FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - APRIL 16, 2018 - Kalamazoo Public Library and Kalamazoo Public Schools Partner for Shared Card and Reducing Summer Slide
by Farrell Howe 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 16, 2018 CONTACT Farrell Howe Marketing & Communications Manager Kalamazoo Public Library 269-553-7879 Alex Lee Executive Director of Communications Kalamazoo Public Schools 269-337-1572 Kalamazoo Public Library and Kalamazoo Public Schools Partner for Shared Card and Reducing Summer Slide Kalamazoo, MI – April 16, 2018. Kalamazoo Public Library (KPL) and Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) have long been recognized in the Kalamazoo community as champions for childhood literacy. With this legacy in mind, KPL and KPS have partnered to create OneCard, a shared card that serves as both a library card and a student ID. Also, to prevent the typical loss of skills most students experience during the summer known as “summer slide,” KPL and KPS will be offering fun programs that will keep Kalamazoo children reading all summer long! Kalamazoo Public Library Summer Reading Challenge kicks off on June 1. Those that accept the challenge will trek “Around the World in 90 Days” by reading a suggested book from each continent. Unlike many other summer reading programs, KPL’s lasts all summer long and includes prizes for every 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of reading for kids and teens, and a 60-day prize for adults! Participants can play online or pick up a game board at any KPL location beginning June 1. Information about the Summer Reading Challenge can be found at kpl.gov/summer. Kalamazoo Public Schools will continue its summer literacy efforts through two programs. The district will once again send books to children entering third through sixth grade to encourage summer reading. The children will receive one book every 10 days for the duration of the summer holiday. And, for the second year, KPS will open five elementary school libraries, so students can continue to visit and check out books from their schools. This year, libraries will be open at Arcadia Elementary School, Edison Environmental Science Academy, Lincoln International Studies School, Spring Valley Center for Exploration and Washington Writers' Academy. The libraries will be open two days a week. Also during the summer, KPL and KPS will be coordinating efforts to launch a landmark program: OneCard, an innovative collaboration with one goal – a Kalamazoo Public Library card for every Kalamazoo Public Schools student. “The goals of OneCard are simple: to create an incredibly easy process for KPS students to get a library card, visit their library, check out books and most importantly to develop a love for reading,” said Kalamazoo Public Library Director Ryan Wieber. Beginning this fall, all KPS students, faculty and staff will automatically be enrolled in the OneCard program. OneCard provides full access to all KPL print, AV and online materials. ONeCard was created to enrich and support school instruction complementing the resources available through school libraries with access to KPL’s physical and electronic resources. OneCard also reduces potential barriers associated with registering for a library card, visiting KPL and accessing its collections. "We have long appreciated our partnership with the Kalamazoo Public Library. We particularly appreciate this new joint initiative, which will give thousands of our children library cards that they would not otherwise have had and which will open up whole new worlds for our kids as a result," said KPS Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. Additional information and promotions for OneCard will be released in May. #### Farrell Howe Marketing and Communication Manager Kalamazoo Public Library 269-553-7879 [id:image001.png@01D38872.8E813CC0]

Storytime survey
by Mary Daugherty 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

HI, I am looking for examples or suggestions on surveys for parents to complete about the storytimes that we have done this year. I don't feel it is important to break it down by ages or providers. I am looking for more of a general survey that also has room for suggestions. Thanks for sharing, Mary Daugherty

Bernie Margolis
by Nancy Bellaire 16 Apr '18

16 Apr '18

It is with a heavy heart that I send news of the passing of Bernie Margolis, former director of the Monroe County Library System (MI), Pikes Peak Library District (CO), and the Boston Public Library. Bernie most recently served as the New York State Librarian. Bernie was the most passionate of library champions and served the American Library Association in many roles including that of ALA Councilman. Those of us who knew and worked with Bernie will remember his can-do attitude, his fierce defense of penal fines for public libraries in Michigan, and his vision for libraries of the future. Bernie's obituary has not yet been published, but his funeral will be at the Levine Funeral Home in Albany New York at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 18. Burial will be at about 1 PM at the Pittsfield Cemetery in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bernie's wife, Amanda Batey Margolis. Presenter Recommendation for Family Programs - Pint Size Polkas with Uncle Mike Schneider
by Mary Beth Reasoner 15 Apr '18

15 Apr '18

Dear All - Tecumseh District Library recently presented a family program (designed for Kindergartners through Fifth Graders) called "The Library Rocks/Polkas" featuring Pint Size Polkas with Uncle Mike Schneider. He was fantastic and has the qualities that every Children's Librarian who books performers desires! Mike was very personable, both in his e-mail correspondence and in person. He was patient and willing to work with us as we made several attempts to find a compatible booking date. He came prepared, on time, and full of energy, even though we were his third program of the day! We so enjoyed Mike's excellent accordion playing and his patter. We sang along, danced the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey, and clapped along to a variety of songs played polka style! He often asked for young volunteers to come up and participate in funny trivia questions about rocks. He was able to ad lib, which is a necessity when working with children! He has a very descriptive website and offers a variety of programs, including the one which revolves around the this year's CSLP SRP theme, "Libraries Rock!" His prices are reasonable and our program was funded via TDL's Friends Group. He lives in Wisconsin but performs often in Michigan. He will offer a discount when he can schedule performances for more than one library in a day. Check out his website at www.pintsizepolkas.com<http://www.pintsizepolkas.com> We received many compliments from parents for a fun-filled evening!
