Have any libraries tried using Meetup.com to advertise library events? It seems like a good platform for outreach, I've used it personally to find local groups, including book clubs. They seem to have non-profit pricing as well, though I'm waiting to hear back on exactly how generous that is; the $35/month groups are normally charged isn't unreasonable anyway. [Take Action For Libraries] Advocacy Alert: Net Neutrality Send an Email<http://cqrcengage.com/ala/app/take-action?engagementId=418433&ep=AAAAC2Flc0…> What Happened: The day before Thanksgiving, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Pai publicly shared his plan to dismantle network neutrality protections approved by the FCC in 2015 and affirmed by the federal appeals court in 2016. The new draft order is scheduled to be voted on by the five FCC commissioners on December 14. Why It Matters: Net neutrality is the principle that internet service providers (ISPs) must enable access to all legal content and applications regardless of the source and without favoring or blocking specific services or websites. Strong, enforceable rules are critical to the functioning of modern libraries because we rely on the internet to collect, create and disseminate essential online information and services to the public. Libraries and our patrons cannot afford to be relegated to "slow lanes" on the internet. At your event, announce that your story time is part of the national Money Smart Week initiative, read the Lots and Lots of Coins book (and other relevant, age-appropriate books from your collection), perhaps do a craft activity (decorate piggy banks, color pictures that feature money, sing money songs, do finger plays, etc.), and then hand out the free books to families who attend! 9. After your event takes place, enter your attendance numbers. From the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, in April you'll receive an email notice of where to submit. Yep. It can be that easy. (Although, if you want to plan more money-related events for youth or adults, we can help you with that too! Email the Chair and she can share a children's librarian list of ideas with you.) There must be a catch, right? Here it is: By December 31, 2017, the Michigan Money Smart Week Chairwoman needs to know how many free copies of the book you can use! There is a limited quantity, so it's first come, first served. ALA News for November 21, 2017 NEWS FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ALA strenuously opposes FCC proposed order on net neutrality Today American Library Association President Jim Neal released the following statement regarding the proposed order on net neutrality released by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. “Preserving net neutrality is essential for equitable access to online information and services and thus a vital concern for our nation’s libraries. Now that the internet has become the primary mechanism for delivering information, services and applications to the general public, it is especially important that commercial Internet Service Providers are not able to control or manipulate the content of these communications. Libraries, our patrons and America’s communities will be at risk if the FCC repeals all protections contained in its 2015 Open Internet Order with no plans to replace with any enforceable rules. We strenuously disagree with the FCC’s actions and will continue to advocate for essential net neutrality protections.” The FCC Commission will vote on the proposed order at the December open Commission meeting on Thursday, December 14, 2017, from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm EST. These were two of the key findings of a study released this month by Dr. Susan B. Neuman, a professor of childhood education and literacy development at New York University. Expanding E-Rate service capacity at the state level

Greetings Michigan Library Community, In fiscal year 2017, the legislature appropriated one full time employee to support E-Rate administration for the State of Michigan. The Michigan Department of Education Office of Data and Information Management is pleased to announce that Joseph Polasek has accepted the position of E-Rate Specialist in the Educational Technology Unit. In funding year 2016, Michigan school districts and libraries were reimbursed over $68 million dollars for internet access and internal connections (WIFI). Joe will assist districts and libraries in maximizing their E-Rate reimbursements as recent programmatic changes to E-Rate at the federal level have been challenging for applicants. Additionally, he will assist districts with leveraging federal funds to meet connectivity targets for transforming teaching and learning, not simply to enable online assessments. The position also will assist districts and libraries in moving to consortium applications for internal connections, paralleling the migration of ISDs and subsequently school districts over to the Michigan State Education Network (MISEN) for internet access. The E-Rate Specialist will work more broadly on infrastructure issues and with community anchor institutions to narrow the homework gap, extending internet access to unserved and underserved areas through private sector partnerships and pilots. I will still be working on E-Rate as well, but it is only a small sliver of my job.
