MeL Minute: Consumer Reports on MeL.org
by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 24 Oct '18

24 Oct '18

Greetings Michigan Library Community, [cid:image002.png@01D46BB1.1EC5A600]By now many have heard the good news that MeL carries Consumer Reports (part of MasterFILE complete)<http://widgets.ebscohost.com/prod/customerspecific/mel/auth.php?database=co…>. This well-loved resource is available on the eResources page under Popular eResources as well as in the alphabetical listing. You can also reach it by going into MasterFILE. Our subscription is the complete version of the magazine, includes the annual buying guide, and is not embargoed. The experience available via MeL.org is NOT the subscription interface known as ConsumerReports.org that many Michigan libraries pay for, and are accustomed to. Our interface offers a basic, browse-only environment with a link to a searchable version of the complete magazine. We do have plans to develop a more visual interface, with a built-in search feature, to improve the delivery of the Consumer Reports magazine content. Look for it in upcoming months. For those who may not be familiar, the ConsumerReports.org subscription provides richer information, and searching functionality apart from the magazine (although the magazine information is included). It includes deeper information and research data on consumer products not found in the publication, instant access to the exclusive Cars Best Deals Plus data for car buying and repair, the TV Screen Optimizer that shows the best screens for your type of viewing, the credit card comparison tool, and some video content. We've fielded several questions from folks about Consumer Reports and our goal with this MeL Minute is twofold: 1.) to inform you of some of the differences between these eResources and 2.) to clarify what MeL.org has purchased for statewide access. We hope you're enjoying the new MeL! If you have questions or feedback you would like to share, please don't hesitate to drop us a line by using the form at mel.org/contact. Brought to you by the MeL Team. Want more information on MeL? Stay tuned for the next MeL Minute available on many Michigan library listservs, visit http://mel.org<http://mel.org/>, or sign up for the MeL Minute and other Library of Michigan e-mail lists via GovDelivery<https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/MILOM/subscriber/new>. We encourage you to share MeL Minutes with your colleagues and networks. MeL databases are available to Michigan residents or Michigan library or school access only. #IMLSGrant Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan 702 W. ISO public use printer/copier recommendations
by Jeanette Marks 24 Oct '18

24 Oct '18

Hello collective brain, Our branch needs to replace an old public use copier, and I'm looking for recommendations on multi function copier/printers that can do the following for patron use: Print and Copy: b&w and color Network to our public use computers Wireless printing Coin operated Scan is optional, as we already have a scanner at one of our computer carrels If you have a printer/copier with the above features for your patrons, please contact me direct. I'd like make and model, need to know cost of software/computer language, and if a dedicated computer is required. Are there any issues with Apple and Windows based devices wirelessly printing? We are upgrading from an old, and dead, black and white coin operated copier patrons use independently, and a black and white networked printer that patrons pay for and pick up prints at the circulation desk. My vision is to provide our patrons with a printer/copier they can operate independently of staff. Yes, utopia. Our library cards do not have the capability to act as prepaid cards, hence the need for coin op. Thank you so much, Jeanette Marks, Managing Librarian Bay County Library System Pinconning Branch Library 218 Kaiser St. Pinconning, MI 48650 PH 989-879-3283 ext. 207 FAX 989-879-5669 jmarks(a)baycountylibrary.org

MiKidLib 2019 will be held on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. MiKidLib is in its 6th year and is an annual unconference for youth services staff (current, aspiring, and retired). If you have not participated in an unconference before, the participants drive the sessions, rather than a presenter. Legal Information Reference Center
by Ryan Tackabury 24 Oct '18

24 Oct '18

Hello, I heard from a lot of people at MLA last week that found the EBSCO Legal Information Reference Center? lacking some of the legal forms we find ourselves using every day. During a session with Joe Ceterski, an EBSCO representative, someone asked about this. Joe asked us to submit a message through the EBSCO support page about which forms we needed but were not available, and that if multiple people/libraries would submit a message, it would be more likely to get addressed quickly. Just a reminder that if you cannot find a form you are looking for, please let EBSCO know on their support page, which you can find here<http://support.ebscohost.com/contact/askus.php>. Thanks. Hi All, Our power went out on Monday, came back on but the internet never did, and I am off today. Tomorrow I will wade through the copious amounts of emails from everyone in the order that I received them, and start sending things out as I can, assuming our internet is back up when I get there. Thanks for understanding. Syntha Green Baldwin Public Library
