MLA Equity Fund Grants
by Debbie Mikula 26 Jun '20

26 Jun '20

Over the years, many contributions have been made to MLA – most with specific use attached. As we looked for ways to recognize the needs of underrepresented individuals within the library community, the MLA board approved a change to a fund that didn’t have any restrictions or ties. With the dollars already within the fund, and a commitment to fundraise each year to keep it a healthy resource, we proudly unveil the MLA Equity Fund Grants. MLA affirms its commitment to diversity and inclusion by supporting the broadest participation of racially and ethnically diverse librarians and library support staff who provide leadership in the transformation of libraries and library services. The new MLA Equity Fund will be used as an individual grant geared toward the professional development of individuals currently underrepresented in the library profession. This fund will reduce financial barriers and uplift the professional development for Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, North African, and Middle Eastern individuals by providing resources to be used for memberships, attendance at workshops, educational events or conferences of applicants’ choosing, or for other purposes that they believe increase their ability to impact and transform the library profession. Download the MLA Equity Fund Guidelines for complete details<https://www.milibraries.org/assets/docs/MLA%20Equity%20Fund%20Guidelines-FI…>. Applications should be submitted using the online form: https://www.milibraries.org/equity-fund-application All application materials are due to MLA by Friday, July 31, 2020, by 5:00 pm.

Summer Library Programming Reading logs are now available for you to download, edit in your library information/reading recommendations, print & share with patrons: https://bit.ly/LMlogs2020. Also, don't forget the updated posters, including some social media poster images, are available separately from the rest of the manual art at: http://bit.ly/LM2020CSLP. I know you're in the middle of launching #ImagineYourStory but I need you take a couple of minutes to answer the following questions at: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5669405/CSLP20 by 5:00 PM, Monday, July 6th: 1. CSLP's 2022 theme is "Oceanography" and the artist is Sophie Blackall. What slogan suggestions do you have for this theme? For Example: "Dive Into Reading" or "Splash Around with a Good Book." (Since we are the Great Lakes state, any slogan around water might do.) 2. CSLP plans summer library programs far out in order to book artists and begin drafting manuals. Please share 1 theme suggestion (not a slogan) for the summer of 2024. For example: Art, Music, or Space. Please don't email me, but respond at: https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/5669405/CSLP20. To review past slogans/themes, go to: https://www.cslpreads.org/programs/years-of-cslp-themes/. Your input informs my submissions to the Collaborative Summer Library Program. All public libraries in Michigan are members of CSLP and have input and access to their materials, thanks to support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. I remember Josh from Ploud website training. He was wicked smart with customizing the software and asked great questions during the workshop. "I'm doing X, and I'd like it to do Y also," he'd say. I look at his computer screen and think, "I did not even know that was possible." He will be missed. SRLC Presents: Binding Glue: Trauma, Resilience, and the Small Town Library -Patrick Lloyd
by Atkin, Evette (MDE) 26 Jun '20

26 Jun '20

Greetings! The Library of Michigan (LM) is excited to announce a new continuing education opportunity. LM's new webinar series, SRLC Presents brings to you select sessions from the cancelled 2020 Loleta Fyan Small & Rural Libraries Conference. Join us Tuesday, July 14 at 2:00 PM for "Binding Glue: Trauma, Resilience, and the Small Town Library," presented by Patrick Lloyd. Tuesday, July 14 @ 2:00 ET SRLC Presents: Binding Glue: Trauma, Resilience, and the Small Town Library -Patrick Lloyd<https://libraryofmichigan.z2systems.com/event.jsp?event=311&> Cost: Free Increasingly, the answers to our patrons' questions seem to lie outside the walls of our libraries rather than within them. As more and more folks approach our desks with questions regarding basic needs assistance and other social problems, we must begin to consider our work in ways beyond books and typical customer service. We know that libraries can change lives. In smaller communities, libraries can also save lives. This session will highlight the difficulties facing many patrons, how the public library serves to protect them, and ways our institutions can strengthen the resiliency of individuals and communities. Instructor: Patrick Lloyd, LMSW is the first library social worker in Texas and the only helping professional on City of Georgetown staff. Working within a suburban community, Patrick's work is holistic in nature and includes assessment and referral of patrons with diverse needs, identification of local resource gaps, advocating for expansion of social service capacity within the city, and serving as a liaison between city staff and local nonprofit agencies. He is a member of the PLA Social Work Task Force, created in the fall of 2018. Patrick has presented at ALA, PLA, and Texas Library Association Conferences and at state library-sponsored functions across the country. This project is made possible by grant funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) administered by the State of Michigan through the Library of Michigan. Evette M. CARES Act Grants - What Is Digital Inclusion and Issues with CIPA webinar
by Reish, Karren (MDE) 25 Jun '20

25 Jun '20

We covered the CARES Act focus on digital inclusion and CIPA today in a brief Q & A webinar. The recording link and topical document links are below and the recording will be posted to the CARES Act web site soon. The focus on digital inclusion comes from the CARES Act legislation, specifically the language that the purpose of the act is “To expand digital network access, purchase internet accessible devices, and provide technical support services.“ As this is federal funding for internet access, the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) does apply, but only to grant funded devices. * For suggested ideas on digital inclusion purchases – see CARES Act Grant Program Application Information <https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/lm_2020_LSTA_Cares_act…> , page 4. * For more detail on CIPA and digital inclusion – see CIPA & CARES Act Fact Sheet - Filtering Hotspots and Mobile Devices<https://www.michigan.gov/documents/libraryofmichigan/lm_LSTA_2020_CARES_Act…>. * For the link to the Q & A recording from today – see CARES Act Grants - What Is Digital Inclusion and Issues with CIPA<https://michigan-host.zoom.us/rec/share/wclWPqvaymhIRZXDyl7WHZERDNjceaa8g3A…> - Password: 7y$C+b.I If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Reminder: New Opportunities in Adult Programming - DIGITAL INCLUSION, June 25 @ 2pm ET
by Shannon White - Library of Michigan 25 Jun '20

25 Jun '20

We hope you can join us tomorrow as we discuss digital inclusion with Connect Michigan. Details to login to the meeting are below. The New Opportunities in Adult Programming virtual meeting will return on Thursday, June 25 at 2:00 pm Eastern. Next week our topic will be digital inclusion. LM currently has CARES Act grants funding available for digital inclusion efforts. Let's learn more about what digital inclusion is and why it is important for libraries to be part of the effort to increase digital inclusion in our communities. We will be joined by Eric Frederick, Executive Director for Connected Nation Michigan. Eric will provide us a national and statewide view of where our communities stand now with access to broadband, what digital inclusion is, and how we can all engage in efforts to increase access to it across Michigan. The pandemic has really highlighted the need for more work in this area to ensure everyone has access to a vital and basic requirement for 21st century life. We hope this session will give you some ideas for your own CARES Act digital inclusion grant application that is due on July 6 at 5pm ET as well. To review the notes and find the recording link to all our New Opportunities in Adult Programming virtual meetings visit our Google folder here: https://bit.ly/lm-adult (includes chat logs) You can add your own questions and tips to this as well to share with your colleagues.
