people counters
by Maureen Derenzy 05 May '19

Hello, I'm looking for recommendations for a people counter solution. SenSource and TrafSys both provided quotes for a thermal counter. I'm trying to find a product that is more accurate that our old infrared counter and does not require a hefty annual maintenance contract. I can compile responses and post for others who may be interested. Thanks for any advice you can provide, Maureen Maureen Derenzy, Library Director Otsego County Library 700 S. Programming Coretta Scott King Book Awards To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee, the CSK Program Committee is challenging librarians, educators, and all lovers of children's literature across the nation to hold one or more programs, classes, presentations, speeches, etc., highlighting the committee, award-winning books, authors, or illustrators in each of the 50 states. You are encouraged to use these resources, programs, and activities as a base to build upon.If you accept this challenge, please email Alan Bailey<mailto:baileya@ecu.edu>, baileya(a)ecu.edu<mailto:baileya@ecu.edu>, CSK Chair Elect & Chair of the Programming Committee, and Cc: diversity(a)ala.org<mailto:diversity@ala.org> so your state will be recognized for participating in the 50-50 Initiative. Username: CSLP2019 (all caps) Password: cslp2019 (all lowercase) The avatar programming theme will also be out soon, but don't let that stop you from building out your summer reading program now, as you can add the theme later. Changes for 2019 in Wandoo Reader are detailed in this article: http://kb.demcosoftware.com/article.php?id=741<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fkb.demcoso…> Ready to Read Michigan 2020 Book Suggestions The Library of Michigan's Ready to Read Michigan program encourages reading aloud regularly to children during the early stages of life (birth up to age 5), as it ensures the development of early literacy skills and instills a love of reading. The program is designed for public librarians to model early literacy skill development directly to families and engage in outreach to early childhood centers, classrooms and daycares throughout their community. We are now accepting recommendations for the 2020 Ready to Read Michigan book program through 5pm Friday, May 10th.: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4994287/RTRM-2020-Title-Suggestions. Book suggestions should be appropriate for the 0-5 age group and be interactive, engaging read-aloud. As we have done the past 2 years of the program, the Youth Services Advisory Council<https://www.michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan/0,9327,7-381-88855_89743_90040--…> reviews title suggestions and narrows it down to a few picks that the State Librarian and Library of Michigan team then selects. CSLP: Libraries and Summer Food CSLP's Child and Community Well-Being Committee (CCWB) has created two resources to support and facilitate public library participation in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and other ways to help connect kids and teens with healthy food when school is out. One is an online Libraries and Summer Food how-to guide now available on the CSLP website. The other is a two-sided Summer Meals factsheet for libraries, featuring key statistics about child hunger and SFSP, brief talking points for library involvement, and a brief step-by-step guide to determining SFSP eligibility and getting started. Thanks to the CCWB committee<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpr…>, which includes Janet Dwyer, Rebecca Antill, Chris Farrar, Lisa Hechesky, Danielle Margarida, April Mazza, Sharon Rawlins, and Carrie Sanders. The Libraries and Summer Food how-to guide link and description are below. The factsheet is attached, and as the factsheet notes, only a small fraction of children and teens who receive free school meals also participate in summer meal programs. There is so much unrealized potential, and so many kids needlessly going without in the summer. *Libraries and Summer Food: www.cslpreads.org/libraries-and-summer-food<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cslpre…> A how-to guide to help libraries connect kids and teens with healthy food when school is out. The guide begins with an overview of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), a federally funded, state-administered program. Next is a checklist for libraries to determine their eligibility and take the first steps toward becoming an SFSP site. For libraries not in geographic areas that are eligible for SFSP, or for whom SFSP is not a good fit, there's a section on alternatives to SFSP and other ways to help. This section is also for those who don't plan to serve food at the library, but still want to support summer feeding. Next is a collection of tips, checklists, best practices, and innovative ideas to plan for a successful summer, from space considerations, to programming, to staffing, and more, including basic talking points and additional advocacy and awareness materials to build support. Finally, a resource list gathers links to essential and supplemental sources to help librarians connect children and teens in their communities to healthy food throughout the summer. Teen Video Challenge Do the teens in your library like to make videos? Encourage them to participate in the Collaborative Summer Library Program 2019 Teen Video Challenge this summer! This year's Teen Video Challenge will be a NATIONAL contest and five winners will be chosen to receive a $200 cash prize plus $50 worth of summer reading materials for their library. *New* this year the challenge will run through the summer, so you can hold video making programs in June and July. Videos can be submitted June 1-August 2, 2019. These 60 second-or-less videos should be their interpretation of the 2019 slogan "A Universe of Stories." For more information, including complete contest rules, visit this page of the CSLP website: https://www.cslpreads.org/programs/teen-program/2019-teen-video-challenge/. Apply for the Digital Equipment Grant Have you applied<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fala.us1.l…> for YALSA's new digital equipment grant<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fala.us1.l…>? Funded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, ten libraries in need will be awarded $1,000 to purchase digital equipment to help engage teen patrons. Apply<https://gcc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fala.us1.l…> now through May 15. Applicants must be YALSA members and located within 20 miles of a Dollar General store. Save the Date: 2020's "Imagine Your Story" and Virtual Reality Workshop! Nationally known storyteller Will Stuck will present on the 2020 Collaborative Summer Library Program's "Imagine Your Story." From passive programming to decorating to age-specific ideas, Stuck will help refresh your summer reading programs. Later in the day we will take the theme a step further and dive into the world of Virtual Reality with Kevin McDonough, Reference Librarian at Northern Michigan University, learning about different VR equipment, experiencing a virtual reality for yourself, and resources to support programming in your library with VR. Registration will open later this summer, but for now save the following dates on your 2019 Fall calendars: Monday, November 18 (Bloomfield Township Public Library, Bloomfield Twp), Tuesday, November 19 (Portage District Library, Portage), and Thursday, November 21 (Otsego County Library, Gaylord). In the News: PBS Books Launches A National Library Engagement Program<http://www.pbs.org/book-view-now/blogs/news/2019/03/27/pbs-books-launches-a…> - Survey results "The results are clear; libraries are eager to take advantage of PBS Books programs and trust PBS Books as a partner. According to the survey, 92% of libraries have a social media presence, and a majority said they were interested in having access to quality social media content to share and utilizing an archive of more than 650 high quality digital PBS Books videos. The survey also showed that 70% of libraries participated in activities related to The Great American Read, a series that aired on PBS in 2018 and promoted viewer participation. This indicates libraries' interest in utilizing PBS content about books to spark community engagement. Most libraries reported that they would be interested in programs that allowed them to screen PBS shows, to provide digital access to author interviews and other literary content, and to highlight significant things happening at libraries."
