Highlighted Content on WebJunction * Data Can Help You Tell Your Storytime Success<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…>: Assessment can be time consuming, intimidating, stress inducing, and just overwhelming. Where do you even begin? What do you do with the data? In the recent webinar, presenters and participants acknowledged the challenges around assessment while offering ideas on how data gathering can be useful. It can help us prove our value, use resources more efficiently, deliver quality programs, communicate with funders, and show growth. Moving from head counts at storytimes to outcome measurement empowers us to measure the good we do and our value to patrons. * Launching into STAR Net’s “Summer of Space”<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…>: Summer is fast approaching, and the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), the STAR Library Network's NASA@ My Library initiative, and NASA are working together to create a fun and engaging summer learning program for your library. The Power of Small: How Rural Libraries Help Their Communities Thrive Thursday, April 18, 2019 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/power-of-small.html<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> All libraries provide vital services to their communities, but libraries that serve small, rural populations have the potential to go beyond providing information and access—they can inject the vitality that will help their communities thrive. Addressing the challenges faced by rural areas may seem daunting to a library with few staff and limited resources, but any tiny library can find more ways to support the needs of their community by thinking strategically and creating new connections with their stakeholders, patrons, and other library staff. Learn how small library director and 2018 Library Journal Mover & Shaker, Allie Stevens, applied the concept of growth mindsets to set her priorities, use resources and volunteers smartly, and avoid burnout as a solo librarian. Follow her lead to turn your library into a powerhouse for your community. The Library as Social Connector: Forging Community Connection Thursday, April 25, 2019 ♦ 3:00 pm Eastern / 12:00 pm Pacific ♦ 60 minutes Registration: https://www.webjunction.org/events/webjunction/library-as-social-connector-…<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webju…> Strong social cohesion is a crucial factor in a community’s resilience in times of stress and disruption. Unfortunately, studies show that our communities are experiencing a steady erosion of social cohesion, pointing to an increase in loneliness, depression, and separation because of too much time spent online and too little time spent in community. Libraries have the position and the power to rebuild social bonds, offering that sense of community and shared place that humans crave. Active learning programs that bring people together for participatory, shared experiences are a boost to community strength, but they could go even further to amplify social connection and build social infrastructure. Join us as we explore library programs through the lens of social possibilities and devise strategies to be more intentional about forging stronger community bonds. Idea submitted by Children's Librarian Peter Blenski [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/471b0062-f00…] One of our library assistants suggested that we have a library mascot over the summer and hide it around the library, or around town, and that we take pictures of it. Many libraries do something like this on Facebook, and it’s a great way to engage with patrons. I liked that idea, but thought of a better way to fit it into the summer reading theme of “Universe of Stories”. I asked my director to buy an inflatable astronaut suit. Inflatable suits are always hilarious, and are definitely eye-catching. It would also be something we could use it for school visits, story times, or just hanging out in the library. Every Friday, we will post a picture to our social media of the astronaut somewhere in our village. The park, a local business, some place easily recognizable. Once it’s up, patrons will have a set amount of time to get to the location. Once they are there, they have to try and find the astronaut’s backpack. A staff member will be onsite to help open the backpack once it is found, and to ensure it does not walk away. What’s inside the backpack will change every week! One week it will be a craft, one week it will be stickers, one week it will be photo booth props for selfies. We plan on putting more than enough supplies in there for everyone, so it’s not really a race. It’s more of a way to go on an outdoor scavenger hunt and engage with the library in a nontraditional format! The 2019 TVC has been streamlined to help make participating in this contest easier than ever! * Instead of state winners, there will be 5 national winners. Just have your teens submit a link to their video. * The program will accept submissions June 1-Aug 2, 2019, so that the program can be incorporated into summer programs (it’s still a great opportunity to partner with schools with video production classes or clubs; students can produce the videos as a class project and submit them in June!) * Videos will be limited to 60 seconds, making this a much more doable project for small teams. * Permission and model release forms will only be required from the winning entries (completing the forms is a requirement to receive prizes and acknowledgement). * The TVC Ad-Hoc Committee will convene a judging panel from CSLP partners and members. * Video uploads will not be limited to YouTube and Vimeo; rather, teens can upload to the social media outlet of their choice. The CSLP’s ad hoc Child and Community Well-Being committee is developing resources to support and encourage library participation in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and other initiatives to help kids and teens stay nourished, active, and healthy when school is out. These resources include the Libraries and Summer Food<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…> page on the CSLP website, manual resources and downloadables for upcoming programs, and a series of stories showcasing the experiences of libraries around the country. ________________________________ Summer Food @ the Caroline County Public Library (Maryland) by Amanda Courie, Youth Services Manager, Caroline County Public Library Read the entire story here<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…> The Caroline County Public Library, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, serves a rural county of 33,000 people with three branches. Since the summer of 2016, we have participated in the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to provide healthy food to our young community members during summer break. [https://gallery.mailchimp.com/043a7515ceb3ad45bdd2dd405/images/40c1bfc6-4c1…] Building on our existing partnership with our local school system, we were first able to offer a daily snack at our Central Library in Denton in 2016. We were then able to expand the program to provide a full lunch in 2017 and 2018. Immediately after implementing the program, we noticed benefits. Taking a break to have a nutritious snack or meal provided children and teens an opportunity to not only nourish their bodies, but to connect with library staff. We experienced a drop in the need to correct behavior issues and to send children out of the library. Our staff was able to engage young people more easily in drop-in educational and creative projects, and to build mentoring relationships which have lasted over the years. It is our firm belief that summer food programs are a model of the transformative mission of the modern public library. We are looking forward to continuing our Summer Food program at our Denton location in 2019, and in the future to expanding the program to our smaller branches. In 2018, we saw a large growth in the program due to increased local marketing efforts of the library and our partners. In our small community, we served nearly 1,000 meals over the course of the 10-week program. We encourage any interested library to consider adding this program to their summer offerings. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about implementing a summer food program at your library. Processing Paperbacks Question
by Adrianne Schinkai 29 Mar '19

