Do you know of a child or young adult who loves history?
by HSM Main 25 Oct '19

25 Oct '19

Do you know of a child or young adult who loves history? It's not too late for students to participate in Michigan History DayR for the 2019-2020 season. Michigan History Day, or National History Day in Michigan, is an educational program sponsored by the Historical Society of Michigan. The program is designed to encourage students in grades 4-12 to explore historical subjects using project-based learning. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtwHAA2_y7U> Watch our Michigan History Day video to learn more! This free program is very flexible and can be done school-wide, through after-school clubs, or even with individual students. It's open to students in private and public schools, as well as students who are homeschooled. Participants can be "coached" by teachers, librarians, family members, or community members. Over the course of several months, students research an individually chosen topic that connects with an annual theme. The 2020 theme of Breaking Barriers in History provides students with an opportunity to select a variety of topics from local, state, national, or world history. Each student becomes a historian, considering his or her topic from many angles and arguing a point of view. They present their research by creating an exhibit, documentary, website, performance, or paper. With the exception of the paper category, students can work on entries in teams of up to five students or as individuals. Michigan History Day aligns with many Content Expectations for Social Studies and Language Arts and addresses the C3 Framework for Social Studies content. <http://hsmichigan.org/mhd/> Learn more about Michigan History Day! Michigan History Day student receives first-place award at National History Day finals For the first time in several years, a Michigan student won a first-place award at the National History Day finals in College Park, Maryland, in June of this year. [Employment Opportunities] Circulation Clerical Assistant AND Youth Services Clerical Assistant
by BTPL Careers 25 Oct '19

25 Oct '19

Howdy, All-- Opportunities are always opening up to work at our wonderful Library. Today, I have two positions opening that may *seem* similar, but are quite different. Reading is important! One is the CIRCULATION Clerical Assistant, where our lucky future staff member gets to assist with helping patrons get library cards, checking out books, and whatever else might come around, because, you know. It's circulation. Don't take my word for it, read all about it here: https://btpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2019.10_Circulation-Clerical-As… The other is the YOUTH SERVICES Clerical Assistant, where the fortunate staff member-to-be gets to assist with crafts, displays, children, and other wonderful things. You should check it out yourself, here: https://btpl.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2019.10_YS-Clerical-Assistant.p… Both jobs pay actual money, not just karma points: $14.40 – 19.03 per hour with increase possible upon completion of three-month orientation. Stay tuned! I will be posting even more great jobs next week. Because no one takes me seriously when I tell them they can never leave. Best Regards, Linden Godlove Administrative Assistant Bloomfield Township Public Library

Request from Secretary of State regarding redistricting commission
by Simlar, Cathleen (MDOS) 25 Oct '19

25 Oct '19

Hello. The Secretary of State's Office is once again requesting the assistance of libraries to help raise public awareness. Today's request is about the opportunity for Michiganders to serve on the first-ever Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. We hope you will share the following newsletter/website message and social media messages through your own communication channels. I've also attached a flyer that we're hoping you will consider posting inside your building. NOTE: Some residents may need to use library computers when applying to serve on the commission and we are so grateful libraries offer this community service. Should anyone approach your staff with questions about the commission, please direct them to RedistrictingMichigan.org<http://www.redistrictingmichigan.org/> where we have provided a wealth of information about what it means to be a commissioner. As always, thank you so much for helping us raise public awareness. Newsletter/website message Apply now to make our elections fair Now through June 1, 2020, you can apply<http://www.redistrictingmichigan.org> to serve as one of 13 commissioners on the first-ever Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. Last November, Michigan voters decisively supported the "Voters Not Politicians" constitutional amendment that makes a commission of 13 randomly-selected citizens - not elected politicians, consultants or lobbyists - responsible for drawing fair and representative district lines for the Michigan Senate, Michigan House of Representatives and U.S. Congress. The commission is a historic opportunity for Michigan voters to draw electoral maps and give us more impartial elections. All eligible Michigan citizens are encouraged to apply to serve on the commission, which does not require any special skills or expertise. The constitution simply requires that each commissioner performs his or her duties impartially and with integrity. The application takes about 15 minutes to complete, and commissioners will be compensated about $40,000 for their service. Commissioners will be randomly selected from the pool of eligible applicants in the summer of 2020 and will gather input from the public as well as census data to determine electoral district maps which will take effect for the 2022 elections.
