The goal is to introduce new authors and help librarians start conversations with readers that will extend beyond the books from each list and promote reading for years to come. HWA is partnering with United for Libraries, Book Riot, and Library Journal/School Library Journal on “Summer Scares.” Award-winning author Grady Hendrix and a committee of four librarians will be selecting three recommended fiction titles in each of three reading levels— Middle Grade, Teen, and Adult— for a total of nine “Summer Scares” selections. The goal of the program is to encourage a national conversation about the entire horror genre, across all age levels, at libraries all over the country and ultimately get more adults, teens, and children interested in reading. The award is named for award-winning children’s author Virginia Hamilton (1936-2002), recipient of the 1983, 1986 and 1996 Coretta Scott King Book Award, 1974 National Book Award and the 1975 John Newbery Medal. The award pays tribute to the quality and magnitude of Hamilton’s exemplary contributions through her literature and advocacy for children and youth, especially in her focus on African-American life, history and consciousness. In odd-numbered years, practitioners will be recognized, while authors, illustrators or author/illustrators will be honored in even-numbered years. The deadline for applications is Nov. 16. Plans, coordinates, and oversees library services and programs, including budgetary and schedule oversight. 2. Conducts library tours, presents programs to local groups as requested and performs outreach activities for library guests. 3. Develops Youth Services subject areas in the library materials collection, selects materials for purchase and maintains the collection. 4. Interviews applicants for hire and makes recommendations to the library administration. 5. Supervises and trains Youth Services staff. 6. Confers with community groups in an advisory capacity. 7. Researches and implements new library services and products. 8. Promotes library services through the use of social media and print media. 9. Provides reader’s advisory, reference and other guest assistance services. 10. Advises the library administration in regard to policies and procedures in area of responsibility; writes reports and recommendations; implements decisions. 11. Enforces library policies and procedures. 12. Compiles statistical information on area of service. 13. Serves on professional and library system committees as assigned by the library administration. 14. Displays professional decorum in all interactions with library guests and fellow staff. 15. The MI PR Group is back

Hi Everyone, Myself and Mary Ruthko from Bay County Library System are reviving the MI PR Group. The MI PR Group an informal PR group to work together and share our successes, learn from our non-successes and put our brains together to try and tackle issues and help all of our libraries. We invite anyone involved with marketing or public relations in libraries to this group. We will be meeting on Monday, December 3 from 2:00 - 4:00pm at the Southfield Public Library in the Meeting Room. Agenda: ● Introductions ● Presentation by Liz Breed, Michigan eLibrary Coordinator ● Roundtable discussion about marketing the MEL databases both to the public and our own staff ● Introduction to Dale Jaslove, Community Engagement Specialist, TLN ● Going around the table - what are you up to at your library We are striving toward having 3 - 4 meetings a year and hopefully even an unconference! Attrium libraries that have connected to NCIP

We are especially interested in hearing how you handled Melcat check-ins. Do you put them aside and have ILL staff checking them in on INN-Reach, or did you train everyone to toggle between Inn-Reach and Atriuum?