29 Mar '19

Happy Friday everyone! I have a question from my clerks that maybe someone out there can help with. My library has been receiving increasing numbers of paperback books (typically mass market paperbacks) that have a glossy film over the cover that detaches from the cover proper when laminated with Demco laminate. This leaves the laminate almost like a loose sleeve over the cover. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so what actions is your library taking to deal with this problem beyond cutting the laminate off and re-laminating them? Thanks all! Have a good one! -- Adrianne M. Schinkai - (248) 331-7834 - amschinkai(a)gmail.com - e-Portfolio <https://padlet.com/amschinkai/eportfolio> ----------------------------

This weeks entry for "Women of Library History" died in Michigan
by Robert P. Holley 28 Mar '19

28 Mar '19

Camilla Leach finally truly retired in 1924, primarily due to declining health after a fall, and losing her eyesight. She moved back east and died in Jonesville, Michigan (near Battle Creek) in 1930, while staying with a relative. For the full story, follow this link: http://womenoflibraryhistory.tumblr.com/post/183517371163/camilla-leach [https://66.media.tumblr.com/avatar_5e7713ba196e_128.pnj]<http://womenoflibraryhistory.tumblr.com/post/183517371163/camilla-leach> Camilla Leach<http://womenoflibraryhistory.tumblr.com/post/183517371163/camilla-leach> womenoflibraryhistory.tumblr.com Today’s post, entitled “Camilla Leach: A sophisticated spitfire (1835-1930)”, comes from Paula Seeger, Design Library, University of Oregon, with significant contributions from Ed Teague, Retired Director of Branch Libraries, University of Oregon. All photos are courtesy of University of Oregon Libraries. Summary Ultimately known for her role as the founding librarian-manager of the Design (formerly Architecture and Allied Arts) Library at the University of Oregon, Miss Camilla Leach left a legacy of caring for student success and ambition throughout her long career. Only in the last third of her life did she find a role in the library, with the majority of her time spent in the classroom or dormitory, supervising and guiding the lives of young adults, especially girls. Miss Leach constantly updated her position during a long career trajectory, never losing her love of the arts and French culture and design. She travelled to Paris in her 30s, was committed to the plight of French orphans during WWI, and BTW, having mentioned Jonesville, whatever happened to the library vendor Book House? I know that they were most likely going out of business but never heard what happened. Many, many years ago I won a night's stay at the Jonesville B&B sponsored by this company. Bob Robert P. Question about alcohol tethers
by Scott Wright 28 Mar '19

28 Mar '19

We were approached today by a person wanting to hook their "Alcohol Scram" ankle tether up to our phone line to upload test results to their parole officer. According to the person, their parole officer said the local library would be able to assist them with this and they'd be needing to do it twice weekly for the duration of their parole. We were wondering: Is this something you've encountered / supported? Our phones are all IP based so in order to facilitate this we'd need to unhook a fax machine. -------------------------- Scott Wright Technology Librarian Dexter District Library (734)-426-4477
