"Unearth a Story" programs from the Michigan Geological Survey
by Laura Wright 03 Dec '25

03 Dec '25

This is a message from Lisa Wininger, Education and Outreach Manager for the Michigan Geological Survey, located in Kalamazoo and Houghton. She asked me to pass this information on to all of you: Michigan libraries have been contacting MGS about the 2026 summer reading "Unearth A Story." MGS is the state agency that studies and provides information about Michigan geology. Our educational outreach services are provided free of charge and we often focus on paleontology, fossils, Michigan geological history and so on. I would like to gauge library interest in working with our team this summer. Specifically, we are developing: 1. Digital resource kit ( all virtual) 2. Physical kits to borrow and then return for restock and reissue 3. MGS supporting in-person events at your location ( dependent on proximity to our locations, other events, and scale of event). If your library is interested in partnering with MGS this summer or have questions, please email me at lisa.a.wininger(a)wmich.edu<mailto:lisa.a.wininger@wmich.edu> with your contact information. Please note which of the above offerings might be of interest to you. For more information about MGS, please visit https://mgs.wmich.edu<https://mgs.wmich.edu/> or visit our YouTube channel. Reference Desk Statistics
by Amy Greschaw 02 Dec '25

02 Dec '25

Greetings Michigan Libraries, We are currently using old-fashioned pen and paper to track statistics for reference desk interactions. I've seen digital products used for this purpose in the past, but searching now, every reference I'm coming up with is from 10-12 years ago. If you have a program or platform to track your statistics digitally, what are you using? Amy Greschaw (She/Her/Hers) Head of Adult Services Belleville Area District Library 167 4th St. Belleville, MI 48111 (734) 699-3291 “The first people a dictator puts in jail are the writers, the teachers, the librarians - because these people are dangerous. They have enough vocabulary to recognize injustice and to speak out loudly about it. Let us have the courage to go on being dangerous people.” ― Madeleine L'Engle

Rural Libraries - Share a BookPage Subscription
by Anne Richards 02 Dec '25

02 Dec '25

Hello everyone, Richland Community Library is considering renewing our annual BookPage subscription (50 copies/month), and we wanted to reach out to see if any rural libraries AND RIDES participants might be interested in sharing the cost. In the past, we've noticed that we end up with 10-20 unused issues each month. Rather than letting them go to waste, we thought this could be a great opportunity for smaller libraries to receive BookPage copies at a reduced cost while helping us make the most of the subscription. Details: * Annual subscription cost: $420 for 50 monthly copies * RCL is happy to cover the upfront cost * Participating library can reimburse us for their portion by check * We can easily send your monthly copies through RIDES * If we have two other interested libraries, we could opt for the 100 copies/year subscription for $756 and split the cost three ways. This would provide even more copies for each library at an even lower per-copy cost. If your library would like to split the subscription-or if you have any questions-please feel free to reach out. We'd love to partner with you! Warmly, Anne Richards Anne Richards, MLIS Librarian - Collection Development Richland Community Library 8951 Park St. Richland, MI 49083 269-629-9085 -- This message has been scanned by E.F.A. Invitation to Attend a Sound Bath Meditation Workshop at the Pinckney Library on Wednesday, December 10th
by Hope Siasoco 01 Dec '25

01 Dec '25

Dear Library Colleagues, Note: Please excuse the cross-posting. The Pinckney Library (125 Putnam St., Pinckney, MI, 48169) cordially invites you, your family, and friends to attend an upcoming program on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 6:30pm-7:30pm entitled: "Sound Bath Meditation" with instructor, Karen Kline. Tibetan Bowls and Gongs have been used for thousands of years to assist people into deep meditative states that can be difficult to reach on their own. This will reduce your stress levels and help you to get back to that place of stillness and calm. All you have to do is just lay there and let the magic of the bowls and gongs guide you. Please bring what you need to be comfortable (a thick mat, bean bag, reclining chair, blanket, pillow, eye covering are a few suggestions) There is a limit of 30 participants and registration is required. To register: https://pinckneylibrary.org/sound-bath-meditation-registration/ For more information or help with registration, please refer to the program flier: https://pinckneylibrary.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Sound-bath-December-… or call us at 734-878-3888 or visit us at 125 Putnam St., Pinckney, MI, 48169.
