Youth Services Programming During A Time of Crisis Thursday, September 6, 2018 2:00 PM EST Youth Services Programming During a Time of Crisis<https://w3.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/LM2017_Youth_Services_P…>, is a *downloadable toolkit* designed to help public libraries in times of crisis plan programming that creates a sense of normalcy for youth and teens in times of disaster or upheaval. This toolkit is the Capstone Project designed and written by Jamie Gilmore, Grace Morris, Erica Trotter, and Alexandria Wardrip through the University of Washington's Information School. It was also featured (8/30/17) in The Conversation's article, "Public Libraries can (literally) Serve as a Shelter from the Storm<https://theconversation.com/public-libraries-can-literally-serve-as-a-shelt…>," by Grace Morris. Grace will be joining LM's Youth Services Coordinator, Cathy Lancaster, to give library staff and administrators a deeper look at why the toolkit was created and how you can use it in your library. This will be an interactive webinar, so come prepared to roll up your sleeves and contribute your thoughts and ideas! This webinar will be recorded and link shared with registrants if you cannot attend in person. The Library of Michigan will receive resources, training, and support through NASA@ My Library, a STEM education initiative that will increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for library patrons through the nation, including geographic areas and populations currently underserved in STEM education. The resources and training will be available for local libraries across Michigan to access beginning in July. "The Library of Michigan will be circulating activity kits directly to libraries to steer programming for all ages and will be offering training this fall to public library staff." Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation. One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue, and eye donation. Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation, and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry<http://bit.ly/ML4Life>. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life<http://www.librariesforlife.org/>. This statewide campaign, which includes public, academic, special and hospital libraries of all sizes has inspired over 3,900 people to sign up as donors! “Libraries have been great partners in saving and healing lives,” said Dorrie Dils, Gift of Life Michigan’s CEO. “They’ve been very successful at educating the public about the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation. Thanks to this partnership, Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,200 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.” More than 95% of Americans<http://organdonor.gov/dtcp/nationalsurveyorgandonation.pdf> support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan, only 63% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the donor registry. Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need. “Someone you know probably needs - or will someday need - a lifesaving organ or tissue transplant. People die waiting because not enough organs are available.
