Toward Gigabit Libraries Toolkit is a free, open-source technology learning, diagnostic and advocacy tool designed for public and tribal libraries in the US
by White, Shannon (MDE) 23 Jan '19

23 Jan '19

The Towards Gigabit Library Toolkit is designed to empower practitioners to become more savvy and effective consumers, advocates, and providers of high-quality Internet access and digital services to their communities. Funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian grant, the toolkit is designed to scale nationally to all libraries, regardless of size or geographic location. Explainer Video: https://youtu.be/PXWv3-HYm-I Project Site: http://www.internet2.edu/tgl What is the Toolkit? The Toward Gigabit Libraries Toolkit is a free, open-source technology learning, diagnostic and advocacy tool designed for public and tribal libraries in the US. The toolkit will guide you through a series of questions about your technology environment -- and provide you with all the information you need to answer the questions. The toolkit is an excellent way to diagnose and fix library technology problems. Some libraries have found it especially useful in preparing for E-rate requests, budget cycles, and even in helping open up lines of communication between library staff and tech workers! Best of all, you do not need to be a "techie" to use the toolkit. While it's always helpful to have someone with technical knowledge to assist, this toolkit was piloted with at least 70 library staff in 58 rural and tribal libraries in the US to ensure that it is as simple as possible to use. Libraries, State Library Organizations, Research and Education Networks, and others in AK, AZ, CT, ID, KS, NE, NM, OK, PA, SD, TX, and WA rolled up their sleeves and helped test and refine the toolkit over the 3-year pilot period. The toolkit is divided into 10 sections covering 60 pages. It also has a handy glossary section at the end for quick lookups of technical terms. The toolkit is designed to address the most common technology issues in libraries, so it does cover a lot of ground. You or libraries you work with may need to only complete the sections that are the most important to you. After you've completed the toolkit, you can use another document called the Broadband Improvement Plan to create your own long-term and short-term strategies to improve your technology! Remix Friendly The toolkit is free and open source (licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License<http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/>). As well as being a stand-alone resource, you are free to use anything from the toolkit and mix it into other documents. This may be especially useful for State Library Organizations; Rural & Education Networks; Library Consortiums and others who would like to customize the toolkit materials. What did project participants say? ? "I thought it was very effective. I most appreciated the visual diagram which pictured how Internet service works, and the different steps it goes through before it gets to a Computer." ? "I found the process to be very educational and helpful. I feel I learned a huge amount about our broadband (and local network) in going through the process, and I expect to learn even more as I read through the materials you left with me. I also really appreciate having the physical printouts and sheets to refer back to and use as a reference." ? "Going through the toolkit helped me understand my library's broadband infrastructure better and feel more confident talking about it with others." Exterior Book Drops
by Tracy Logan 23 Jan '19

23 Jan '19

Hello Wonderful People, In this picture you will note, ye olde book drop. It is accessible to the public by an exterior slot and the metal lid can be closed at night. This means we can keep our book drop open at all times and we never have to worry about whatever pesky things someone might drop into it after hours. I would like to install something similar in our new branch library but I'm having a hard time finding a vendor that makes a lidded book drop like this one. Any suggestions? Thank you! You are all lovely! [image: Book Drop.jpg] -- Tracy Logan Library Director Cadillac Wexford Public Library 411 S. Lake Street Cadillac, MI 49601 231-775-6541 logant(a)cadillaclibrary.org

Possible ADA problem in the making
by lois-sez 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

As both a performer and librarian I was approached by a librarian for ideas on a possible ADA problem that could easily become a problem for all libraries. I'm also the mother of a hearing impaired daughter and appreciate the posting on program publicity about providing assistance with advance notice. This, however, might take that stated assistance and create problems with copyright, privacy and more. The library has a homebound resident wanting initially video access to library board meetings. They have been providing that by having a staff member tape them. Now there is a similar request to permit attending programs this way. The library would be unable to do this with their movie program and can see this being a problem beyond that for other programs. I agreed. Musicians, for example, would be ruled out for most 20th century music. The venue, not the performer, is liable for payment of royalties. As a storyteller, only material in the Public Domain would be able to be used. Sometimes I have received permission as long as electronic reproduction is not made. What would this do for Fair Use when a librarian does a storytime? It definitely goes beyond what is permitted under Fair Use. When the library director brought up privacy concerns for the audience, I suggested the camera angle avoid the audience. Later, thinking about my own programs, I realized this also will affect audience participation in a program, requiring permission forms. As an example of the latter, and the copyright issues, I told the director about a program I'm developing about prohibition (High Times in the Dry Times) which stretches from Michigan's entry into prohibition two years before the entire nation until its ending in 1933. This would possibly require royalties for some music such as "Happy Days Are Here Again." (Fortunately the Charleston and the song "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" just entered Public Domain.) The point is both lectures and concerts may require library payment for both spoken text and music still under copyright. (That could include some preschool songs if a child or, in this case, grandparent want to "attend" with a grandchild.) Looking at those privacy concerns, I plan to have individuals in the audience show large pictures about what I'm discussing. That idea of camera angles could require anyone not wishing to be seen sit behind the camera. Try that with preschoolers. I gave her the number of a lawyer particularly attuned to the copyright/royalty issue, but I'd love to have others here add their thoughts and suggestions before this becomes a new standard for libraries.
