Never have our nation’s libraries played such a pivotal role in strengthening communities through education and lifelong learning. The report found that library workers are on the frontlines addressing community challenges. Many serve as first responders who take on roles outside of traditional library service that support patrons’ needs and community development. Functioning at various times as career counselor, social worker, teacher and technology instructor, library staff give special care to adopt programs and services that support our most vulnerable and curious. Additional findings illustrate library workers’ efforts to safeguard library collections and the freedom to read. In 2018 hundreds of attempts to remove materials or eliminate programs took place in public, school and academic libraries. Many of these library materials and services included or addressed LGBTQIA+ content. Traditionally the ALA releases a Top Ten List within the State of America’s Libraries Report. This year 11 books were selected, since two titles were tied for the final position on the list, and both books were burned by a religious activist to protest a Pride event. The resources are being rolled out in conjunction with the #MyLibraryMyStory initiative, a video and social media effort that aims to encourage library advocates and users to create and share videos and content about their libraries. "I have made library advocacy and community engagement my presidential priority," said ALA President Loida Garcia-Febo. "The new resources ALA has rolled out in 2019, including these two new video and social media tools, are setting a bar for librarians worldwide. It's my hope that it will inspire our advocates to flex their storytelling muscles and speak up for libraries on every platform." Digital illustrator options (Kaitlin Matesich)

Hey Kaitlin, I really love using Canva. I have an account that I use for personal purposes, but on occasion I've used it for work, too, and it is super easy to use. Projects that I've used it for include work flyers, social media posts, creating a calendar, and I've recently used it to make Storytime designs. Check it out! www.canva.com On Wed, Apr 17, 2019 at 11:58 AM <michlib-l-request(a)mcls.org> wrote: > Send Michlib-l mailing list submissions to > michlib-l(a)mcls.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://mail2.mcls.org/mailman/listinfo/michlib-l > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > michlib-l-request(a)mcls.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > michlib-l-owner(a)mcls.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Michlib-l digest..." > Today's Topics: > > 1. [Michigan eLibrary favicon Description automatically generated]Looking to take your business idea to the next level but not sure where to start? Have no fear—Gale’s DemographicsNow: Business & People has you covered. DemographicsNow, or DemoNow for short, is a highly customizable, cloud-based collection of rich business and demographic data provided by the Michigan Electronic Library (www.MeL.org<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.MeL.org…>) at no cost to all citizens, libraries, and businesses in Michigan. Those seeking business and entrepreneurial research assistance have easy access to real time demographic, purchasing, and consumer behavior reports, to name a few. DemoNow also supports existing business owners looking to expand. They can accurately identify the location of a particular demographic they wish to target, and pull insight needed to make intelligent business decisions through this suite of demographics, statistics, and census data. Here are 8 ways DemoNow transforms local businesses: 1. Customer upload and data blending — Users can obtain Census block-group demographic data, maps, and more on their actual customers. Other eye-opening data is also available for B2B businesses. 2. Advanced mapping — Customizable and printable maps show road, aerial, or base views. With advanced mapping tools, powered by Google Maps, people and business demographics can be thematically colored and more. 3. Demographic data — Easy to generate reports on any geography—or comparing multiple geographies — for information including income, housing, race, age, education, retail spending, consumer expenditures, and more via the U.S. Census, American Community Survey, and other authoritative sources. 4. Out-of-business lists —Great for scoping out potential locations with over 12 million records, so entrepreneurs can see failures of similar businesses. 5. Data visualization tool — Ability to use custom GIS files as geographies with the ability to extract household/business demographics, names and addresses, and customer segmentation data directly from the mapping tool. 6. Simmons National Consumer Study — Brings consumer targets to life with vivid and complete profiles, including lifestyles, attitudes, brand preferences and media use. The nationally representative study is the result of a comprehensive, continuously fielded survey of approximately 25,000 U.S. adults. 7. Unique Data — Users can rely on comprehensive and trusted core datasets, including Simmons National Consumer Study, American Community Survey, Experian MOSAIC consumer lifestyle segmentation data, traffic counts data, and the ability to capture demographic data by school districts. 8. Interoperability — Users can enter a geography once and it will apply throughout the product without having to be reentered. Brought to you by the MeL Team and Gale. You Are Invited to an Evening with Author Barbara J. Barton, "Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice In Michigan"
by Ann Marie Smith 17 Apr '19

17 Apr '19

An Evening with Author Barbara J. Barton, "Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice in Michigan" Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 pm at the Pickford Community Library We are honored to announce that the Pickford Community Library is hosting author Barbara J. Barton as part of the Library of Michigan 2019 Michigan Notable Book Tour. "Manoomin: The Story of Wild Rice in Michigan focuses on the history, culture, biology, and economics surrounding the wild rice plant. The story travels through time from the days before European expansion and winds its way forward in and out of the logging and industrialization eras. It weaves between the worlds of the Anishinaabek and Euro-American immigrants. Barton discusses rice beds that once existed in Michigan, why many disappeared, and the efforts to restore and protect the plant." [excerpt from Library of Michigan Press release] Barbara J. Barton is an endangered species biologist; member of the State of Michigan's wild rice working group, Michigan Water Environment Association, and western Upper Peninsula's wild rice team; and academic affiliate of the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science and the Arts Biological Station, where she collaborates on the state's wild rice map. She was awarded the 2009 MSU Extension Diversity Award for her work with the Michigan tribes on Manoomin. Her book was also awarded the Historical Society of Michigan State History Award in 2018. This event is free and open to the public; all are welcome. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Refreshments will be provided by the Enlightened Page-Turners Book Club. For more information, please contact us at amsmith(a)uproc.lib.mi.us or 906-647-1288. The Pickford Community Library is located at 230 East Main Street in downtown Pickford. We hope to see you there.
