Program Recommendation
by Arleen Wood 19 Nov '20

19 Nov '20

Last week we had an interesting program on Rosie the Riveter presented by Baily Sisoy Isgro, owner of Detroit History Tours. She wrote an award winning children's book on the topic and gave a wonderful program for our adult audience. The program began with how the idea of Rosie the Riveter got started then moved to the variety of roles taken on by "Rosies", particularly in the Detroit area, as men joined the military. Just a few of the topics discussed were the symbolism in the Norman Rockwell painting [and Saturday Evening Post cover], the Rosie the Riveter song by Kay Kyser, and Willow Run. by Norris, Sonya (MDE) 19 Nov '20

19 Nov '20

[white M on a tri-colored background]Coming in 2021, we're launching a new MeL Expert Badge! We've fully embraced "just-in-time, what's in it for me" microlearning modules for adults. We're delivering knowledge of how to use the eResources in everyday language, with real-life examples. We'll be showcasing the top MeL eResources in ways that allow Michigan staff to take away concrete knowledge of how to use MeL. Learners will be able to dip in and out of these modules as they like, take them in any order, at their own pace, and when they complete the series they will earn a badge. This is where you come in. What should we call the badge? The winner will receive a $25 gift card. Please submit your idea to MeL staff<https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/6009724/MeL-Badge-Competition>! #IMLSGrant Sonya Schryer Norris Library Consultant Library of Michigan Michigan Department of Education 517-335-1498 https://michigan.gov/libraryofmichigan https://mel.org<https://mel.org/> http://michlibrary.org<http://michlibrary.org/> [cid:image003.png@01D6BE80.9D7218C0]

Open Source ILS That Runs Windows?
by Steven Assarian 19 Nov '20

19 Nov '20

Hello Everyone, I have a community in Detroit that's trying to implement an open ILS system. However, the person working with it isn't terribly experienced in Linux, so he was wondering if there was an open-source ILS that used a Windows server. I didn't know of one that did, but I thought I would see if anyone in the state knew of one, and could recommend one. Thanks for your time, Steve Steven Assarian he/him/his (https://www.mypronouns.org/) Business and Career Librarian Grand Rapids Public Library Main Library | 111 Library St NE | 49503 616-988-5486 (tel:16169885486) | www.grpl.org (https://www.grpl.org)

[cid:b264cbaa-fbab-483d-9c3b-8f712d31c79f] East Lansing Public Library Announces Temporary Closure to the Public Modified Services and Increased Safety Procedures Implemented East Lansing, MI – The East Lansing Public Library will temporarily close to the public and modify services in response to the community-wide spread of COVID-19 and new Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Emergency Order. The plan is to follow the guidelines of the City of East Lansing, Ingham County Health Department, the State of Michigan and the CDC. We will continue to listen to science and healthcare providers and adjust as needed. “Out of an abundance of care for our patrons, staff and community members, the East Lansing Public Library is reverting back to curbside pickup services and closing our building to the public. This decision was not made lightly. The staff and I have truly enjoyed seeing many of our patrons back in the library over the past month,” stated Kristin Shelley, Library Director. “It is my hope that by complying with the guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, we will safely welcome the community back into the library soon.” Beginning on November 20, 2020, the library will roll-back services to Phase 3 and close the building to the public. Curbside Pickup Service will continue with a new schedule of Monday – Thursday from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm and Saturdays from 1:00 – 5:00 pm.
