusing situation even more so. One electronic sign on the right shoulder flashes "Do not follow GPS." You will recall that when Michael and Dwight from Dunder Mifflin followed GPS, they drove into a pond. While you won't drive into a pond if you follow your GPS, you will end up continuing south on I-75 through Toledo to the Ohio Turnpike. No big deal, I guess, but doing so will take you about 5-10 miles out of your way to the west, when you really want to be headed east, towards Cleveland. Don't be Michael and Dwight!
